While playing the Banjo Kazooie game for GBA it struck me that perhaps this is what Super Mario FX was going to be.

The FX chip doesn't push remotely enough polygons for a Mario game environment. But it has other uses like accelerating 2D as seen in Yoshi's Island.

As the GBA Banjo game reproduces very completely the kind of controls I'd expect from such a title I see no reason why an isometric "3D" Mario closely resembling the complexity and layout of Mario 64 couldn't have been done on SNES.

I guess I'm also surprised there was no 3D Crash Bandicoot on GBA, looking at what the Asterix and Obelix GBA game accomplished.

>> No.2143520

I remember as a kid I thought Super Mario RPG looked "almost" like Super Mario 64, looking at magazine screenshots before these games came out.

>> No.2143535

Asterix and Obelix XXL came out right at the end of the GBA's lifespan. The complete understanding of the hardware necessary to wring such good 3D out of it simply didn't exist when those Crash games were made. And Crash titles for PS1 had loads of sidescrolling, so it was as authentic as necessary imo.

It's more surprising to me that there was no GBA Starfox.

I think the gba was considerably more powerful than the snes, more comparable to the Jaguar for example.

It only got half as many bits. It should be more comparable to a 3DO, PC-FX or Xbox.

GBA is closer to the PS1 than the SNES. The main bottleneck for GBA was not processing power but storage capacity.

A PS1 disc could hold ~650mb of data (textures, voice, CD audio, fmv) plus there were plenty of multi-disc games as discs were cheap to produce so you could produce games like the FFs that are actually a gig or two in size.

GBA carts topped out at 16mb.

>>2143550

He was being silly. Actually they are very close, Doom GBA is a port of the Jaguar Doom code. Jaguar has a really stupid bottleneck in the architecture that made any significant amount of texturemapping impossible at a reasonable framerate. The GBA didn't, so despite being the same or only barely more powerful, we got some very fast, fluid texturemapped 3D games on the GBA later in its lifespan. It's a glimpse at what the Jaguar might've been capable of with more competent design.

Yeah, any processor before the Athlon64 was less powerful than the N64's VR4300...

What he is trying to say is that it is a ridiculously small size compared to 1 gig ps1 discs.

I believe that is actually how mario 64 came to be, it began as a 3d yoshi game for the super fx chip, but was moved over to the n64.

Check out the unreleased Star Fox II for SNES, there are 3d segments in that where your arwing grows legs and you can walk around and jump

Actually, the guys behind Starfox pitched that Yoshi idea to Nintendo and got turned down (and later claimed.that Nintendo stole the very idea of making a 3D platformer from them).

Then they turned it into this abortion.

Yeah, because Nintendo, a company whose mascot stars primarily in platform games, could never have come up withh the idea of making a 3D Mario plattformer for their new 3D console.

Considering what a Croc of shit their game turned out to be compared to Mario 64 maybe they should just shut their Gobbos.

Never seen the ad yet I knew he was joking.

Reminds me of the schoolyard, where some morons would claim that such-and-such a console was technically superior to any PC because its word size was bigger. Them were the days...
