Which Sonic do you prefer, /vr/?
Mega Drive/Sega Master System/Game Gear/Saturn, or Dreamcast?

http://strawpoll.me/3094465/

>> No.2096937

Currently, the sanic franchise is completely dead to me.

But to answer your question, I like both just as much. I grew up in the 90s and loved the games on the Mega Drive. Naturally, when we got a Dreamcast, I played Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, which still stand as the only 3D games in the franchise that are thoroughly enjoyable to play.

I have a lot of great memories playing both kinds, but just for the sake of it, I voted 'Dreamcast' on your poll.

Could be, seeing that the majority here loves the Dreamcast.
I'm a classic man myself, but I don't get the hate for Adventure. No, it doesn't play itself. Yes, the hubworld in the first one was annoying. It was stylized and modernized just enough not to go over the edge.
oldSega has nothing to do with the shit that came out later seeing that modern Sega isn't really the same company. Most of its key staff moved on shortly after the bankruptcy and the publisher Sega-Sammy is today prefers to either rush or outsource work on the franchise to shitty developers for a quick cash in, possible because of a fanbase that wasn't really around when Sonic and Sega was relevant.

Sonic Adventure is the stereotypical early 3D mess, and I love it. Yes, the camera is hard to control and the animation is goofy and the story isn't that great, but it's still a blast to play. Most of the Adventure haters are /v/ kiddos who like Egoraptor's edgy opinions and never actually play Sonic games for themselves, or if they do it's only the modern ones.

The Dreamcast games have honest points of criticism, but you never hear Sonic critics talking about Sonic 3 or Knuckles' Chaotix.

3D Sonic has been a synonym for shit going on 15 years now. There were a lot of detractors as soon as the Adventure games came out.

Me, I love the Adventure games purely for nostalgia, the Sonic/Shadow levels, and the corny as fuck OSTs, and I'm cool with that.

I can recognize that they have terrible cameras, lots of glitches, SA 1 has the awful as fuck hub world, and SA 2 has the boring mech missions and terrible treasure hunt missions and that the 3D gameplay isn't nearly as good as the 2D, but I would be lying if I said I don't pop 'em in the ol' Dreamcast every once in a while.

Madeline Schroeder pls go, Crash Bandicoot did this and they worked their way out by giving Crash a sister, which could might as well just have been Amy to Sonic (that would have meant no Tails though). What matters is that the game was going to be a success either way, just as Crash was, even if he was saving an anthropomorphic bandicoot with boobs.

Madonna could've been something like pic related only less pretentious and more cute, not to say Yuji Naka dropped the concept on his own because he wanted to focus on Sonic and Eggman.

I just recently replayed Adventure 1.
There are only two good Sonic stages in that whole game. Like, holy crap. The Tails stages are mildly enjoyable. Knuckles stages are surprisingly fun, because the radar isn't gimped to hell and back. Big... yeah, I'm just going to play Sega Bass Fishing instead, fuck Froggy. Amy's stages are a pain. Gamma's stages should be better, but aren't terrible.

Adventure 2 holds up significantly better, even if there's even more bullshit throughout (far worse Knuckles style stages, boring Tails style stages, and now you can't just ignore the other gameplay types). Most of SA2's Sonic/Shadow stages are at least decent, if not good.

and it's still bad overall
But then again, that doesn't matter, since I can pop in any Sonic/Shadow stage in that game and enjoy myself, barring the mess that is Final Chase.

>>2098925
Chaotix has no actual level design. At all. It's stilted, disjointed, oddly vertical, and overall a mess. It's still surprisingly enjoyable despite that because playing around with the rubber-banding is fun.
Godly soundtrack though, and gorgeous graphics.
Pretty sure not enough people have played it to criticize.

I never really liked Sonic's designs. His early designs borrowed too much from 90s trends. His designs now look like an awkward mix between the 90s style and anime. Nothing has a timeless quality like the earlier vidya icons' designs, which might simply have been a result of technical limitations.

For me he was the first of many forgettable characters with trendy designs like Crash, Gex, and Banjo that swamped platforming games for a decade.

Crash looked and acted like he was supposed to be an energy drink mascot. The gloves and sneakers are especially dated.

Both of them remind me of the kind of stuff Poochy lampoons.

His shoes are loosely based on Michael Jackson and Santa Clause. If anything, Sonic comes from 70's and 80's style, with some 20's thrown in, since he's also based on Mickey and Felix.
>The only unique thing is the blue color, a marketing gimmick.
What the fuck? Sonic was supposed to be a "cool" character. Not "edgy" "radical" or "cuhRAYzee" like shitty American marketing and post-2000 games likely subjected you to. It only makes sense for him to have an appealing color that compliments his character. In no way is that a gimmick.

Sonic is not a Poochie. He was created by good designers and developers with the intention of making a good character for a good game.

DuckTales is a pretty weird example since it's basically just an adaption of Carl Bark's Donald Duck comics, which have been widely popular since they were created, just not in the US.
Disney has always been popular, and probably always will be, so pointing to one of their biggest franchises as some sign of the times feels strange.

There's no point in arguing with you if you're going to straight up pull shit out of your ass (the designers have specifically said the blue color was meant to represent the company brand) and make up arguments for me (none of my posts call Sonic "edgy" or "radical" or whatever).

Sonic's development was a reaction against Nintendo. Essentially a Mario killer. And mostly that lead to developing a flashy character who was doomed to be trendy.

For the record, I love the early Sonics except for his design (and half of the cast). The music and level aesthetics especially.

>>2118048
That's a pretty bad representation of DuckTales and Disney. Of course I'm familiar with the comic, and anyone who's seen both sees the obvious differences. DuckTales updated the comic's premise with massive 80s Hanna-Barbera influence.

And Disney is a multimedia empire, but it hasn't "always been popular." Its animation output was in a pretty big slump in the 70s and 80s. DuckTales was the first major TV cartoon success for Disney, which paved the way for the slew of shows that came after. DuckTales along with the Little Mermaid helped Disney cartoons thrive in the 90s.

I think I like the Genesis design a tad more. His look just seems more quirky (for lack of a better term) and loveable to me than his later versions. I really don't. It's not hard to see that Sonic was a product of his times, unless you're completely ignorant of those times, which you seem to be.

Look at the popular cartoons of the time and explain how Sonic doesn't resemble them: TMNT, DuckTales, Chipmunks, Garfield, etc. They all came out before him and are clear influences, and you're claiming he started that trend (unless you're talking strictly within vidya, which is exactly what I claimed in my first post).

Not only that, but it makes business sense for Sega to design a character based on trends if they want something that can surpass Mario in popularity. And it worked extremely well until the trends faded. Now Sonic's not much more than a cult/retro icon, especially while Sega's churning out the shit it does.

>unless you're completely ignorant of those times, which you seem to be.
Not as much as you, apparently.
Anthropomorphic animals have always been common and popular in fiction. In mythology, in literature, in films, in animation, and now in video games. You might as well blame Mario's success on Donkey Kong being a cartoon animal while your at it.

>TMNT, DuckTales, Chipmunks, Garfield
None of the characters or themes from those originate in the 90's, so you can't really look to them for signs of trends. Not to mention Sonic and its lore don't even resemble a single one of them.
>are clear influences
You're just pulling shit out of your ass and/or grasping at straws.

Sonic's design was mostly developed around his abilities and personality.

>> No.2129081

The only "clear influences" on Sonic's design that I can see are a combination of Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat, primarily Felix, both in appearance and personality.

Coincidentally enough, people who worked on Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog went on to work on The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat.

Now I'm starting to understand why you don't see my point. You clearly don't understand the concept of trends or fads. A concept existing doesn't mean its popularity stays constant.

The anthropomorphic character fad was at a peak when Sonic came out, which is exactly why I mentioned those shows. All of the characters existed before that in less popular forms, but the late 80s/early 90s was the trend's apex. Sega capitalized on the cartoon animal trend by creating a character following it.

Your Mario/DK counterexample is pretty bad. You actually could have brought up a good point about them. The fact that you didn't is a further example of your lack of familiarity.

>Not to mention Sonic and its lore don't even resemble a single one of them.
Sonic visually resembles all of them except the Turtles, even if they're all derived from the same Krazy Kat design.

>Sonic's design was mostly developed around his abilities and personality.
And his personality is clearly derived from the Turtles, with the "gotta go fast" shit tacked on.

>>2129081
You could say the same thing about Heathcliff and the Chipmunks (and other anthropomorphic cartoons), except the same people worked on them before Sonic.

>The anthropomorphic character fad was at a peak when Sonic came out
No, it was at its peak in the 20's - 40's.

>All of the characters existed before that in less popular forms
The Donald Duck theatre shorts were far more popular than Ducktales

>Your Mario/DK counterexample is pretty bad. You actually could have brought up a good point about them. The fact that you didn't is a further example of your lack of familiarity.
Because there is no point to be made there. Mario and Donkey Kong succeeded because it is a good game, Mr. Ad Hominem

>Sonic visually resembles all of them except the Turtles
They are all small cute cartoony animals, but they don't look very similar. You'd never hear anyone say "Hey, Sonic looks a lot like Huey, Garfield, and Theodore, doesn't he?"

>And his personality is clearly derived from the Turtles, with the "gotta go fast" shit tacked on.

No, early 90's Sonic and 80's TMNT are both inspired by western US surfer/skater culture. That shit was popular back then, the Turtles didn't popularize it.

That image is pointless. Pairing major deities with children's cartoons to make a point just shows how flimsy your argument is.

>No, it was at its peak in the 20's - 40's.
You obviously don't understand the idea of trends because you act like trends can only have a single peak.

>Because there is no point to be made there.
>I am also not familiar with this character development so I will dismiss it

>Mario and Donkey Kong succeeded because it is a good game, Mr. Ad Hominem
I'm talking strictly about design. Sonic also succeeded because it was a good game. Great deduction skills. Also, what is this "Mario and Donkey Kong" game?

>You'd never hear anyone say "Hey, Sonic looks a lot like Huey, Garfield, and Theodore, doesn't he?"
Actually that's how I've felt since I've played Sonic games when they came out. That's the basis of my personal opinion.

This. And the whole snowball of bullshit started with the Dreamcast redesign. You can see how they redefined several key aspects of the franchise (and the character, of course) when they didn't really need it. It was perfectly fine. Just to consider one aspect (not usually discussed) of it: I'll never understand how Sega could choose jun senoue over the chaotix guys. Sure some autists like the buttrock, but come on. Have you heard the Chaotix OST lately? Redesigning Sonic like they did was a heartless, 200% marketing-informed move. No wonder it failed, no wonder it poisoned all games from that point on.

It was both. they switched a loveable, potentially timeless design with just enough attitude with a tall-ass teenager chatterbox piece of crap. In terms of broad, massive appeal, Sega objectively missed the point with modern Sonic. In terms of autists and furries, they were spot-on I guess.

And I agree with you, the Adventure games were crap compared to their predecessors (not that it's hard to tell. gameplay mechanics, story, aesthetics... the whole thing took a dive quality wise) and that's saying a lot, considering Adventure 2 is generally regarded as one if not THE best 3d Sonic game.

Only slightly for Sonic 3 (The stage completion, game over, and bonus stage themes are his only confirmed compositions) and his contributions to 3D Blast are the worst songs in the game. Not awful, but they pale in comparison to the 3/4 of the game's music which Tetsuyuki Maeda was in charge of.
