2120773 No.2120773 [Reply] [Original]

Which would you say is the definitive version of this game? I'm going on a long trip and I need something to kill the time so I figured I'd finally play this, but it's been released and re-released on a gorrillion platforms.

>> No.2120778

DS version has the most accurate translation and the extras from the PS1 version.

Yup, either DS or Android/ios if you're into that sort of thing. SNES has a worse (if a bit funnier) translation and less content, and PSX is maimed by load times.

Thanks guys. I reckon emulation should take care of any loading issues so I'll go with the PSx version

>> No.2120836

>>2120819
You could try, and using an ISO helps a bit, but there's still loading times whenever you enter a battle or open a menu. I've tried emulating it a few times and the lag never goes away. If you've never played Chono Trigger before you may not notice, but it's still there. If you're emulating, you'll have a better time with the DS version.

>> No.2121173

>>2120773
DS and SNES versions are definitely the go-to versions since the PS1, PSN, and mobile ports have some annoying issues like having obnoxious 5+ second load times, among other things.

That said, people are rather divided about the SNES or DS one being the superior of the two. Some people prefer the quirks of the SNES one while others enjoy the improved accuracy of the DS port. That said, mechanically both work well, and the DS version's a solid port job (minimal loading, if any as I recall, and it features some nice options to try to appease both old fans and newcomers, such as allowing one to decide whether to have everything on the top screen, or to move the menu to the touch screen, freeing up the top one from being cluttered). Also helps that it's pretty cheap compared to the SNES version if you actually want a copy of your own (at least here in the US, where the SNES original goes for a good $80 cart only, while with a bit of patience you can score a complete DS copy for about $20; figure it's a lot more expensive in Europe and PAL areas since they never got a version of the game until the DS port 14 years after the SNES original). Only real downside to the DS port is some of the new content Square-Enix added not being that good (like the Lost Sanctum being rather tedious), but that stuff's optional and the content ported from the original is still enjoyable.

>>2120778
I wonder, with that thing byuu made could there be a "complete" version made for SNES now? Since you can add in FMV sequences with it though I dunno how advanced of a hack one could make with the CT ROM editing tools (if the other extras could be brought into the SNES version).

>> No.2121216

DS, but not by much. The translation is mostly the same but with uncensoring/expansion outside of Frog, and a lot don't like the new ending. Monster arena is a lot of fun though.

Biggest thing:DS has the PS1 FMVs. Mobile is an inferior version of DS that encouraged me to get an emulator though.

This. Mist of the arguing is over smaller points and MUH CHARMS. Except for mobile and PS1, which aren't great, all versions are good so far.

They'd threaten everyone distributing it. It would be available only on torrent sites, and they'd sue those as well.

They already did that with a shit load of Chrono Trigger related stuff.

My nostalgia is telling me snes version. But i see nothing wrong with the DS version. DS has a few sound issues with some spells translation is better in a lot of ways but i still miss Sir slush But your still hungry frog's old english dialogue but none of this really takes anything away from the DS version. That is all nitpicking. i would pick DS or snes up to you.

>> No.2122447

>>2121918

The only sound difference from the spells that bothered me was magus' dark matter.

I did notice them my first time through, but even when nitpicking its hard to hold minor sound effect differences against a version of the game with more content, even if its weak, more chrono trigger is never bad.

Do you know if the mobile version has the extras gallery? I know it has Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum, but that it doesn't have the Monster Arena or the anime cutscenes, but I'm not too clear on the gallery. It's really hard to find information about this version online.

>> No.2123765

>>2120773
Actually, there's only a questionable PS1 port, a DS port and an Android port. Android has mandatory filtering. DS has tiny text. SNES original has a fun, but occasionally slightly censored translation.

Really, there's not much difference. I wouldn't say there's a preferred version.

Also, keep in mind, that there is the difficulty hack and the retranslation hack, neither of which I'd recommend, but they do exist.

All in all, the script is the major difference. Do you prefer a slightly funnier, but less accurate translation (SNES), or a fuller but somewhat blander translation (DS/Android)? Or, if you prefer the weeaboo-centric version where they call the villain 'Maou-sama", get the retranslation patch and play that on an emulator.

OH WAIT, I entirely forgot.

The Android version IS BROKEN. It doesn't work on a lot of phones, and Square doens't care. It doesn't work on Samsung Galaxy II or III, for example, and a lot of other devices. You can buy it, but you can't run it. Chances are, it doens't work at all anymore. People shit all over the review section on Play Market, but nobody cares. The game hans't gotten a patch. It's not coming. It's completely unplayable (literally - it doensn't boot) and they aren't going to fix it.

Why? Because it doesn't download the whole game. It downloads sections as you visit them. And at first it did work, but then it stopped, and now the game simply crashes at launch.

tl;dr they sell it to you, but it doenst run, and they are NOT fixing it, period.

Pic related, but you can just go to play market and see for yourself.

I bought it last week and it works flawlessly for me. Maybe I'm just lucky.

>Why? Because it doesn't download the whole game. It downloads sections as you visit them. And at first it did work, but then it stopped, and now the game simply crashes at launch.
Not true, at least for me. The game does download sections three times (first boot, first gate travel, first sewers visit) and that's it. It's still working as of early this week at least.

I'm replaying it for the third time at the moment, and it's my first time playing the DS version. I'd say DS version is the best version. Only thing that bothers me a little is that I don't get to see the game in fullscreen mode but it's worth it.

Don't. I've heard an unsubstantiated rumor that the loading issues are caused by the game translating menu text on the fly, thus making it unavoidable.

The DS one is probably the definitive version, if only for the PS1 fmvs and being portable. It's also affordable if you're not emulating.
Just ignore its shitty extra content. The Dream Devourer and Lost Sanctum were fucking terrible, which is a shame in a game that has such a great selection of sidequests.

>>2126136
I know a lot of people give the games art shit because of Toriyama's style and sameface, but I really can't imagine Chrono Trigger without his involvement.
He gave so much whimsy to the world and characters, and the concept art before he redesigned them is drastically different from the final product. I'll take three Vegetas if we get Robo and Frog out of it.

The sage ends up as Gaspar in the final game, actually.

I agree with >>2132863, I like Masato Kato's initial designs a lot more. I don't care much for Frog (not even his theme) so I don't think two Bulmas and Vegetas are worth it.

I also like how the sketches prove that this was Kato's story from the start, Cross haters get btfo.

Cross' story isn't disliked for being fanfiction.
It's disliked for being needlessly convoluted depite its simple premise, being an unfinished mess of poor pacing an exposition dumps, and the jarring tonal shifts between the two games. It also felt like it couldn't decide whether or not it wanted to be a spiritual or proper sequel, since the El Nido Triangle feels like a completely separate world from the one in Trigger.

It was a really ambitious project, way more than Trigger, but the final result was really sloppy. You can tell the game needed another ten hours of play time in disc 2, and even then the sudden shift from a lighthearted Dragon Ball-esque adventure to a darker Xenogears-esque epic didn't really fit well together.

Out of curiosity, where are you finding those things in English at? Was there some design/artbook for the game that was scanned and fan translated, or something along those lines?
