I bought one because I was drunk but still cognizant enough to realize I wanted to consolidate space yet play stuff on TV. Unfortunately you can't use multicarts or flashcarts on it, and last time I tried there were a number of games that wouldn't even run like Akumajou Densetsu (not sure if support's improved any since this summer). Anyway after my head changed back from a lollipop with the word "sucker" on it I ended up realizing I could use TV out from my computer.

You can get a Famicom converter for NES cheaper than this thing costs and you aren't missing out on any PAL SNES games. I can think of only two good ones that they got and the US didn't and you can still find Japanese versions of them. Terranigma would be a bitch if you didn't know Japanese, though.

Assuming you're not a shill, I'll help you out.

Since the Retron 5 isn't portable in the slightest stretch of the imagination, you'll be playing it at home anyway. In which case, it's better to just get some emulators for your PC, since the Retron 5 is just an expensive Android box that runs stolen libretro code.
The PC versions of RetroArch are much more capable than the Android versions anyway, so you'll get better quality gameplay too. Plus you won't require the actual cartridges, which is just a limitation Hyperkin coded in for the hipster market.

If you're put off by the idea of emulation (why the fuck are you considering an emulator box?) then just get a few flash carts. It'll obviously cost you more than just downloading emulators, but you'll get the quality of real hardware, something the Retron couldn't, cannot, and will never provide.

If I don't give a shit about original hardware, I'm already emulating. In between those two types of retro-gamers, I'll grant, there may exist a small subset of people who want to plug something in, even perhaps into a CRT, but i'll bet that unit doesn't output 240p.

What I don't get is, if it's about consolidation of space and shit, why not just hook a laptop up to your TV? I'm using an old laptop right now that can't even run vanilla World of Warcraft and it emulates everything up to and including 5th Generation perfectly. There. A perfect emulation machine for my TV that takes up zero space, that cost me nothing except the effort of taking the old laptop out of the closest and a few downloads.

Emulators are more like reverse engineering than stealing. You don't just wire up a SNES with a USB port and connect it to a PC to get an emulator on the computer. They don't generally distribute emulators for profit as far as I know. Plus, they can be legitimately used to test out backups - people do actually back up saves and undumped games and use emulators to verify the integrity of the backup. ROMsposted online on the other hand are simply stolen data dumped from carts. The only legit uses I can argue for ROMS are to replace a broken cart or to analyze version/build differences between what is online and what you own.

Pretty much this. If your PC doesn't have a video card that can output to your TV, use the $150 or whatever toward one that will. If you're one of those types that's really a stickler about roms, get a Retrode (hard to find now, though) or something similar and dump them from your games. That's what you're doing with the Retron anyway. Long and short is that you can spend the same money and get something that has more utility for other things.

The retron is an amazing piece of hardware that let's you collect and invest in the retro craze without having to bust open and solder 30 year old jumbles of wires and circuits just to get an old NES working. It even includes modern emulation based features, such as filters, save states, and fan translations. Grandpa's Nintendon't do that.

All this in a sleek, minimalist design that takes up almost no space and let's you play on an ultra fast Bluetooth controller. No wires, no hassle.

Yes it likely will as, like said earlier, it just dumps the ROM temporarily (along with SRAM if it exists) and plays it. It likely wouldn't be able to identify the game for the sake of displaying it's name in the main menu or cheats.

Take it from a Retron 5 owner. If you really want to save space, get Everdrives for all your systems. After 10+ games for any given system its already eating more space than the footprint of your consoles, so a single everdrive for a system will save a LOT more space than a retron 5 and a load of carts will.
