Hello there /vr/.
Eversince the redump project is out, I decided to download some classics I wanted to replay or to find out some new ones.
So far I have download the following US/PAL games.
The adventures of Lomax
Gex
Mickey's wild adventure
Klonoa: door to phantomile
Skeleton warriors
Spider the videogame
Strider 1
Strider 2

Do you guys have any more suggestions? Japanese English friendly should be fine as well

How Gex counts as an 'obscure' game?

>> No.2147707

>>2147698
Finally an answer.
It was released back in 1996 in exceptionally limited quantities. While it received good reviews, it wasn't successful as it's 3DO counterpart nor spawned any other 2D games.
Gex as a franchise was known for their 3D games, the original release was and still is an obscure game for the PS1.

i think gex 1 was very dkc in design, all it had going for it were huge sprites and good production values
its still fun tho

You're correct, I doubt there would had been a Gex without the DKC. Still, I like Gex better, while I loved the first Snes DKC, I couldn't play the sequels due to Gex. They were like kid's games to me ever since.
>>2147727
The original Gex release of 1995.

nigga go play DKC2, it's one of the finest platformers there is.
Also, in game design, Gex is nothing like DKC. The only similarity is the prerendered graphics.

I only played the 3DO game back in the day, it was a neat game visually, gameplay, from what I can remember, could have been better, but it wasn't bad.

I also thought Gex isn't obscure at all, and I thought the PS1 version was the same as the first 3DO game?
Whenever I think Gex, I think the first 2D game, not the 3D sequels. Same deal with Earth Worm Jim. (although EWJ had one 2D sequel and various handheld games)

>nigga go play DKC2, it's one of the finest platformers there is.
>Also, in game design, Gex is nothing like DKC. The only similarity is the prerendered graphics.

I tried it back in the day, also numerous times ever since. I just can't hooked up with it. Gex to me perfected and overcome DKC 1-2-3 in every single aspect, with a possible exception of music.

I also first played in on the 3DO, however I never bought the system, so the PS1 version was like a fallen star in my back yard for me.
The two versions are virtually the same, however the 3DO utilizes the internal memory while the PS1 version uses codes.
The 3DO version is one the most sold games of the system, if not the most sold one. It even came with a bundle, so it's pretty common and easily available there.
However the PS1 version isn't the same case. It was originally released on a long clear case in the US for a very limited time. The magazines back at the time were hyped for 3D games, and few 2D games were just reviewed as they should.
And Gex wasn't one of those cases. The magazines were pretty biased about not being three dimensional so it got barely over the average grades.
Ditto on that thought, to be honest I don't even like those 3D Gex games at all. Also the same case with EWJ.

I guess 2.5D counts.

Hercules on the PS1, the one based on the Disney movie. I'm not kidding, it's actually good.

I didn't like Gex 1. Password saves on a disc game is ridiculous. Only Mega Man X3 is excused since it's an SNES game.

>>2147724
Not even close. DKC was more fast-paced and linear (especially DKC1), offering a variety of different challenges. Gex is more open and "exploratory", and just felt sluggish to me, at least from what I played of it.

No, it's not. It's a mediocre, disappointing game with incredibly repetitive gameplay and ugly graphics. 2D Disney games for 16-bit consoles were much better (expecially Aladdin for Genesis).

If you have Wii (or if you can emulate it at your PC), prefer the superior Wii remake of Klonoa.

Technical wise isn't anything that we haven't seen before, gameplay wise however it is not bad at all. I think you're exaggerating here.

While not 2D, PepsiMan seems great. I'm looking for unknown Japanese gems not widely renown in the west, pretty much like PepsiMan.
>>2149328
I do and I love the Wii remake. I'm currently looking for PS1 2D games, I'm going to open a thread about Wii ones when the time comes.

Now, here's a mostly unheard title to the US gamers, Mickey's wild adventure. The 16bit ports were released in the NTSC markets, while the PS1 one was an exclusive to PAL territories.

I noticed that ps1 games overall are pretty inexspensive. Even the local record store that charges 60 for mario kart and 50 for Oot (smh). You think that will ever change in terms of inflation or you think ps1 game prices will stay flat. I need some anon economic expertise.

>> No.2151541

>>2151441
Well big brands will gradually continue to have raised prices.
Most of the kids buying well known games such as Mario and Zelda games, even without owning or having access to their respective systems, "just because".
Pretty much the same thing occurs with franchises like FF on the PS. I mean, you have to pay something like 50-60$ for a mediocre final fantaser saiven game, something unimaginable for a commonly available game.
Short answer, games being part of franchises will always have big prices and they're going to be more expensive year by year.

Varied and interesting levels/mechanics, only bad things are that it's too short, and has no save feature.

I'm adding Skullmonkeys, awesome graphics and soundtrack
