what's your favourite one, even if full of errors and flaws?

what do you personally consider the best of the genre objectively?

(I'd rather you say two different games!)

do you like the genre, do you prefer older, or newer dungeons?
wide open world, or never really leaving the underground?

I'll bump this thread, I am really itching for a good dungeon crawler.

the dungeons in Quake are fucking fantastic. there are some maps with an open ceiling though and it is by no means a dungeon crawler but what dungeons there are? exhilarating and heart pumping, with a fuckload of clever secrets and challenges around every corner

so let's say, cutoff at Arx Fatalis?
or Dark Messiah?

what are the best grid-lock dungeons?

For me it's definitely OP's Stonekeep!
(best weapons?)
oh the memories...

boy, it hurts me
I finally after years got Arx Fatalis
but couldn't get it to run and it started crashing always
;_;

to me, being buried deep down some endless tombs with moribund lighting is just the true dungeon, never hoping to see daylight
why was the desperate fighting for life in nameless undergrounds with some crazy monsters so damn enjoyable?

It's Ultima Underworld but I'll bring up something obscure and post a pic of Moraff's World.

did you try running it through arx libertatis, the open source port?

I love Arcana for the SNES and I have no idea why, because by all rights it seems like it's pretty mediocre.

My favorite of all time is EO which is not /vr/.

first time i hear of it, i have to try it, thanks!

Im an oldfag (zork old), but some of my my favourite atmospheric dungeons were from Diablo (original). Man that ambient goatman soundtrack still gives me goosebumps, both creepy and nostalgic.

Would Roguelikes count for this? If so, ADOM's Caverns of Chaos gets my vote.

I'm very fond of the dungeons from the old school Zelda games before it went 3D. Not that I dislike the 3D ones but for some reason moving and fighting in the older ones felt super fluid and right.

Anyway I like dungeons that have multiple types of environments and several paths you can take.

Man, great memories. I played that game a ton, had a copy from a bbs and was so impressed i bought it and they sent me a ton of other free games.

Tales of Destiny's City of Rodeon.

There's this feeling of sadness and loss inside of there. Because this used to be a city full of thousands of people. And no matter what they (The Aetharians) did it's still tugs on the heartstrings.

That was the cool thing. You could imagine what the cities of the Aeropolis looked like when they were alive.

It doesn't pull any punches or glamorize anything. The Surface Dwellers won the war but the Aetherians were almost entirely exterminated. And completely exterminated by game's end. :(

Yeah it was basically the best shareware game ever. That and Hugo.

>> No.2173110

what about Albion?
i have some fond memories of crawling with my party almost dead, hoping there weren't many fights left in the caves and shit
