HM64 was very unusual in that it had a lot of dark and sad themes in the greater story, at least for me as a kid. In hindsight it kind of has an Ozu feel.

By the time you arrive in your Grandfather's old village and inherit his farm the region is pretty much declining and everyone knows it. Even the Harvest Goddess has been forsaken, the villagers worshipping at the foreign church instead of paying homage to the traditional spirit of the village. Even the winter theme is depressing.

It's an incredible atmosphere and aesthetic for a game to have- a very raw, honest, and relatable social portrait that just about everyone can identify with in one fashion or another. It was this subtle undercurrent of grounded reality and tragedy that made the game so quietly profound. It really encapsulated the poetic side of the rural experience.

Majora's Mask was filled with subtle "Oh fuck" moments only half-hidden by the translation or original script.

In retrospect it's a heavy game though you don't expect so going in- you hear "the moon is falling" like a concept, and then the game actually takes the time to explore the kind of anxiety and regrets people feel in that kind of situation. The entire side-quest system is based around Link helping people resolve their personal baggage before the end .... but everything you do is just reverted as part of the time loop anyway (well, it counts towards the ending, but still).

The level of detail and thought in its execution s incredible.
