2184123 No.2184123 [Reply] [Original]

Tried making this on /v/ but naturally it died fast cause of the board speed.
I'm currently playing through this game for the first time and I'm having fun with it but I'm somewhat conflicted with the job system.

Would I really need to grind and max ALL the jobs?

I mean like some silly combinations of abilities and all but I'm finding myself maxing some classes that I like and switching over to something I like less just so I can level that too.

Also Faris is the best girl y'arrr

>> No.2184127

>>2184123
No, the game does reward you at the end for mastering more classes, but at the same time you can beat it by literally playing 1 class only the entire game.

I think the best option is 2 fighters (usually bartz and galuf) and 2 support (faris and lenna) although I feel like Galuf and Faris can be switched around.

The only reason to min/max and get as many jobs as possible is so you can go into the final stretch as the "bare" class, which gives you stat bonuses for mastering jobs, for instance, if you master berserker you get a very large strength bonus while in Bare class, while being able to equip any equipment and freely choose your abilities.

I think I beat the game mastering Monk, Knight, Mystic Knight, Ninja and Berserker, with my mages being Blue, White, Red, and Summoner.

FF5 is probably one of the harder ones honestly, but just use some strategy and thought and save often and you should be fine.

It's better to switch classes once you get mastery, if only to have more options for setting up your characters

having ultimate bare class characters is nice, but also time consuming and not necessary

I used Bartz and Faris as physicals, Reina as a mage, and Galuf as sort of a mixed combat/support mage (monk with support magic or buffing/healing mage that punches things)

by the end of the game Sword Magic gets very powerful and I believe it pairs up with some abilities that multiply your normal attacks, but so does Jump, which gets a sizable damage bonus from doing it with spears, so I ended up having Bartz as a sword mage and Faris as a dragoon

I don't know how far along you are, but I recommend at least getting Barefist from the Monk class for everyone. It gives mages a viable attack option outside of magic, and it also gives the class in question equal Strength to the Monk class, so it can still affect weapons' damage output, as well.

>Would I really need to grind and max ALL the jobs?
Absolutely not. That takes ages, and there's really no point to it. Unless you're a completionist / enjoy overkill.

Bare/Freelancer gets stat bonuses for jobs the character has mastered, but that's it. Mastering every single job is not necessary, in fact you can solo the game with one character that never switches a job (I've done that with most classes).

Also fun little known fact is that all the characters have different stats. Bartz has the best Strength and high Stamina making him suitable for the punchy jobs, Reina has the highest Magic, Galuf has the highest Stamina/HP and Faris has the best all-round stats (both physical and magical) to represent her gender-conflicted nature, also because she is the best girl. This doesn't matter for most of the game, but it does make the characters slightly better at different tasks in the beginning.

The simplest recommendation is to max Red Mage for Dualcast, Hunter for X-Fight/Rapid Attack, and Mystic Knight for Flare or Holy sword. Samurai if you feel like breaking the game with Gil Toss. Almost every class is useful in its own way except Berserker and Geomancer though, so you can't go wrong with just mastering whatever you like and what suits your playstyle, even Bard and Chemist can be ridiculously powerful assets if you know how to use them.

It's not like stat differences between characters matter that much. It's like 2-3 points, so it hardly matters except you want to go full optimization in the very very early game.

Also game sprite Faris >>> Amano Faris. It doesn't help that most of Amano Faris fanart is tumblr drawing her as an ugly manface tranny. Even though she's beautiful enough to make Bartz and Galuf fall for her despite not even knowing she's a woman.

>> No.2184435

There's a few problems with the game in that certain jobs are kind of useless, or only useful for small parts of the game.

-Monk is only good for the early game (but in SNES you'd need to use it into lategame to master for its Str).
-Berserker is only good for the period of the game before special attack commands would get learned.
-Dancer is never useful, even with the items that increase the chances of Sword Dance (they all only increase it to 50% because they replace Tempting Tango with another Sword Dance, so they don't stack).
-Beastmaster is ONLY used for obtaining Blue spells
-Geomancer is great for a short period of time when its mid-power mt magic attacks FOR FREE are still strong, then afterward it was a waste of ABP.
-Oracle teaches ABP Up and has highest magic but is DOGSHIT at actually doing things

Anyway with those out of the way, everything else can prove to be fun and useful in its own way. There are certain abilities a physical or magical character pretty much must acquire at least one of to remain relevant lategame (more than one and you get crazy powerful obviously), but there are a fair number of each

PHYSICAL characters should get at least one of:
>!Rapid-Fire (Ranger)
>!Spellblade 6 (Mystic Knight)
>Dual Wield (Ninja)
>!Zeninage (Samurai)
>!Finisher (Gladiator, chances improve with level so Gladiator 4)

MAGICAL characters should get at least one of:
>!Dualcast (Red Mage)
>!Time 6 (Time Mage - QUICK IS BEST SPELL)
>!Blue (Blue Mage - with White Wind, Mighty Guard, Transfusion and some attacks learned)
>!Summon 5 (Golem, Carbuncle, Bahamut, Pheonix+Transfusion for infinite mana, etc, way more toys than !Black)

But it's not a problem if you wound up with a maxed Beastmaster+Geomancy character. The following don't need SHIT from other jobs to do their unique gimmicks:
-Mime
-Chemist
-Knight
-Bard
-Canoneer

Dragoons are for all-Dragoon pocket strats against tricky enemies, and Necromancer basically doesn't exist for all intents and purposes.

>-Dancer is never useful,
iirc you can master it fairly quickly and when mastered it gives you the Equip Ribbon ability. Also I think this class gives you the biggest magic power (not sure).

>-Beastmaster is ONLY used for obtaining Blue spells
Controlling monsters allows you to beat some otherwise overpowered monsters. Two from the top of my head is Gorchimera and Shild Dragon, the latter being extremely useful for grinding very early on, as it gives HUGE amounts of exp.

>-Geomancer is great for a short period of time
Honestly this is the one class I never found any pros for, other than immunity from lava in that one dungeon.

Personally, I use thief, monk, knight, and one mage most of the time. Sometimes change the monk out to a mage. I always have at least one blue mage, or at least one character set up with the blue mages learning skill, so I can get those spells.

Red mages take insanely long to level up, but give you Dualcast. They are the best mages to use in World 1 because they can cast any spell that you can buy up there, it's World 2 where they get a bunch of stronger stuff that they cannot use (and even then you can just level up a black/white mage and give their casting ability while still using a red mage).

But the thing with FFV is that you have shit loads of tactics for any given enemy. You can complete the game using the most unlikely classes. I think the only limitation is that if you don't mix magic + physical jobs, then some enemies will be way too difficult to beat. Like those gargoyles where you have to kill both of them in one attack or else they regenerate. Good luck killing those with physical-only jobs, unless you already have X-fight (which is not impossible but a bit unlikely).

>-Monk is only good for the early game (but in SNES you'd need to use it into lategame to master for its Str).
OHKOs everything for the first fourth of the game, then Counter is a good use of a skill on any physical job. Yeah, it's mostly an early-game job, but it's a great one. Also there's a Kaiser Claw accessory that makes barehanded attacks deal more damage later on.

>Dancer
Like Hunter or Red Mage it's only good for the ultimate skill. Equip Ribbons.

>Beastmaster
It's gimmicky but really good. The problem is that it requires too much try-and-error to learn the really good ones (did you know that literally Goblin from the starting location uses Flare when Released) and in the end it's not worth it in most cases when you have better ways to do most everything a Beastmaster can do. But it's also the most diverse job in the game, so if you don't have skills or Blue Magic to inflict one or the other status effect or type of damage, Beastmaster can do it all. Situational, but can be very useful.

Geomancer and Berserker are two classes that are just plain useless. Sorry, Berserker isn't just useless, it's actually straight-up DETRIMENTAL in most battles. Alright for grinding early on though.

Necromancer and Oracle and novelty gimmick bonus content classes so their balance is irrelevant especially since you get them so late in the game.

Float gives floor damage immunity, and since Time is GOAT magic you should always get, not even that can get usefulness out of geomancer.

Berserker's damage boost is cool but a guy with !White can just cast it as a spell on a beefier dude anyway. Or cast it on himself to speed up his 1v1 battle with Exdeath, since White Mages don't do damage very well before Holy, and then remember that you have the cure staff equipped after you cast it.

Try playing the game with the Custom Classes Mod. romhacking.net is down at the moment but you can get it here. http://www.jeffludwig.com/ff5a/download.php

Basically, every class has one command, either Fight or a job-specific command like White magic or Kick, and can assign the other three slots independently (Fight and Item are listed). All abilities now ADD to your stats instead of setting a minimum for it, and all abilities now have stat adjustments (so you could put 3x item on a character for +15 speed at the start before you have anything interesting learned, for example). Monsters are tweaked a bit to make it not a cakewalk.

There are so many abilities in FFV that are just passives you don't really have room for, so I thought this was a neat idea. Only works on US version though. Thief got modified to be kind of overpowered, I don't know what his deal was with that.

GBA. It's pretty much the same game with better content. More jobs, bugfixes, postgame dungeon.

Personally for me, I even like the colors as they are. The music isn't AS bad without the patch as FFVI, but the patch is so damn good (on a flashcart, it pops for no reason on an emulator) that you'll want it anyway.

Only thing worth noting is that some don't like the translation. I personally think that it makes the game more fun though. IT'S MORPHIN' TIME

>> No.2184814

>>2184790
GBA, but I actually don't like the sound restoration mod. I prefer to keep the GBA's version of the music even though not using the patch with its fixes means there will be slowdown whenever Meteor is cast and when you battle Exdeath at the end.

Make sure to use a shader or filter on whatever your emulator is to get the color saturation down to SNES levels though, since it's not supposed to be like what a GBA emulator displays it at (it's not even intended to look that way on GBA; they did it to compensate for the screen brightness on the non-SP GBA models).

Anyway I consider the GBA version mandatory. If you chose not to grind, your characters' coolest combos will only BEGIN to come online at around the final boss area. In the GBA version, in addition to 3 more classes, there's a bonus dungeon with more challenging content and a FINAL final boss after you beat the game, and a boss rush as well. And then after you've finished everything you could possibly ever want to have a new class to do, you get one more class.

It was easy, yeah, because it was a completely fucking mindless "run back-and-forth" thing, except that you had to do it for like fifty times and it took progressively longer on each attempt, as you had to run to the end of one dungeon, to unlock the next room in the other dungeon, then run to that unlocked room to unlock the next room in the FIRST dungeon, then repeat until you throw the fucking DS to the wall in frustration.

Also anyone willing to share some lesser know combos that are surprisingly effective and hopefully don't require ridiculous AP grinding like the Spellblade + Rapid Fire + Dual Wield one that everyone already knows about? Bartz (Knight) Barefist
Lenna (Monk) White or (White) Barefist
Faris (Thief) Barefist
Galuf (Black) Barefist

I swap people around a bit when I need to, like equipping Learning or turning Faris and Galuf into Blue Mages when a new spell is available. When the next set of jobs is available:
Bartz (Mystic) Focus
Lenna (Red) Barefist or (White) Barefist
Faris (Thief) Barefist or (Time) Barefist
Galuf (Summoner) Black or (Black) Barefist

Fist is my favorite spell, after all. I also have everyone swapping back and forth to learn a few abilities from each class, like usual, but that's my travel-ready party. I take different approaches every time I play. The most typical is to stick your physical characters on the classes with endgame abilities until master (after they've learned a quick power booster like Barehanded or Counter) but to switch up your casters often since they can't use tiers of spells you haven't found yet.

Lesser known combos? Well, do people know about Transfusion + Phoenix? One character with Blue uses Transfusion (or uses Quick, dualcasts Time stuff like Meteor then uses Transfusion at the end) to give another character full HP and MP, then another character uses Phoenix (ideally as part of their own Dualcast Phoenix+Quick and Dualcast 2x after combo) on the person with Blue to revive THEM with full HP and MP. Endless MP and probably with a lot of offense/utility in between.

Also Quick is just the best fucking spell. If one of your PHYSICAL characters has an ability slot that is not doing more than doubling their current damage output, you should even put Time on them for Quick!

Then there's the pretty standard Knight combo to beat Gil Turtle: get Float on everyone to avoid its only magic attack, then have everyone put into low HP, then have a Knight use Guard every turn to protect the whole party against the physical attacks. This trick beats any area or monster that only uses physicals too, so it's useful for the fork tower. No ABP required at all.

And if you're trying to get endgame use out of something with no ABP, Chemist is where it's at. None of its mixing really benefits from other abilities (apart from Quick, or Steal I guess), and mixes are amazing right into the endgame. A dude with Chemist class and no abilities equipped is a powerful supportive contributor (or expensive damager) whose effects have no real substitute, no matter what.

The standard game got kinda too easy/boring for me so I do challenges, usually solos but if I get a fun idea for a challenge I will also do it. So far I've done:

Bard Solo, Dancer Solo, Black Mage Solo, Thief Solo, Knight Solo, Ninja Solo, Hunter Solo, Blue Mage Solo, Time Mage Solo

Honeymooners (Only Bartz, only Faris, only White/Black Mage, no commands allowed in battle except Magic)
Free Job No Equip Solo
And a few others I don't remember

Despite all that, I'm still yet to try a Four Job Fiesta...I should do that this year.

blue magic is a pain because you never know what actually counts as a learnable spell until you get it and it's easy to miss them

>> No.2186334

>>2186291
It's actually pretty easy to figure out (though stuff like Mighty Guard is still pretty difficult to acquire). Everything monsters use that's not a White/Black magic or a critical attack like Tail/Sickle etc. is most likely a blue magic.

But even if you don't bother to focus on getting the blue magics, Blue Mage is still incredibly powerful and belongs in every party. With only a handful of spells he can inflict a plethora of damage types and status effects, usually more powerful than any shop magic you can get at the stage of the game.

Also it's hard to miss most Blue Magic spells completely, there will always be an enemy who uses them later in the game even if you miss Death Claw/Aqualung early on

There's some interesting stuff that you can use for specific battles, but without its amazing ally-targeted spells it doesn't have universal, every-battle utility into the lategame.

But FF1 PSX version is the best version, just because of the MP.

Has anyone tried doing any solo runs? I'm currently doing a Ninja solo and I'm at Karnak. Image is fucking amazing, and I can't wait to hit up those scrolls.

I'm probably going to tackle the Time Mage solo after my Ninja run, but I feel like the grinding for TM will take a very long time since you can't hit hard until you get Meteor.

I always grind the fuck out of this game in Galuf's basement and I'm afraid I don't have time anymore. It's really not needed for this game right? You just grind to see broken as shit job combinations. I plan to just never run away and fight everything on the way to the boss and see where that takes me.

This is my favorite game of all time.
Here's what you're gonna want
Have Bartz learn spellblade from the mystic knight class and dual wield from being a ninja
Have Lenna learn black magic and then some sort of physical class. I prefer Dragoon because when fighting powerful enemies, she can avoid an attack because of Jump. Also give her basic white magic so she can revive somebody when she comes back down.
Galuf should learn all the white magic and max out the monk job- This will give you access to whatever healing capabilities you want, but also strong physical attacks in one character.
Finally for best girl, who has the highest innate stats, max out samurai for Faris for the sake of turn by turn physical massacres and a lot of good abilities for grinding such as the Ianuki which can end a lot of encounters in one move, and also max out her summoning magic because it's the most powerful type of magic.

>>2188812
well right now

Bartz is spellsword right now, got the dual wield already
Leina is my white mage but i had her get the hunter skill at first for bow but rapid shot i learned is amazing, also got time 6 on her, set her as dancer now cause i dunno what else to put her as
Galuf is my black but I have the barefists on him too, also maxed out redmage on him so i got redx2
Faris maxed out spellblade and ninja and i got her on ranger for the rapid shot skill grind, samurai was gonna be my next class for her

based on what? The sprites? Cause thats what most the fanart is based on.

It's off model because Faris is supposed to pass for a man. I don't think Bartz and Galuf are literally mentally retarded and would confuse a babyface tittymonster with a tiny waist and child-bearing hips for a man.

That sounds great to me. She could also just be an average/pretty woman who dressed up to pass for a pretty man. But child bearing hips and tits the size of her head just don't fly with the narrative.
