Not really too sure what I'm going for here, but I want something kind of relaxing with some good battles. Grinding doesn't really bother me. I'm normally not an RPG guy but I want to change up the pace for the next game I attempt to beat. Here are some that I have beaten and enjoyed.

- Sailor Moon R: Another Story
- EarthBound
- Pokemon Diamond

Here are some that I played and didn't beat but kind of enjoyed from what I did play.

- Final Fantasy VIII
- Grandia II

Not really sure other than that at this moment, but just kind of go nuts with your recommendations, RPG-heads. YouTubes or webms would be nice and maybe what you like about it/some neat things but without spoilers.

Try FF7. It will keep you interested.

The first grandia is cool.

I'd say it really depends on what systems you have access to, whether you're open to emulation (some JRPGs can get quite expensive), etc.

That said, I'd recommend the PS1 Tales games (especially Eternia/Destiny II due to various refinements over previous entries) if you want to change things up from the usual turn based style with some real time, 2D sidescrolling combat (helps that most regular battles go by pretty fast when you know what you're doing), as well as Wild Arms 1 and 2 if you want a change of scenery (Wild Arms tends to use a wasteland/frontier sort of setting and draws inspiration from western themes; 3 on the PS2 rolls with its Wild West vibe if you want to keep playing past the PS1 games).

Also Chrono Trigger if you haven't played it. All around great game that still holds up quite well. SNES/DS/VC versions are the preferable way to play it though, as the PS1, PSN, and especially mobile version tend to have issues.

Anyhow, the SNES and PS1 saw a LOT of JRPGs. If you just want some general names to look into and see if they sound like stuff you'd find fun, I suppose I can list them off too.

Oh and my friend recommended the following but I'm still not 100% sure what to play so that's why I asked you guys. The two that I thought I might play from his recommendations upon YouTube review were:

- Suikoden
- Final Fantasy IX

I still want to hear recommendations and find out what I think would be best. I'd really like something simplistic on the equip/spells side of things.

I'll be emulating on my JXD device so Dreamcast or earlier are fine. Saturn won't work out though.

Oh and yeah I tried Chrono Trigger when I was younger circa 2000~ on ZSNES. I got stuck on the mountain climbing in the windy snow area. Years later I realized I'm an idiot for not being able to beat that part so that may be an option.

>> No.2102203

>>2102176
Kind of sad that Saturn emulation doesn't seem to have made huge strides, at least from what I've seen. You'd think there would be some decent effort to at least get Panzer Dragoon Saga working well with it, given how fucking expensive that game in particular is.

Anyhow, if you just want some general ideas of stuff to look into.
SNES
>Adventure of Hourai High
>Bahamut Lagoon
>Breath of Fire II (fan retranslation)
>Chrono Trigger
>Dragon Quest III, V
>Final Fantasy VI
>Glory of Heracles III
>Illusion of Gaia
>Live a Live
>Lufia
>Lufia II
>Metal Max Returns
>Romancing SaGa 3
>Secret of Evermore
>Secret of Mana
>Seiken Densetsu 3
>SMT I and II
>Soul Blazer
>Star Ocean (Also on the PSP as First Departure)
>Super Mario RPG
>Tales of Phantasia (The PS1 has a more refined version; reason for playing the SNES version these days is mainly to see the origins of the series, and even then you're stuck dealing with DeJap's infamous fan translation)
>Terranigma
>Treasure Hunter G
>Treasure of the Rudras

PS1
>Alundra
>Arc The Lad Collection
>Brave Fencer Musashi
>Breath of Fire III and IV
>Dragon Warrior VII (possibly the longest JRPG you'll ever play between the amount of content and dialogue pacing)
>Final Fantasy VII, IX, Tactics
>Front Mission 3
>Grandia
>Legend of Legaia
>Legend of Mana
>Lunar and Lunar 2
>Parasite Eve
>Persona 1 and 2
>SaGa Frontier 1 and 2
>Star Ocean: The Second Story (Also on the PSP as Second Evolution)
>Suikoden I and II
>Tales of Destiny and Eternia/Destiny II (Also the PS1 remake of Phantasia; games get more refined over time going from Destiny to Phantasia PS1 to Eternia)
>Threads of Fate
>Vagrant Story
>Valkyrie Profile
>Wild Arms 1 and 2 (3 on the PS2 is also really good from what I hear and goes full wild west)
>Xenogears

Might be a few ARPGs and SRPGs strewn around in there, but that should be plenty of ideas to look into. Just be aware that some of them require fan translations to be patched in.

Only 16-bitters or later? Just assuming, cuz of the games you've listed.

Try:
Lunar I&II SCD/PSX.
Popful Mail SCD.
Vay SCD.
Final Lap Twin TG16/PCE.
Phantasy Star II and IV MD/Genesis (III is a sidestory and not necessary to play).
Brave Battle Saga MD/Genesis (with English patch).
Final Fantasy IV/II, V (with English patch) and VI/III SNES.
Robotrek SNES.
7th Saga SNES.
Persona I, II-Tsumi (with English patch) and II-Batsu PSX.
Breath of Fire I, II (SNES), III and IV (PSX).
Wild Arms I and II PSX.
Chrono Cross PSX.

Those jump immediately to mind.

My top 5 RPGs:

Baldur's Gate 2 (Windows)
Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (MS-DOS)
Fallout (Windows)
Final Fantasy 7 (PSX)
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (Sega CD)

A few runners up:
Final Fantasy II-USA/IV (SNES)
Phantasy Star IV (Genesis)
Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines: Colons (not retro)
Langrisser 2 (Genesis/Megadrive)
La Pucelle Tactics (not retro)

Something that is a common feature in all of them: compelling story, gameplay that is fun and never grueling, good music (a must), and replayability. I am a connoisseur, you can't go wrong with any of those. I own all physical copies of all of them because they are worth it. Pic related is from Lunar 2.

I was too slow with that one, and the image, too. In any event, great game.

In any event, the Genesis/CD is the only "retro" console I've bought in the modern age and it was worth every penny. Awesome RPGs, awesome shooters, awesome action-platformers. All the other stuff I listed (SNES and DOS/WINDOWs) I've had since the 90s.

I'd start with IV instead of IX and the PSP version of IV at that but either one is a pretty decent starting point for FF.

If you like how every character is different, play III/V/Tactics, if you liked the cinematic-ness of the game the most play VI and onward until X.

Suikoden is a must-play either way, especially the first 2.

But hey, whatever floats your boat. Play what you want to play.

The first one is quite lousy, whereas BoF 2 is ok and even has some unique stuff in it. Haven't played 3 and 4 but there was a whole thread for those here in /vr/ and I guess they're considered to be quite good.

I definitely recommend Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Final Fantasy VI and Front Mission. Tales of Phantasia is also good, whereas Star Ocean by the same company is honestly quite bland and messy.
