What are some good flight stick games? The only thing I've tried with my Gravis Destroyer Extreme, pic related, is Starfox 64 and I can only imagine there's better uses. Keep it /vr/ of course.
Mine has three "face" buttons, a trigger, what I can only imagine is a throttle dial (which can be programmed as a button), and a precise aim button (which cannot be programmed as a button.) It's a mode where the deadzone is set to like 95%

Story: So my friend and I are both into retro games and both enjoy gag gifts. At some point, he picked up this for cheap and gifted it to me with no idea of what I would use it for. See, I'm a good friend and when I gift him something, such as the fishing rod controller for Dreamcast, I already knew his Soulcalibur game was compatible. Seriously. You, presumably, have to swing the controller high for vertical attacks, horizontal for horizontal attacks, and low for kicks but we could never use it consistently. Alright, he had a couple fishing games too.

Only 4 buttons? DOS games. Can work quite well for racing games.

Effectively 5 with the throttle dial. For Starfox 64 I had it setup as the boost. Would probably work well as a turbo button as well.

Thanks for the idea and the list! I'll look into these and if the threads still up let you know how any I tried went. I've considered using them for simpler games in general such as anything on the NES but was hoping for something more along the lines of this controller would be good for rather than this controller can work for.

That is a fantastic idea. Going to look into other Star Wars games like Rogue Squadron and maybe even use it for vehicles in Battlefront

X-Wing vs Tie Fighter or X-Wing Alliance? I'm leaning towards X-Wing Alliance just because it seems new and improved in comparison, but newer isn't always better.

Oh wait, it's USB? That's odd, not quite that cut out for dos games, I guess then it depends on if it's got a decently weighed base and can be used with the left hand on something else. If not, you could always attach something heavy to the base.

>>2163707
What are they normally? I know virtually nothing about flight sticks.

I think I'd be fine using my left hand for stuff as long as it's not too much. WASD would be fine, but 8 different hotkeys might be an issue.
I've considered Mechwarrior but never actually tried.

I can use XPadder to emulate the keyboard, and then emulate most retro consoles, so pretty much any game goes.

That eliminates the point of an analog joystick.
You should be able to configure it directly for DOSbox and some emulators.

PC joysticks are different from arcade ones in that they are analogue and meant for space/flight sims and such.

>> No.2164387

>>2163891
Well. That's a good thing to keep in mind. I've been configuring it in game when I've been using it, the anon just made it seem like it wouldn't work for DOS games. Are there even DOS games that would take advantage of it being analog? Good to know you can use it for DOSbox, all I've played in it is DotT and it would be awful for that.

>>2163869
I don't want to search "space games" and get shit like Gradius. I don't think that game would benefit from this.
100% Chance I'll be checking out Descent though.

>>2163929
Well. Yeah. That's why I called it a flight stick...
Also, I can only imagine you can get arcade style joysticks for PC as well.

Well. I've resorted to Googling it which I probably should have started with
Going to be playing:
>Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance and other Star Wars games
>Descent/Freespace
>Mechwarriors

>tfw you snagged two working Gravis Blackhawk Digital sticks from a box on the street but they're not compatible with any gameport to usb adaptors

Everyone online keeps telling me to rewire them by hand but there are no guides whatsoever. What do? I don't have the money nor the space to get me an old PC with a gameport just to use them ;_;

It wouldn't work under regular DOS versions but DOS box is something completely different. Even stuff like FreeDOS has USB support.
You can map relatively freely in DOSbox with CTR+F1.

Thanks for the info! Although I pretty much have transitioned over to PC gaming for modern(ish) games, all my retro gaming was done on consoles (save for the Army Men series)

Gonna be trying out some Star Wars games and Afterburner II later tonight!

Holy crap Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance is fun, but I suck at it really, really badly.
Tried the first mission and had no idea what I was doing so then I tried the combat simulator on default settings.
I was unaware default settings sets you up against veteran AI.
So, after having my ass handed to me I tried again with novice AIs, and did much better but still lost.
Don't quite have the hang of where to aim to hit enemies (I've noticed you have to shoot when you have a green circle in your crosshairs, but I can rarely get that to happen) and the laser recharge thing confuses me, but I will be playing more.
Gonna play the maze and training ground next time before I go back into the real fights.

Thing Omega Boost would be good? Planning on giving that a try later.

How's Independence War 1?
Got it from GOG, but found you couldn't -- at least from what I saw -- rebind controls. Is there any way around this? Mapping for the Saitek X52's a pain and a half.

>> No.2166329

>>2163735
No, they are USB normally, but that's a gravis joystick, and it looks rather like a basic joystick, as opposed to a flightstick, hence equally suited for the rest of joystick games,
if it isn't stiff and sensitive.

>>2163754
Most retro consoles? I already explained the issue with using it for platforms newer than DOS.

> Are there even DOS games that would take advantage of it being analog?

It's awfully predictable what a control setup with 4 buttons and 4 axes between all joysticks tends to take advantage of. The real interesting question here is whether anything else would work with with an analog controller that's got four buttons(four buttons and a throttle is even less likely, two buttons per player sound possible though)

I cannot believe nobody has mentioned it in this thread yet. For shame, /vr/. OP you should be playing the Wing Commander series RIGHT NOW.

and when you're ready to come back to Earth play Strike Commander

tbh for fighter games, xwing alliance is the best. the simulator allowing you to setup whatever you want is the shit.
