Holy shit, this game.

The first one on N64 was great, but this is just next level. Great Adventure is fucking right.

Can we talk about Goemon? Are the other retro ones any good? I always hear people saying anything released after Great Adventure is shit, but what about the Famicom and SNES entries? Were those decent?

>> No.2165132

The series definitely got better as time went on. The SNES/SuFami games are fantastic and much better than the NES games, which I'd say are just a novelty if you're a fan of Goemon.

Don't play the NES games expecting the character of the SNES and N64 games is all.

Doesn't look like there's a fan translation for the second and third SFC Goemon games. That's a shame.

Anyone know if they're playable without knowing moon?

>> No.2165164

>>2165157
I haven't played the third game, but the second is perfectly playable without knowing Japanese. You might miss out on a few things, but it's a platformer, you'll be fine.

Ah yes, can't go wrong with the Goemon games. I still have the SNES one, along with both N64 games that were released in the US. Here's a photo of mine.

I have no idea what these games are about. I tried watching some gameplay footage and I still couldn't figure out what kind of game it is. Is it sort of like Zelda?

>> No.2165212

>>2165201
They're mostly platformers, MNSG is the most zelda-like you will find. Some of them are puzzle games or board game spinoffs. Honestly the franchise is a lot huger than you'd think.

Mystical Ninja is my favorite N64 game. Last year I finally got a copy of Great Adventure and I tried, I really tried, but I just can't get into it.

I dunno about that. I legitimately enjoyed the 2nd famicom Goemon game.
There's a fan translation of it too, so I'd recommend it to anyone

At some point Konami decided to change things up for the franchise, but the results were a bland futuristic title on the Playstation and GBA and that ugly PS2 game that wanted to go a more serious route. The DS game looks alright though.

>>2165132
I'm curious about the RPG games on the Famicom. Although given the language barrier I will probably never play them.

The only really dumb thing about it is that the only developers that used the controller pak were third party developers that were too cheap to include saves in the actual cartridge. Most 1st and 2nd party Nintendo developers had internal saves.

Does anyone know if the Game Boy games were any good? I remember hearing that the one that was officially translated was shit, while the rest were okay.

>>2165504
It's fair enough that you left the game, it isn't for everyone. If I had to explain my boner for this game, or Goemon as a whole, it's a combination of well-integrated co-op, variety in stages, great music, and corny Japanese humor

And the fact that Ebisumaru is best girl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwY_khZDoqk

If you get a chance, I'd recommend trying another one; each game has a different feel to it. The NES games and first SNES one are less linear, mostly top-down stages. The second SNES game progresses like Mario World a little, and the first N64 game is similar to Zelda. I haven't played them all, but the SNES games feel the most polished, IMO.

>>2165413
The RPGs were the ones where Yae first popped up, and were about Goemon getting his pipe back and winning a huge prize, right?

Those need translations.

And didn't they remove the voice acting in Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, but kept the opening and Impact music?

Maybe they were harder to translate. I know that the first Impact song has him screaming "ORE WA GORGEOUS", and it was translated as "I am the greatest!"

>And didn't they remove the voice acting in Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, but kept the opening and Impact music?

Yup. I don't feel nearly as bothered about that, but I do wonder why they couldn't have just both been left in. There's no editing in the world good enough to mask how Japanese these games are.

I don't think they were necessarily harder to translate. But if the localization team for Goemon's Great Adventure is the same as Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, there's definitely some blind idiot translating going on there.

Only recently got around to playing Mystical Ninja on the SNES which was pretty awesome although it's probably even better if you have a co-op partner to play with.

take it with a grain of salt, since I don't remember where I came across this information, but I thought I remember hearing the localization team could only have the vocal songs or the voiced segments. They couldn't do both because of money constraints. Dunno how that process works though, so can't really say how valid that statement is.

The main theme is by Hironobu Kageyama, and the Impact theme by Mizuki Ichiro, on both games. Maybe Konami in USA couldn't include them due to some copyright issues, it's a possibility.

By the way I loved the phone hot line sidequest with Yae in GGA. It's little things like that that gives these games the amount of personality they have, besides solid gameplay and design, and god tier OSTs.

If it was ever an issue, then it was only for the second N64 game. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon still had the opening and Impact theme.

Shame, because I think Smile Again is a lot better of a theme song even if the opening video is 90s anime as fuck.
