I always hated how some versions of FF6 censored the scene when you first meet Celes. Nothing major happens. While on the subject, the Cliff scene censorship? So silly. Ruins the intentions/feelings.

I sold my copy of Super Castlevania 4 when I got the superior Akumajou Dracula. All religious references and blood intact. Some fucking bullshit castlevania censorship is the new generation though, sorry for that one europe. Also changing the mask to purple in the TG16 version of splatterhouse, really? That one just had to be paranoia like I don't get how that could be trademark infringement anyway. Rick is the good guy and Jason Vorhees is a murderer.

Ducktales had the Crosses on the caskets changed to RIP for the US.

I played three SNES beat em ups recently playing the USA version, Final Fight, Ninja Warriors and Sonic Blastman. I was aware that Final Fight missed Poison/Roxy but it pissed me off than Nintendo of America also censored the girls on those other games.

What? The people who censored Maria from the NA version of FF6 were Nintendo of America, because it was their policy to remove all religious references from games. It's not because "the Japanese" were afraid of "offending" Americans, it was a policy enacted by Americans to establish Nintendo as a "family friendly" company so that people would buy games for their children.

As for the scene where you meet Celes, that was a different situation... some time after FF6 originally came out, CERO, the organization in Japan that rates video games on content (basically their version of the ESRB) decided that showing violence against a restrained person should automatically bump the game up into a "teen" category. Square-Enix decided that if the port couldn't be sold to younger audiences, it would hurt their sales, so they simply cut the scene from the game to appease CERO.

How is Maria a religious reference anyway? There are tons of video game characters named Maria and no one got upset.

To start with in-game graphics are almost never changed in localization, konami is the only company to really do that and even their stuff was minor.

Why does Korea have the characters changed to robots? The singficant localization change ever made was in the contra series the characters were changed to Europes and that was in the German version not the korean. There is almost no localizing for the Koreans.

Games not localized to fit japanese audience ever, games that are deemed to foreign are just not released.

This comic has the concept of an American game being localized when exported. This stuff never happens. American game companies if anything give the less shit about localization.

One additional oddity about the hippo model is that in the German non-DX version of Link's Awakening, whenever you'd talk to the her, there'd be a slim chance she'd say "Noch nie eine nackte Frau gesehen?" (never seen a naked woman before?). Knowing how games operated back in the day, I'd say it was probably a 1 in 256 chance, but don't take my word for that. Also, the Blob enemies didn't say "Nie ohne Gummi". What they actually said was "Nie ohne Kondom!". Claude M.
