Recently started playing this for the first time, didn't notice until after like half a week of on and off playing that you could increase the speed in battles. I had played for hours on the slowest setting, which pulls the game down to a crawl.
Racked that shit up to the max and suddenly shit got a lot more bearable.

That fucking shithole where you have to find the crown early on had me stuck for way too long. It's so fucking annoying how half of everything will poison you, forcing you to save up and buy a billion cures, and then you have to find the one treasure room containing the shit you need (not a problem after the first time, but still), constantly running away from hoards of obnoxious enemies.
And when you finally get the crown, you need to go all the way back, I had my half murdered party die on the way back thrice, and one of those times it was because I figured I'd just go and return the crown to the elf king on the way back to town, upon which a boss battle started which I stood no chance against.

I'm starting to have the same shit happen on that cave with the vampire, could get down there and beat him, no problem, but then I need to be strong enough to make my way out of there too, and that's where the trouble begins.

Bottom line, this game shows little mercy.

Yeah, there's some pretty unforgiving parts that pop up out of nowhere. They're not too hard once you know they're coming but damn will they throw you for a loop the first time.

My autism won't let me have duplicates of the same class in my party. I usually go Fighter/Bmage/Wmage/Thief.

Final Fantasy 1 homage made in RPG Maker, the resources are generic and its OST is... Hit or miss, but it still has a bit of depth to it.

It isn't free either, but it has a long demo and it's not like there's any game that can't be had for free. Though, the demo doesn't fullscreen correctly.

You get the same six classes from FF1, along with a hunter- the only ones that can tame the wild chocobo equivalent.

The engineer- skills you can learn give double attack to bombs, double the effect of items, and eventually learns skills that translate his Intelligence attribute into a direct attack stat- non-elemental spells that are hard to resist.

I'm glad that this thread is still up. I first started FF 1 on NES emu last night and even though I had only a few fights I totally loved it. Seriously, it impressed me so well: the fight system, the characters, the settings, the nostalgic charm, the high difficulty... Composing the right party is also a difficult task, do you have any recommendations? I'm thinking about using characters of different classes: a figther and a thief for the high strength and HP, plus a white mage for healing magic/support and a redmage for harm magic.

This could also be a possibility. People have been surprised with the shit I've completed more than once, but I don't feel like it was that hard at all.
I mean, with Mega Man you have unlimited continues, so fucking up has few penalties. It's a lot more forgiving than other games of the time that basically required you to play them every day until you knew the entire thing inside and out.
