What version of Silhouette Mirage should I get, the Saturn or PS1 version? I hear the Saturn version is better, but there's no English translation and I can't speak moon.

I don't remember where, but now that I'm reading the Wikipedia page, I do see that the PS1 version has more content. I also see that the PS1 version is apparently harder, but I always like a good challenge anyway.

Saturn is typically better at handling 2D games, however I only played the PS1 version of SM.

The difference is really between the working designs ``localization`` and the japanese version, in the original your weapons dont deplete in ammunition unless you are shot with the inverse polarity and the shop values are cheaper
in the WD version you´re constantly running out of ammo but you can suck back energy by hitting enemies with their same polarity ie blue enemy with the blue shot will restore your ammo
shop values are quite a lot more expensive so you´ll need to grab and punch every single enemy and conserve ammo
be sure to mash right button while in the shops, there are hidden, much stronger options in the menu if you push to the right

i didnt like any of the minigames in the WD version, personally, you can play as zophar during the credits and there are even harder difficulty settings but all they do is change yours and the enemies´ health values

also the story doesnt make much sense but at least you can say Working Designs did a great job with the dialogue, its funny and I dont know, really weird? its very sci fi anime
the language doesnt get in the way of the gameplay at all besides the tutorial in the beginning and a yes or no choice at the end that alters your ending

If you're buying, stick to the japanese release as all workind designs games were limited collectors editions that usually go for a lot on ebay.

If you're emulating, you should really play both starting with the japanese. Be advised your first playthrough of the american localization will be frustrating as hell.

Last I checked SM goes for pretty cheap. Maybe 30 bucks tops

I don't think the PS1 version is as "bad" as people make it out to be. It may take a bit for the system to click with you, but once it does it becomes very playable. You'll know which weapons are better than others, you'll find the easy ways to get cash and ammo, and the game will lighten up considerably.

I think the "losing ammo" thing is what really drives people up a wall about the PS1 WD release. In the Saturn version, you don't lose spirit energy unless a similar-polarity attack hits you. In the PS1 version, attacking uses spirit ammo, and must be regained by attacking enemies of the same polarity as you.

Usually there are enough mobs of enemies that you can rapid-fire your weapon and gain back all of your energy in one go, but it's something you have to watch out for, because if you run out of energy, your current weapon is sacrificed to "refill." This can actually be a tactic to get a quick refill if you have a weapon that you don't particularly like.

All in all, the PS1 version is what I would recommend - it has the charm of the localization, and an extra boss added to it. It's a tough game to learn, but once you figure out the tricks (and secrets!), the game almost becomes a little too easy.

The Death boss fight was added into the Playstation version. Maybe another boss, too? I'm not sure - I do know that the Death fight is not in the Saturn version, unless there is some later re-release.

I played the shit out of the Saturn one, and while the ol' WD charm was there, I couldn't stand to play a whole lot of the PS1 version, mostly due to the constant character voice every time you jumped or shot (I can't remember which). I don't even remember if that was in the Japanese version, but if it was, then it was a LOT less annoying there.
