I think I like it more than Riskys Revenge. But I would never have played it if it weren't for Riskys.

Bought a flashcart just to play it on real hardware.

It's a fine game, but when you are first starting out, and you don't have many hearts or any of the warp squid huts available to you, travelling between towns can be long an arduous.

Most of the leaps of faith are only there if you're in a hurry. You can climb down slowly and avoid leap-of-faithing over the water in the area to the right of starting city for instance. I usually just leap-of-faith right over that shit though, because I'm in a hurry and know the map roughly anyway.

I've only played the original and Risky's Revenge, but I think what people perceive as "roughness" of the original was also partially a strength that was lost in the sequel(s). The first game wasn't difficult by any means, but it did feel like an proud accomplishment when you learned how to safely navigate an overworld area or defeat certain groups of enemies safely.

It's different. Slower paced but still fun nonetheless. Great music and graphics, tight and precise controls, arguably some of the best on Game Boy. Comparatively I'd say the two latter games play more fair. As someone said the over world is very unforgiving early in the game and can turn off a lot of gamers but the game only gets better. If you liked Risky's Revenge or Pirates Curse if recommend it strongly.
