This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

Some tips to bring the threads back to their former glory
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.)
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike!
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming

How do you get such accurate colors of your CRT? Did you turn the brightness down to like nothing?
Whenever I try to take a photo, even with all other light sources eliminated, I get washed out colors.

What camera do you use? What settings?

Kodak M683 is the camera I use.
Close Up mode(I believe it's a macro mode)
Manually set ISO to either 64 or 100, anything higher gets too much noise in the image, and can actually pick up too much of the light; The former mainly due to using a cheap point and shoot. Most of my older "good" shots before I started doing this ended up in the upper double digits and lower 100s.
White Balance set to Fluorescent; Used to leave it on auto, and while I feel this sometimes led to a bit more vibrant colors/photos in general, but I was getting too many photos that came out blue tinted and sort of washed out.
I do adjust the exposure bias on the fly if I feel a certain screen is coming out too bright or too dark.

Setting for the CRT are left wear they are for general use, unless I'm trying to get a very specific photo, like of macro shots of the phosphors themselves rather than what they form.

tl;dr:
Kodak m683
Macro mode
Low ISO(64 or 100)
Fluorescent White Balance

This is the info given for that specific image.

Anyone have experience with the picture not being straight? Within a couple weeks, I found 2 different trinitrons and both of them have a lopsided picture that partially cuts off text.

So in pic related, the black box is the TV screen and the red box is the skewed/angled picture. It's only pretty slight, but it's still there and ideally I'd like to find out how to fix it. Or at least understand WHY both of my TVs are like this.

I acquired a Panasonic 27" 480P set recently that had that problem. Turned out a simple Yoke adjustment was all that was needed. As in, I opened the set (carefully!) and removed one or more of the rubber chocks (White rubber wedges, in the pic i've attached. I then took hold of the Yoke and twisted it gently until it was in the right position, and replaced the chocks. Test and repeat.

Not hard, as long as you're comfortable working with electricity and know what to keep your fingers away from or discharge properly first.

I recommend not do this. The chips (often referred as jungle IC) that drive these transistors usually have a "automatic cutoff protection" which protects the electron guns and transistors from overvoltage spikes on the video input(s).

It's always better to "insert" the RGB signal into that jungle IC that drives the neckboard, it will likely have a RGB input which might be used for OSD or 2 RGB inputs where one is OSD and the other one is unused. Also the RGB inputs will also have a fast switching input to switch between composite/S-Video and RGB.

If you mean stuffing one in along side the CRT bits, doubt you'd be able to find enough space in there to do much more than something RasPi sized; Safely at least.

usually their HD CRTs can display 480p, 720i, 720p and 1080i, no progressive scanned 1080 though. upscalling 240/480i to at least 480p so they're crummy for retro consoles that output 240p/480i but amazing for dreamcast (via vga) and ps2-current

again, just speculating.

Hey /crt/, I've got a quick question for you.
I've been working under the assumption that my PVM has geometry problems, because I've got a picture that warps slightly inward on the right & bottom sides. But today I played a game that allowed me to adjust the picture centering, and when I moved it over the guns did continue to draw to the edge of the screen.
Basically the warping is there but there ARE circumstances under which I can fill the entire screen. Does this sound like maybe it's an issue with the signal source more than my geometry? I figured if it was *just* the geometry the thing would cut off, but I don't know enough about how that works to know for sure.

Don't CRTs never upscale since they don't have a native resolution?

>> No.2153261

>>2153194

I don't know where you read that but it's false. Some CRTs TVs don't upscale, some others do. SDTVs don't upscale because they can only display 240p and 480i video signals. On the other hand, ED and HD CRTs DO upscale an incoming 240p or 480i video signal, because their Horizontal sync don't allow them to display these signals correctly.

CRTs don't have a "native resolution", but a minimum and maximum number of horizontal lines that can be displayed.

I am new to CRT enthusiasm and just picked up pic related, a Sony Trinitron 2530 circa 1988.

I can connect to S video, composite, or old computer monitor cable.

I was wondering if it was worth picking up a SCART to CMPTR cable to connect some of my consoles to it or would the difference between that, s video, or even composite be negligible?
And if it is worth it to do on consoles like the NES, SNES, Master System, Mega Drive, etc would it also be worth it on newer consoles like the Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, Gamecube, etc?

If it is worth doing could someone point me in the right direction to get SCART cables for all my retro consoles and even a SCART selector that I can input multiple consoles at the same time?

Thanks a lot.

From what you've described it's far more likely to be the PVM that needs adjusting than the console. Try it with another source?

The geometry can easily warp that way. A bunch of vertical lines can be bunched together, and next to that another patch spaced apart to make up for the fact the screen is full and there are only so many lines to go around. (Not entirely true, it'd be to do with a magnetic effect near the convergence setup, strong in one place where it shouldn't be, and weak right next to that.)

NTSC Gamecubes are capable of 480P, and it looks fucking glorious, way nicer than Wii games output. The original gamecube component cables go for a ton because the picture is so amazing (and can't be replicated easily because they have a digital signal converter in the console-end plug)

PAL gamecubes and games cannot out put 480P. They will use RGB, i believe, though i'm not sure about any modification. NTSC gamecubes can out put S-Video but not RGB, but can obviously do Component at 480p through the digital out connector, which was removed on later models.

>>2153610
RF<Composite<S-Video<RGB
The jump from composite to S-Video is pretty noticeable. The jump to RGB/EuroSCART is not quite so extreme, but still worth it, especially on a nice Med-resolution PVM like that one. Yeah of course, just none of the games for PAL region will support it natively. So you'll need a modchip or a bootloader to get NTSC games working on your PAL system, or a sfotmodded Wii to force NTSC, and even then there can be problems as some games won't put out 480p, if they work at all. Unless that's no longer the case and my info is old?

And IMO the GC's 480P is golden, and the Wii is a visible step backward :)

"Back in the late 50's A Tech friend of mine built a picture tube rebuilding plant from scratch. He made a living with it for a few years selling rebuilt b&w tubes. Everybody around said he sold the best rebuilt tubes that you could get. He said the secret was in the good vacuum pump and that he used and the amount of time that he pumped down the tube.

He always said that a tube could be made to last practically forever if you could get a high enough vacuum on it. The only real money he put into his plant was in the pump.

A few years ago he retired and brought the whole thing down to my shop for storage. It was a marvel to behold. The cooker was an old upright deep freeze with a pyrex pie plate for a window. The lathe where he welded the tube necks onto the tube was built of scraps of angle iron with a washing machine motor. The device that he used to cut the necks off of the tube was a model railroad controller with a homemade foot pedal and a couple of whittled down broomsticks with metal tips shaped so that you could easily fold the nichrome wire around the tube neck. He said it was the only transformer he could find, at the time, that would hold up to heat the wire hot enough to cut the neck off of the tube. It was very low voltage but would supply hi current.

In addition to the tube plant, he also designed and got a patent on a cotton picker. I've got a copy of his patent on display in my shop. Some of us only half believed him for years, when he said he had the patent, but when he died, we searched the shop and found his patent papers hidden away in a file cabinet of old Sams Photofacts.

Those old guys were something else. They could start with a few old scraps and build something worthwhile and useful."

Anything with more than one line for video is technically a component video source, as it breaks the video down into components of some description. S-Video, RGB/RGBS, RGBHV, and YPbPr/YCbCr/SoG/RGsB,RsGB/YUV are all types of component signal. "Component" when used specifically normally means YPbPr/YCbCr.

"Component" was normally analog, but i think it can be digital now. You'd want to check that.

RGB/RGBS and RGBHV are analog. SCART is a format invented by Peritel using the plug you're thinking of. It can use RGBS, but it doesn't have to. Make sure you check what you're buying or you might end up with a SCART cable that just passes the composite signal, not the RGB signals + composite as sync.

Alright, I have to ask. Assuming everything's in working order, comparable specs (i.e. size, video sources, etc) how much of a difference is there between CRTs? Like, say you have a Slyvania CRT and were getting a Sony WEGA how obvious would the picture quality be?

>> No.2156279

>>2156257
Sony Trinitrons were made completely differently from any other TV up through the early 2000's when the patents expired.
They use an aperture grille instead of a shadow mask, which, long story short, makes it possible for the cathode ray to hit more of the fluorescent coating and makes the colors and screen in general a ton more bright and clear.

I came from a 1995 Magnavox/Philips CRT with a shadow mask, to a Trinitron from 1996 with an aperture grille. The difference was astonishing and I can never go back.
It makes a bigger difference with computer monitors, where detail is important.

On TV's, they will be similarly bright but the trinitron will have far clearer and finer details than the rectangular shadow mask of other TV's can hope for.

Sony struck gold when it started developing the trinitron to avoid paying licensing fees on shadow masks to RCA.

Sylvania is mainly a budget brand and lower quality in general. On top of this, the Sonys use aperture grille based CRTs where as the Sylvania are shadow mask, so the pictures they produce have a different look all together.

I'd suggest a good condition Sylvania over a horribly abused Trinitron, but assuming they're in the same general condition, go with the Trinitron. If you are getting a later WEGA model, you'll want to be careful to not grab an HD set; They have wonderful pictures for movies and 480p+ stuff, but retro suffers.

Should I use one of the rare hf crt tvs of the early 00s that could do 480p and 720p?

What? 4:3 "HD Ready" HDTVs were pretty common, in the early 2000s. Owned a Toshiba 36HF72 myself, & it officially supported 480i/480p/720p/1080i. I believe the native resolution was 1024x768 or at best, 1280x1024. Real HD content did not look good on it. Not sure if it supported 240p tho, as I had nothing to test it with. And RGB to Component adapters weren't really commonplace back when I had mine. I'd still have it today, had the beast not weighed 240 fucking pounds. And I not have anywhere to store it. Not even lying about how much that beast weighed either. It was ridiculous. And all of the weight was on the front. Very awkward to move. Very. I'm the guy he was discussing with, and i think he meant natively:

If a set handles all those resolution formats you mentioned, and if it's not multisync, which is really rare in a consumer set, then it'll upscale the smaller signal formats to 1080i or 720p. This means that while it will show them onscreen, they'll be linedoubled and blurry/blocky compared to on a good set that shows them natively, and there'll also be a small amount of lag.

An EDTV handles 480p natively. A consumer CRT HDTV probably doesn't - it will even list those formats as being compatible, but that's not the same thing. It's going to be better than nothing, obviously, but if the anon who asked about 480p is looking for a TV, he might want to take all this on board.

Actually it goes the otherway, 720p/1080i are downscaled to 1024x768 or 1280x1024 on those "HD Ready" 3:4 CRT HDTVs. While 480P will be upscaled to whatever the native resolution is, be it 1024x768 or 1280x1024. Just as any high resolution monitor would do too. Not really a deal breaker.

There are some CRTs that include multiple decoders so they can display both PAL and NTSC signals. And that's just for composite signals and the like; If you're using RGB, it just comes down to refresh rate(50hz vs 60).

Just about anything made after 2000, and probably major brand sets a bit before, will accept both NTSC and PAL. I reckon it was getting harder to keep hardware in regions, and a lot of players and consoles and other things were making into regions they weren't designed for. Simplest thing was to make the TV's work everywhere, with anything.

PAL region TV's (if older) will accept PAL colour signals from PAL consoles using PAL cartridges/discs. Same for NTSC and NTSCJ(apan). As long a a connector/cable looks right and has the right plugs, it will work in any region - with two main exceptions. EuroSCART and Japanese SCART look the same but use different wiring schematics - if that's even what it's called in Japan. SCART tends to refer to the Euro standard pretty much everywhere i think.

The other exception i'm aware of is Nintendo's proprietary AV cables. The N64 S-Video cables are region specific as the motherboards are slightly different in different regions. Fairly easy to mod MB or make a cable for yourself though, if you're happy soldering.

Modchips or loaders are a handy way of getting around the region locking. Can i ask for a link to the page you're talking about? I think i've found it, but all it does is talk about using an integer scaled resolution. Which makes sense in itself, but what do you do from there? If you create a larger, integer scaled resolution how do you get it to the CRT? I'm using an SDTV with RGBS (from RGBHV). Won't this try to sync entirely wrong?

and finally, from the wiki:
>bonus points if the horizontal res is an integer scale of several common console resolutions (3840 is a common multiple of 240, 256, and 384)

What games have a horizontal resolution like those ones? Isn't a 320x240 240p signal 240 pixels high, not 240 wide?

I'm sure i'm missing something here, but my feeble brain won't engage after work :/

It's a standard def CRT so your Genesis games should look fine on it. That model only has composite and coax connectors, if you get deeper into the picture quality biz, then you'd want to hunt down a model with s-video and/or component inputs.

>I can't quite find how how to get it play anything though

If you're connecting your Genesis through an RF cable, you'll need the TV to be on Channel 3.

I don't see an input button on the tv or remote, so if you're connecting it through composite, either go down one channel from Channel 1 or up one channel from Channel 181.

I'll have a look when I'm able to.
I've had a few people tell me the coils are vibrating and making noise.
But would this still be the case if it seems to happen randomly like I said?
Usually after I have it on for a bit it starts to get louder. I can power-cycle it and the louder sound will still be there until it eventually disappears again.

It doesn't bother me it just worries me because it seems unusual and none of my other (much older) monitors have done this. I don't have any retrace lines or anything. Just this occasional louder 15kHz sound. If I'm being paranoid it is because I love my PVM.

So here's a neat little thing. An NES emulator on the Wii running on a CRT HDTV with a scanline filter.

If it looks kinda blurry (aside from the usual problems with taking camera shots of a CRT), that's because it is. I suspect this TV has severe convergence and focus issues, most pronounced around the center part of the screen.

>>2164875
The condition of the tube is very important if you're concerned about image quality. Properly calibrated, a professional or broadcast spec monitor with a high number of hours can look great, but what they were displaying for those hours has a big impact on that.
If they were just left idle for extended period of time, powered on but not displaying anything, those hours wouldn't mean very much; On the flip side, if they were left displaying a still image or something with still objects(news banners, station logos) you could get hit with a heavy amount of burn in. More hours in general leads to a softer, dimmer image.

Lower hours is obviously better, but it needs to be taken on a cases to case basis.

The S-Video connector on a gfx card outputs in 480i if you use an S-Video cable. AFAIK it's pretty much impossible to get it to output anything else, either 240p or 480p+ unless you code it yourself. This means that sure, you can do it, but at resolutions other than 480i things might not look quite right. Play around and see what you get.

You should just be able to plug the s-video connector in anytime, before boot, whatever, and then go into your gfx drivers/control panel and tell it there is a TV connected. It's only going to offer you SDTV with S-Video, no matter what the set can handle.

The other option is to figure out what exact S-Video/Din connector your laptop/gfx card uses. They're not all the same, and most were 7- or 9-pin. The pins not used for S-Video are used for Composite video, and Component. (And MB audio, can't remember). If you get the right adapter, you can plug your TV in using Component, and then it will give you more options. (720p, 1080i, 480p & 480i, i think). Check what the TV can handle. Either way it's going to be a slightly better picture with 480i.

>> No.2165186

>>2165183

Check the exact pin spacing for any adapter though, as that's really important! There are versions of the socket that have 7 pin-holes and 1 rectangular hole that will take Din 9 (9-pin) or Din 7 (7-pin) plug adapters. There's other version with regular pin spacing.

Note the pin spacing on this one - the middle row of four pins are irregularly spaced: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATI-Radeon-SVID-OUT-S-Video-7-Pin-TV-Out-to-Component-RGB-video-adapter-TVCS487-/261197368082?pt=US_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item3cd0938b12

A regular Din-4 S-Video plug/cable will plug into all the above socket versions. If all you need is 480i this is easiest.

The other options to connect your TV get complicated.

I should clarify that at any of those formats (480i/480p/1080i/720p) you can set the desktop size to be about 1024x768. But the signal is only output at whatever format you select for it. Play around and find out what you like. If all you do is plug the TV in using S-Video and your normal gfx drivers you can't hurt anything.

The late model XBR tubes are very very good for 1080i material. My XBR910 is amazing at smoothing over artifacts but still delivering great color and picture quality, although the convergence/focus/geometry are all slightly fucked, as one should expect from a consumer set. One day I'll get it adjusted, they are certainly worth keeping, even if the lack of native 720p support is disappointing.

But they aren't terribly great for retro games. Any input other than 1080i is going to get internally scaled just like an LCD would, and induce lag. Since it's scaled they also don't get scanlines or anything cool like that.

Basically, the 640x480 interlaced and 640x240 progressive settings will display a similar output in arcadeOSD, but the internal computer resolution will be lacking all of those extra lines with the latter.

I should probably try a custom output via linux, since that's a lot easier to go about doing.

I'm not really making them manually yet, but I suspect I'll have to learn how to adjust them because some of the normal modes (especially "640x480i") have vertical overscan issues, and I have to make a big drop in the V screen size in the service menu.

Are you using S-Video cables?
S-Video over SCART is not really standard, many TVs with 2 SCART sockets only support RGB over the 1st SCART socket and S-Video over the 2nd one (and must be enabled manually).
If you would connect S-Video to a SCART port that doesn't support S-Video then you would get a monochrome picture as the luminance (brightness signal) is passed through the composite pins and chrominance (color signal) is passed over the red channel pin.

It's a Grundig TV. Sorry about the label with the info being in spanish.

What puzzles me is that it says it takes PAL N, M and NTSC through RF and PAL B/SECAM via SCART.

Yet, I've plugged...
1) SMS and SNES through RF and they never showed any color.

2) Wii via composite to SCART adapter - it's in color for 2 seconds, then greyscale. Same for a clone Genesis - that one stays in color in 50 Hz thanks to a region switch.

3) Any RGB-capable system I have (PS1/2, SNES) plugged via SCART gives color.

Now, if it can interpret the colors correctly (as in item 2) why does it switch to B/W?

And why on earth if I've bought a spanish NES console, which is PAL B as the label says, was displayed in color and now it doesn't anymore, neither for PAL nor NTSC games?

>do CRTs have some kind of advantage over LCDs that modern games could benefit from?

Yes they do. CRTs still have superior colors, contrast and motion. Even modern games will look better thanks to the vibrant and natural colors, and smoother thanks to the CRT not being a Sample & Hold type of display.

Also, there are ED and HD CRT TVs, as well as some high quality PC CRT monitors that support the resolutions of modern systems.

Found a 20" Trinitron on Craigslist with a stand I don't need for $25

Want to grab it but want to ask them about the display's condition and the actual dimensions of it, since there's a shelf I'd like to put it in, but don't want to send a text at midnight, so I have to sit here antsy and hoping no one else beats me to it while I sleep.

Also, I've never had one before, does anyone know what type of inputs it has? The TV I'm using now for my retro setup isn't great, but it has two RCA inputs (currently house DC and Wii) and two RF inputs (Genesis/CD and NES) and I'm not sure I'd want to replace it even for a better display if I'd have to move one of my systems. Ignore the PS2, I am in the process of moving around my crt vidya area, and that's the only place for it at the time being.

It's been awhile since I posted a picture of my Dhoney, I have posted in the past inquiring about some things, but never got an answer.

On the back, there is a antenna port (the antenna on the tv is seperate, it plugs into the same slot, but doesn't work anymore cause analog) with a 75 (im assuming ohms) on it; would like to find an adapter that turns it into a standard port for me to screw a rf adapter or cable into.

There is also an s-video port, which is what I use maybe 100% of the time with an s-video switcher I believe is dying after a few years of use. Finally, there is a scart adapter, not sure if it does RGB as I live in the US and know nothing about scart, but i'm sure I could use a psone with a scart adapter and it would work.

What can I do to improve this area? Any good adapters? Thanks

Also, upscaling is bad, mmk. a lot of old console up to 5th gen output 240p. Most new TV's only handle 1080p natively, or at best 720p. They will upscale anything in lower res, and the job they do is appalling. You can get around this using upscaler boxes, and good ones are expensive. CRT's designed to show 240p natively do a much nicer job.

Not sure how i got the display to show up initially, but I ran ArcadeOSD, click-and-dragged the menu over to the CRT, told it to lock to that (second) display, then moved it back so i can test modes and still see the OSD menu on the laptop's main desktop.

Got a couple of questions about my CRT. It's a shitty flatscreen Magnavox that I've had for about ten years.

Firstly and most importantly, it emits a rather distracting low pitched sawtooth wave sound from the tube in addition to the characteristic high pitched CRT whine. This seems to be related to the picture, because I can hear the pitch of the sound change when I switch to an input that's disconnected (black screen). I should note that this sound comes from the tube and not the speakers.

Besides that, I can also hear a low pitched hum through the headphone jack. This hum is constant relative to the volume of the TV. I'm guessing this is a power issue, but I was wondering if anyone might be able to elaborate.

Slightly unrelated and off topic is a problem I'm having with the ancient (early 2000s) satellite box I have hooked up to that TV. I've noticed that it's having some interesting issues as it ages. Most obvious is this luma bleeding effect that happens after a bright spot in a scanline (pic related is what it would look like on a Nintendo). There is also a bit of a moire effect perpendicular to the scanlines that shifts subtly as the box tunes in to a channel (visible on the program guide too). I don't really watch TV, so this is mostly a curiosity, but if someone has any idea about what could cause these I would love to hear it.

Don't bother trying to adapt the antenna jack for RF.

The Brionvega Doney accepts RGB through the SCART port. SNES, Genesis, and Playstation 1/2/3 all output RGB if you use a SCART cable. A composite to SCART adapter would work for VCRs or systems like the NES where composite is the best video without modding.

You have a very cool tv!

The cable going into the modulator itself seems awfully thin, so I can't see it being very likely that it actually has 9 separate wires running to it, but how difficult would it be to connect it to the hacked apart SCART cable I have laying around?

The one problem I can see is I don't see the din connector coming apart very easily or going back together for that matter.

Hmmmm, as i understand it, the four-number PVM-BVM variants (say the BVM-2000AP, or the PVM-1454) were late 80's for the former to early 90's for the latter. The latter also has the 16:9 letterboxing option for it's 4:3 size tube. I don't think there were later series with four numbers in a row, and pic related of the BVM-1911 makes me think of the PVM-1454 vintage, but with the extra key-locked tray of controls at the front.

My best guess is that you're looking at an early to mid 90's made unit, with an OSD and an HR tube (with a 900TVL resolution according to broadcaststore.com)

You'll want to confirm what inputs it takes/BKM cards it already has, or you might get stranded. In Australia, if the tube is in good condition, it'd go for about $300 on ebay.

Well, i just gave it another go, and it works fine. I have it set to 640x480 (480i) by default now, but i can change it by just selecting another mode (within scanning range) and then keeping it, then setting that as desktop default. It flickers a little under interlaced modes, but making sure the screen is bright enough compensates nicely. It should normally be way brighter and more colourful than an LCD - I had to open the automatic 75Ohm terminations on the rear of my PVM-14M4A. Or you could try building a simple RGB amp with like a THS7316 or something.

My previous instructions were what i did, this time and before, only to get the ArcadeOSD to switch monitors i used the "2" key. Then lock it, then you can drag it wherever.

Hmmm, ok, i just had some issues going to 480i after playing with some 240p modes. I clicked on the desktop to tell it to default its resolution to 640x480, and then went back into ArcadeOSD and that fixed things.

If none of this works, try the Arcadecontrols forum, i think it is. The poster Calamity is the real expert on all this. I think he's one of the devs of crt_emudriver.

I love it though, it's got a great picture compared to all the other CRT's I had back in the day (my grandma still has a CRT in her room, and it's fine, but this has a sharper image and better color).

S-Video is fine, i'm gonna order a PlayStation scart adapter off of amazon, I read that ntsc PSones are capable of outputting. As for rf, i'm gonna need an adapter that allows me to screw in pic related. I would like to be able to watch some cable from my room at night.

Righto, now i understand. So any Radioshack or place that sells electronic components, or any cable place, should have RF/F-59 adapters. You might need an F-59 plug to TV socket (pic related), then an F-59 joiner (basically two bare screw-ends back-to-back) if you can't get it in one. There's also slightly larger sizes, F-60, I think? So check that out to make sure. These are the Australian names for the sizing, so apologies if that doesn't help.

Yes, you can use a SCART cable for your PSone. Just make sure you get a SCART RGB cable, and not a SCART cable that passes only composite or S-Video. There was talk of a Sync-on-Luma SCART cable available from somewhere, in case the Doney doesn't like using composite as sync (SCART RGB passes composite to use for sync as well as the three RGB lines and a few others). Can't remember which ebay seller has those, but hang around and ask again if no one sees this post :)

And holy shit, you said S-Video. I can't read. What you want is just a playstation S-Video cable then. Those certainly exist. Make sure you get a decent one that actually uses S-Video, and not one that just passes composite through both lines on the S-Video plug.

You could possibly use a SCART adapter for that, if the TV S-Video socket is faulty? But I'm not sure if the TV will take S-Video through the SCART plug. Some Euro can maybe help out there...

An RGB SCART cable might actually be cheaper and easier to get than an S-Video one at this point, if someone can list that good supplier. It will certainly give a better picture, if not by an earthshattering amount.

>>2174180
svideo through scart is not standard, so if your tv accept it you have to make sure which pins take Y and C, if the adapter does really route Y/C right or if it just bind them into composite in.

At that point it's indeed safer to just go RGB scart

some cables don't work because they don't include av and/or blanking wiring, resulting in either tv not switching to AV channel (some old tv don't have av selection), or image shown being composite because of lack of blanking (few tvs have rgb selection so this is crucial). I came across such cable that lacked blanking, fortunatelly it's fixable with the right resistor.

unfortunatelly there's little way to know beforehand without looking at pins and insides.

I'm thinking my issues are down to win7 or the way this particular card (HD 2000 something) is working with the drivers. I've got a 640x480@60i and @60p mode and they are both outputting the exact same "looks like 240p" picture, so I'm thinking at some point something is defaulting the card output to whatever is being pushed. The PVM menu isn't much help, it just says 480i or 575i depending on if it's a PALesque or NTSCesque resolution, even down in the 240/272 range.

I highly assume a hardware defect on IC001 (microcontroller+digital video processor), either the IC itself or the components on pins 37 and 40.

I think it's possible that a service menu adjustment could help.

for ps2 you should just get component cables. Although I don't know how you monitor would react to 240p through component, as it seems to cause some trouble. Some accept it, other don't.

If you go the scart route, I think you need a sync stripper to extract it from composite video.

On a semi related note;

Why can't Retroarch Wii support "double strike" windowboxing for GB/GBC/GBA games like WiiMednafen?

Yeah, RetroArch Wii is iffy with the scaling. It may have been fixed by now on more current builds, but on 1.0.0.2, if I change the resolution and aspect ratio settings on one core, it fucks it up for another core if it doesn't run at the exact same resolution. I have to manually set the resolution every time I want to play Genesis, and then again if I wanna play NES.

Of course, once properly setup, the image is great. You can even insert scanlines through an overlay, as seen earlier in the thread on a Sony HD CRT.

>if I change the resolution and aspect ratio settings on one core, it fucks it up for another core if it doesn't run at the exact same resolution
Try switching it to "Core Defined".

I have Retroarch around mainly for CPS2 emulation at the moment; Genesis and NES both have their own emulators that I use.
The problem here is it's impossible to get a properly scaled image for any of the Gameboys, especially in 240p. There's no resolution you can choose that will give you clean integer scaling, and there is no way to have it not get stretched to fit the chosen resolution.

It's technically playable on Mednafen, but by no means enjoyable; Even turning on frame skip doesn't help.

Most of the photos I took didn't come out that great, but a few are alright.

RPTVs are large and relatively light for their size. They also have poor viewing angles. Anything that shimmers and gets darker off to the side is a RPTV. Direct-view CRTs are completely diffuse; i.e. no problems with viewing angle (until you get to very low angles, and the glass starts to refract).

Or, just tap the screen. The face of an RPTV is usually a coarse plastic Fresnel lens, while the face of a direct-view CRT is glass.

>> No.2177775

>>2177714
Parts can fail, and capacitors might very well need a replacement depending on the age of the set in order to get the best picture quality. For light home use you probably don't need to worry too much about static image burn or general tube wear, but do keep in mind that you want to aim to get a low-hours CRT if at all possible. You can find replacement parts for CRTs, but I assume that availability could be an issue depending on the model.

In the end, treat it gently, don't leave it running for 8 hours a day or something, and worry about problems when they appear. What will happen will happen, but if you get a decent, well-kept CRT with minimal use it probably isn't going to fail on you tomorrow or anything. Most are sturdy and while they might not look the best due to burn-in and whatnot, but there are decade+ (and emphasis on the +) old arcade monitors that still function, and your home-use monitor will see MUCH less use than those.

>> No.2177780

Thanks dog! This is what two years of /crt/ threads do to ya. The rabbit hole is deep and if you're not careful, you might enjoy the fall.

On par with TVs? Sorta. Crt computer monitors are capable of much higher resolutions than tvs, both of those do 1600x1200. Typical standard def tv does 480i, and that's just fine for retro games.

The WEGA you linked would be a fantastic all-around retro set, it's got high quality parts and all the inputs a retro enthusiast would need, but I'd recommend hunting through thrift stores and local Goodwills to get better prices. Ordering crts is both expensive and risky if the seller doesn't properly pack them. Both those monitors I got off craigslist, and I got my PVM at Goodwill and my WEGA at an independent thrift store. Do a search for "sony monitor", "sony crt", and "sony tv" on craigslist and you should see lots of options.

The main problem I've seen about ALL of the CRTs I see locally is that all of them ahve really bad pictures. Like, the color is all whacked out, and the geometry is a little fucked up, so they're slightly fuzzy in spots, and it's impossible to correct even with the on-screen menus

Downloaded the color bars for my SNES linked above and this is the best I can get on my pvm (using blue only mode). What am i doing wrong? My pvm is a 14m4e. I'm also not sure why when I try to auto balance the colours the TV goes through some transitions only to go back to what it was and says error. Do these things mean it's broken? Please help

You'll find a good one, just keep looking. And it'll be all the sweeter for having waited

>PVM
Your what? Also, which of the two displays I posted is the better option? Should I theoretically go for the WEGA or the 420gs? I suppose I'm more interested in emulation in general, but not opposed to anything

Professional Video Monitor

It's professional/broadcast tier equipment originally intended for editing and monitoring video feeds, as well as certain medical uses. Non-consumer gear built to a higher spec and from higher quality parts in general.
In many cases, properly calibrated of course, they'll provide a sharper, more vibrant and accurate picture than just about any other CRT that you could put them up against.

>Should I theoretically go for the WEGA or the 420gs
Are you looking for PC CRT that you can use for whatever you'd like, be it video/movies, PC games, emulation, etc?
Or are you more interested in being able to connect up older "original" hardware (or stand ins like the Wii)?

The 420gs will be more flexible in what you can use it for, but the WEGA is simpler in the sense of "connect up and go" if you're looking to get original hardware displaying at the original resolution.

I'm mostly going to be emulating I think, I just wanted to know what your opinion was on the actual quality of the image. I don't know if there's a major difference between CRT monitors and CRT TVs even though the underlying tech is the same--that's really what I'm asking here

I'd rather get the monitor but if it is totally different and I won't be able to produce the same result with zsnes+monitor then I'll consider my other options

If it's for emulation, go for the monitor. In terms of quality and sharpness, a PC CRT monitor, especially a good Trinitron set, will beat all but the highest end PVM and BVM CRTs, and they interface with PCs much, much more easily. However, if you are looking to get the authentic 240p look you see in these threads, that's a bit harder. It can be done, but you will end up with very thick, black scanlines, and possibly reduced overall brightness.

even if it doesn't look authentic, will it still look better than an LCD?

Even at line-doubled 480p, yes, by a wide margin.

is that simply what happens when rendering at 480p? or does it require special config? can I replicate it on an LCD with filters?

>> No.2178649

>>2178643
480p is the closest you can get to authenticity on a CRT monitor without resorting to esoteric methods such as creating custom resolutions, inserting scanlines or black frames, etc. Even so, it beats the shit out of using an LCD, thanks to the vastly superior motion quality, black levels, and colors. Even with the most expensive LCDs, you have to pick at most two of those.

On a slightly less gay note, I need more "crt'd" reaction images.

Outer two bars are adjusted with chroma. Inner two bars are adjusted with phase. Auto calibration only works with the right SMPTE pattern.

Thank you for the descriptive reply! However I'm going to assume you cannot access that menu without the remote huh... Therefore I'm fucked..

Semi-relevant but I think it makes sense to ask here: what's a good component video switch/selector to use that I can be sure won't have any detectable quality loss? I've already got a nice Sony brand one for S-video but I'd like something for the PS2 and Wii (not retro I know, but will be using for PS1 and emulated games, of course).
