2187970 No.2187970 [Reply] [Original]

Since these platforms share plenty of titles, I think we should have a comparison thread. Which is your favorite console and why? I suppose the Playstation could be my favorite, but I've had the Saturn and 64 as well and really loved them. The 3DO and Jaguar are behind the others tech-wise, they belong to the failed in-between group along with the Sega 32X, but I'll include them since they share some games with the other consoles.

>> No.2187979

>>2187970
I might as well include the 32X as well since it had Doom.

>> No.2187986

playstation has the most breadth and has the most well-rounded library by far.
saturn is the best if you want 2D (especially fighters and shmups)
N64 is the best if you want 3D platformers/console shooters/nintendo games.

>> No.2187993

The jaguar is such an enigma. I have to wonder what it would've been capable of had it not died so early.

Don't forget, N64 is the best for multiplayer

>> No.2188001

PS1 is you want to play fucking everything.
Saturn if you want great arcade games, great Sega exclusives and good RPGs if you can into moonrunes.
N64 if you want some fine 1st/2nd party games game and some 3rd party gems like Bomberman 64 or Mischief Makers, aside from that it's kinda limited.

The others consoles are irrelevant.

I will add that the 3DO is the best for PC ports. There is no real reason to get the Jag except it comes in the greatest box a console ever had.

Good point, but N64 has a pretty big flaw in terms of multiplayer in that the system has very few fighting games, so I got to give saturn a mention when it comes to multiplayer too.

I bet they thought Gex would be the 3DO's platform hero. The Playstation and Nintendo stole all of them. The only thing better would be if Nintendo went under and Mario 64 was re-released on PSX, or if Sony died and Crash Bandicoot was ported to the N64. Sonic Xtreme on the PS1 would have been hilarious.

The Atari version was supposed to be the original. It got delayed and the PSX version came out before it. The Band Land part sucked because the sliding down the ramps didn't work, which takes most of the fun out of the level.

I had no idea Gex and Rayman were rivals. They were both originally designed for consoles that later failed, were 2D platformers on systems designed for 3D, were successful on Saturn and Playstation, and both successfully transitioned to 3D later that generation.

>Playstation
Polygon jitter up the wazoo, also on the lower end of processing power of the generation. Biggest library of the 90s though, meaning pretty much everyone can find something to suit his tastes. This is the platform you want if you mostly care about the number and variety of games. The unit itself has been made entirely obsolete by the PS2's backwards compatibility and softmodding capabilities.
>Saturn
Probably the most solid and underrated of the bunch. Decent power, decent library, a lot of hit or miss games though. The platform to buy if you want both power and some great games, and of course a must have for Sega fans and arcade fans due to being the first Sega platform with enough power to handle faithful arcade ports.
>Nintendo 64
Great processing power held back by cartridge restrictions that (alongside weird texture RAM limitations and the CPU integrated audio processing) hinder the audiovisual presentation first and foremost, but also content. Muddy textures, low details, repetitive music and massively crippled voice acting or cutscenes. Almost timeless core library of very few dozen titles, outside of it not much worth mentioning, games were also criminally expensive at the time. Obviously the platform to play first party Nintendo games on, alongside a few other gems, but it's not something you absolutely must have on your shelf in my eyes.
>Jaguar
A failure on almost all fronts. Decent enough specs paired with almost zero third party support, a miniscule library, and the most catastrophic first party controller to ever disgrace video games, also tried to pull a Sega CD years after Sega themselves weren't all that successful (it only ended up on every tenth Mega Drive). I have no clue who would want this, but be my guest if you do. Who knows, maybe for sheer novelty or collector's value.
>3DO
I know almost nothing about this system, apart from it being the first and weakest of the fifth gen and having had the highest price. Please educate me.

Haha I actually sold my PS2 just to buy a PS1 and buy more games, since PS1 consoles are so cheap nowadays. The 3DO is crap, it cost $700 at release as I'm sure you already know, and I can only remember two games that were notable - Need for Speed and Gex, both have been ported to the Playstation, Saturn, and PC anyway, so there is little reason to buy a 3DO. The N64 was fairly powerful but the cartridges crippled it. That did give the N64 the benefit of having a virtually indestructible console and equally durable cartridges (but the connectors go bad as always). The Playstation had a greatly extended lifespan thanks to the PSone. The LCD screen was an awesome addon, and Sony abolished the licensing fees in 2000. That created a huge supply of 10 dollar budget games (a few of them actually weren't shit) and it became a great console for kids. Sony was VERY good at keeping their old consoles going. The PS2 was in production until 2014. The Saturn was very competitive in the early years but the PS1 had a longer lifespan and greater sales than the Saturn and Dreamcast combined.

I agree that the PS1 might be worth buying for some people. Keep in mind though that the PS1 does not emulate PS1 games, it actually has the same processor used in the PS1 as a secondary chip. This is similar to how the Genesis achieved Master System compatibility by including a Zilog Z80. The PS2 also filters the textures in PS1 games, but that's not for everyone. Let's try to compile a list of PS1/N64/Saturn/Jaguar/3DO/32X cross-platform titles.

Doom:
>3DO, Jaguar, 32X, Playstation and Saturn ports are enhanced, Doom 64 is a remake rather than a port of Doom.
Quake:
>N64, Saturn (Saturn version actually runs on Slavedriver engine used for Powerslave/Exhumed)
Duke Nukem 3D:
>PSX, N64, Saturn
Rayman:
>Jaguar (missing certain physics and includes a Breakout minigame), Playstation, Saturn
Worms:
>Jaguar, Saturn, Playstation, also ported to Mega Drive/SNES in Europe.
Worms Armageddon:
>PSX, N64 (also on Dreamcast)
Battle Arena Toshinden:
>PSX, Saturn
Gex:
>3DO, Saturn, PSX
Gex 2: Deep Cover Gecko:
>PSX, N64 (but with some major differences)
The Need for Speed:
>3DO, PSX, Saturn
Powerslave/Exhumed
>PSX, Saturn (PC version was a Build engine game)
Sim City 2000:
>PSX, Saturn, N64 (lots of other platforms as well)
Battle Stations:
>PSX, Saturn
Die Hard Trilogy:
>PSX, Saturn
There's like a bazillion more but here's a few shared titles.

>> No.2191121

I don't think N64 had a lot of games in common in the Saturn and PS1.

>> No.2191131

PSX for dozens of titles I really like, followed by Saturn with that (some are poor done but they turn me on) arcade ports and great original games like Panzer Dragoon or Nights. N64 is pretty needless IMO.

Saturn was the least solid actually. Overly complex architecture, and its only saving grace was a 2d background processor and SLIGHTLY more memory. Everything else, it did worse than the Playstation (the Playstation was even better at sprite pushing, it just didn't have enough RAM and any way to do background special effects).

Yeah, Saturn had the RAM cart as well, but that didn't make things easier as it only had 512kbyte video memory for sprites. It had to copy new sprites in from the RAM cart, and while it did that, it couldn't actually draw anything. It's why many of the RAM cart titles had insane amounts of slowdown (Marvel Super Heroes, Metal Slug, etc).

I don't want to make a new thread, so fuck it, I'll just ask it here

I recently bought a Playstation 1, PAL, for the first time in my life, since I wanted one so much as a kid. And while the machine was cheap, everywhere I look, the games are obscenely priced. If it sold when then it's expensive due to being popular, if it sold bad it's expensive because it's rare.
I don't care if it is sealed or used, I just want the original disc in an original console. Small local stores have more reasonable prices, but much limited supply.Games like Valkyrie Profile or Castlevania Chronicles is only on ebay, and they bleed you dry for them.

Is there a site that sells them at reasonable prices internationally, even if the quality is less than decent?

Oh, and one more thing. Do boot discs actually work, and should I bother with them? I really don't want to chip my console, would leave a bad taste in my mouth - but region locking limits me too much

Welcome to collecting retro vidya. Price is expensive because there are a lot of people like you who are now grown ups, with money disposal and want to buy all the vidya they dreamed of as kids. Couple the nostalgia effect with the collector behavior becoming more popular due to internet and people being able to share their things and receive feedback easily, and you've got a pretty bad scenario if you're looking for good deals. Let's say you came in a little 10 years too late. Always the best time to collect or buy videogames is right when a generation ends. For example right now is the time to collect 7th gen games, PS2/Gamecube games are already starting to increase demand because people who were kids in the early 00s are now starting to do part time jobs and get money to spend on nostalgic shit.
PS3/360 games are just "old games" for everyone now, so they're cheap. The same happened to PS1, SNES, NES, Atari. There was a time when SNES games were sold for dirt cheap because they were "just old games", around the time of PS1 or starting of PS2 era.

Gex was scratched like a MOTHER FUCKER (basically looks like it was dragged on a sidewalk) It refused to boot, but a little toothpaste fixed it. If it starts fucking up again, it's getting returned. Also, the PSX port of Doom is fun, but not as good as I thought it was. The framerate is really bad in some spots and I wonder if the colored lighting has to do with it.

You have a couple of options depending on which model you have. If you have a parallel port you can buy a game shark-like device to bypass region locks and play "game backups".
Secondly you can install a modchip, this is what was done to my PSX back in 1998 and hasn't failed me till this day.
Finally there is something known as the disc swap trick. I don't know the specifics, but basically you boot up an official game till the second logo and swap out the disk. Just look it up on YouTube if you want an demonstration of it.

Happy playing!

If you want to buy weeaboo games you have to pay the weeaboo tax. Combine that with the RPG tax, and the nostalgia tax.
