>> No.2093887

>>2093242

Sega of Japan and Sega US were more like 2 different companies who hated the sight of each other than 2 divisions co-ordinating with each other, and had been for a long time.

When the Sega CD was being developed in Japan, Sega US got *no* development units for their own first party development teams to work on and had to cobble together prototypes to work on. They had nothing to offer to third party developers in the US who's support for the Genesis/Mega Drive effectively stopped Nintendo having the industry as its puppet.

Those developers were now pissed that Sega was working on marketing a console they'd make no money on.

THEN later they pushed forward the Saturn launch and screwed over some retailers because what Sony were doing with the PlayStation scared the living daylights out of them.

It was a string of management clusterfucks. Dreamcast being Japan only?

Almost seems a sane decision if it meant they'd have functioning network and modem play rather than another fundamentally undermined console launch.

No.

Sega used a platform called SNAP (Sega Network Application Package) to handle the majority of the online games for the Dreamcast.

After they pulled official support for the system they ended up selling the network platform to Nokia, who renamed it "Scalable Network Application Package" and used it for the N-Gage.

Because of this, it is basically impossible to ever get Dreamcast games back online without reverse engineering SNAP.

Assuming that did happen, it wouldn't change things because the server software for the games themselves has been long lost. Since packet logs weren't recorded from DCs that were playing games online it's impossible to even know where to begin for recreating servers for Dreamcast games.

There are still a number of games that are available to play online though:

> Quake III Arena
This is playable because id used the same client/server setup that the PC version of Quake III uses. You can setup your own servers using the PC version of Quake III, a specific point release, and a Dreamcast map pack

> 4x4 Evo
Used Gamespy, can still connect with a modified masterlist

> Phantasy Star Online
Playable on custom player-created servers

> Maximum Pool
Also playable on player-created servers

> StarLancer
Used GameSpy

> Planet Ring
Custom Servers

> Doom
A homebrew port of Doom that can be played online by directly connecting to the IP addresses of other players, but requires the Broadband Adapter

There is a glimmer of hope that the online functionality for Unreal Tournament may be coming back at some point though.

The failure was both Sega's (for all of the stunts they pulled with the Genesis/CD/32x as well as the Saturn) and consumers (for buying into the Sony bullshit hype machine), but it wasn't the system itself that was at fault.

The system itself was fantastic, it had a ton of awesome games, was significantly more powerful than the PS1/N64, and had forward thinking features like a focus on online play and the ability to browse the web.

Not to mention cool peripherals like the VMU or the ability to use KBAM on a console or stuff like the fishing controller or the Sambe De Amigo Maracas.

I agree,i still liked it though ,walking through the streets of 80s japan was really cool and there was so much attention to detail.

What killed it the most for me was the horrific english voice acting ,sega should have saved the cash and gone with english subs.

That's because the story of Shenmue was supposed to be told over sixteen chapters. All of Shenmue is the first chapter, chapter 2 was supposed to take place on the boat in between the two games but was cut, and chapters 2, 4, and 5 are Shenmue 2.

Shenmue isn't a one-off game, it is the first game in a series that is comprised of a long, long story that was cut short early in development due to the commercial abandonment of the Dreamcast.

It feels like nothing develops because you're playing it as if it was a self contained story, when in reality it's the first chapter of a book.

On the Dreamcast, probably over three or four games total. You can see how Shenmue 2 ramps the storytelling speed up much faster than the first game did.

>>2097026

Well, the other option is to compress story elements and cram multiple games into one release, which means you have to cut corners since the first game already took up 3 GD-ROMs.

Pretty sure Yu Suzuki and Sega were expecting Shenmue to be a pretty big deal. No one expected the DC to shit the bed commercially like it did. Sega was poised to kick some serious ass with the Dreamcast - it was available a year earlier than the PS2 and at 2/3 the price (1/2 when the PS2 released). It had a shitton of great games, as well as online play and the ability to browse the web. Sega even ran their own ISP and toward the end would straight up give you a Dreamcast if you signed up for it for two years.

By all accounts the Dreamcast should have exploded, the conditions were perfect and everyone was confident that it would. But it didn't.

Releasing a game that is the first part of a multi-pat story makes perfect sense when you believe that the console you are releasing it on is going to end up in millions of homes.

Shenmue 2 lays on the exposition a bit thicker but Shenmue is effective in conjuring the air of mystery. **Ryo's dreams, the Hazuki Dojo basement, Master Chen and Guizhangs' vague explanations, etc**. Plus, foreshadowing with the snippets of Chinese culture. Given how ebin the series was meant to be, for the first chapter of sixteen it gets the job done.

I'm planning a major dreamcast mod in the coming months. it's one my buddy sold me which had a case in terrible condition.

I'm going to be sanding and painting the case. dark gray and black. i originally wanted to put one of the cats from chu chu rocket on the lid, but i can't find an orange paint that doesn't suck. i might put a blue sonic silhouette on it even though i don't like the sonic games for it aside from shuffle.

I'm going to replace the led with a blue one, maybe find a pal lid and replace the Orange sticker with the blue one, or find a place that will make me a custom sticker of a blue swirl with a gray or black background. i also want to get 2 more stickers with a translucent background with the Windows ce text and sega logo for the front. if i can't do that I'll have an artistically competent friend paint it on by hand. I'm going to pull off the bottom sticker using a heat gun and replace it after paint and clear coat has cured. the other stickers will be put in place after paint before clear coat

now, for internals. this requires some cutting of the case. I'm going to install a gdemu. Ideally i want to attempt an odd placement that will allow the original disc drive to remain intact. a switch will be installed on the back to go back and forth between disc drive and gdemu.

I'll be using an extension cable to route the sd card reader to the front of the system and cut for a spring loaded sd card port. i will also be wiring in another slot like this on the opposite side. that slot will be hard wired into the serial port, allowing use of dreamshell without the large serial port adapter. this will leave the serial port in a functional state. now i can transfer saves from my vmu to the second sd card. That's the main reason i want to keep the laser, if i can't though then I'll abandon the second sd slot.

finally, vga/composite/s video out. I plan to use a 4 pole rotary switch for the video out, everything will be tied together in a way that the standard video out remains intact but will be turned off by switching. at this point I'm theorizing that i can leave both audio outs active at all times, which would be cool if i had an independent sound system. this would allow me to use tv speakers and the sound system in conjunction.

I'm considering throwing a headphone jack and volume pot on the front as a nod to the first gen genesis but it would ultimately be pointless and overkill, not to say this whole project isn't.

what do you guys think? Also, know anywhere i might be able to get those stickers?

New Dreamcast owner: the VMU I found at goodwill is faulty in that it beeps because lolbatteries and sometimes even seems to short out the controller, so naturally I need a new one.

Would you recommend I go with one of those sealed ones on ebay, or is there a third party memory unit that's better for one reason or another?

it's now circulating online that that's just a rumor and while some can't some can. I've owned 6 dreamcasts and all of them were the 1999 production. I didn't seek them out, i just have never even came across one that wasn't(as far as non special editions go). anything that isn't the first ruin is relatively much rarer, thus less likely to encounter. also, I've read all pal models can.

just a bit of information, the console won't play bootleg gd-roms natively. you need a mod or bootdisc. the rumor about no copy protection isn't exactly true. however, the dreamcast also natively plays mil-cds without copy protection. this is where the ability to play back ups come in. once this was realized people began messing around with the data, compressing, deleting, and rearranging it so that it will fit on a cdr, and they injected code that the dreamcast reads and it detects it as a mil-CD and begins to run it. there are still some games that require 99 minute cdrs, but most don't. the only consoles that won't play the self booting images are the ones that had the mil-CD code removed from the bios, which includes the hello kitty one.

I'd say get it, more than likely it'll work fine.

Well we all know that pretty much all the sega games that were on the Original xbox was Dreamcast titles in some way or another, then you got VF4 that was put on PS2,I do remember seeing somewhere that Red Faction (I believe it went to just the PS2) was made for DC but under a different name(can't remember) GTA3 was going to but since GTA3 didn't come out till 2001 the dreamcast was already on its death bed.Hell even Billy Hatcher on the Gamecube was for the DC because most smilebit games were made for DC but then put on XBOX GunValkyrie, which had a build running on the Dreamcast and Jet Set Radio 2 before it became the overhauled Jet Set Radio Future with the new Xbox focused engine)Even Puyo Puyo Fever was suppose to be DC only till it got put on everyone's console hell even they ported it to the DS and even the GBA.

The Dreamcast was ahead of its time and I think part of it being that ahead of time is what killed it.

I find the relationship between SoA and SoJ during the mid-to-late 90s to be incredibly fascinating. I knew about Yuji Naka refusing to share the NiGHTS source code with the SoA team developing Sonic Xtreme, but I never knew SoA wasn't given dev units for the Sega CD. Knowing all that, it's easy to understand how and why Sega failed. It seems they were the primary cause of their own demise.

Is there a decent write-up about the culture of Sega at that time and all the different conflicts that arose?

DVD playback possibly, but then again that was very expensive at the time and it probably would have hurt Sega a great deal financially.

Dreamcast's demise was the result of an accumulation of dumb business decisions, poor financial stability, lack of public trust, and the overwhelming hype of the PS2

Guy with the flaky VMU here: I was testing it one last time before I tried to peddle it to a local game shop for a small discount on a different one and I'll be damned if it wasn't working all of a sudden. I did a total memory format just in case the corrupt file on the VMU was the culprit (and I believe it was a corrupt file, it was a red X in a circle with a yellow background and had no information to go on besides a string of "@@@@@@@@@@@@@"), but now more than ever I am morbidly curious. What the hell is making it work intermittently?

I think the nights engine was suggested or even mandated at some point by soj for sonic xtreme. Early builds (the one with sonic on a wide grass level with a river) were running on the nights engine. I think later it didn't work well with sonic or they were finally taken away the engine as you say.

For a long time I was mad at the ps2 because I thought it and people buying that inferior console is what killed the dreamcast. I knew about sega fuck ups but once I found out that those fuck ups were a lot worse that what I thought. I realised then that it was actually sega themselves who killed the dc while she was still unborn. Still it hurts me how people bought the ps2 en masse while the dc was around.
At least sega went out of the hardware business with their heads held high and not like atari who got out after some cheap cash grabs with the jaguar.

2 DCs, 2 twin sticks. 2 copies of VOOT and a link cable. The only thing missing from my complete setup is 2 LCD panels for a self-contained mobile VOOT platform. But LCD screens at the time were rather expensive.

I rather liked that "Treamcast" china controller I found at a computer show. If you've ever played with a Neo Geo Pocket, then you'd appreciate the microswitch D-pad. Wonderful clicky noises.
