Love the knights. Everything about them feels so right. Nice sprite, good voice work, satisfying attack sounds...can't even put my finger on it, just love the little guys. Too bad that Ogre Magi outdo them, and that's in a game where factions were supposed to by symmetrical

If I went for favorite i.e. the most useful though, that's a hard choice. I guess Chariot Archers from the original AoE, Carriers from Starcraft, Prism Tanks from RA2 and Mud Men from an incredibly obscure Starcraft clone called Primitive Wars (Mud Men are a tier 2 unit for the demon faction who have permanent invisibility, in a game where very few units have truesight and the opponent would most assuredly not have them at the point where you can train Mud Men).

The only think I can remember off the top of my head is the Sacred Geometry feat from Pathfinder, that allows you to literally do equations at the table in order to empower your spells with math. But that's a tabletop game, not a video game, and not strategy, and doesn't have units...but I think it's nifty.

goths can be easily countered with siege, mass hand cannoners/Arbalest or champions. What make them dangerous is their zerg rush, but since they cant use stone walls their TC can be easily raided and with no resources goths are shit. Mangudai can counter any unit in the game, even siege onagers or paladins.

Seriously, the Mameluke is, argueably, the best UU of Age of Empires 2

There are really few counters for the mameluke

>Army of Briton Longbow archers and Pikemen
>Mass siege units, such onagers and bombard cannons
>Massive gunpodwer units with meatshild units; such janissares and Conquistadores
>Buildings, such as Castles and Towers; since the mamelukes also behaves like "Ships" (I have no idea why)

Mamelukes can rape the 80% of the things you throw at them
With the proper micro you can kill almost anything you want
Even teutonic knights are not a real counter; since the Mamelukes can attack and pull back; playing the "Cat and Mouse" game with them

The only Solid counter against the Sarracen mameluke; is the new brand 'The Forgotten' Italian unit, the Genovesse crossbowman

Those fuckers annihilate any cavalry on their way

Despite that, the Mamelukes are pretty OP.
The only problem, its their cost; each dead mameluke is a heavy burden for the Sarracen player.

mamelukes have higher attack than mangudais and bonus to rape cavalry, but their shorter range, no pierce armor (easy to kill with mass archers or onagers), higher cost and no counter to long range siege makes them very easily to kill with micro. But yes, they are the strongest ones with mongols. Also playing mongols gives you siege with 1.5x speed, so your mangudais are easier to cover to upcoming siege/archers/infantry.

The high HP of the mamelukes let them soak some damage; but they are still fragile and too precious to risk losing them.

I remenber my first time when I got rekt against a player that massed: Bombard cannons, hand cannoners, champions, pikemen and skirmishers against my mass Mamelukes

I killed most of his army, but my 70 mameluke army was reduced to a puny 10. And when I realized, I run out of gold; and I got bombard cannons knocking at my gates.

Then I realized, that massed Mamelukes are strong, but not strong enough; then I started to create a mixed army.

With a companions of Monks and Trebuchets to heal my army, and destroy the enemy towers and castles.

That combo pretty much rape everything; of course it still has issues, but that tactic prove being effective the 70% of the times.

The sarracens are really powerful, maybe too much. Yet, they are not unbeatable.


I also like the "Hit n Run" mongol tactic; I remenber the time I played against a Mongol player.

Making 'Deathballs' in SC is incredibly stupid; there are so many things that can easily destroy stacked, groupid units

Such as Storms, Reavers, Siege tanks, Irradiate, Psi-Storm, a Lurker offense, Plague.

If you were stupid enough to agroup your units against of one those strategies, you were fucked up.

Well, with the only exception of the Siege tank

I wouldn't say just lazy, it's like they tried to take it entirely in a different direction. You could say a lot of Blizzard games held similarities in their stories here and there, but after WoW, everything felt much, much closer to Warcraft in how they handled it.

For example (minor spoilers) SC2 introduces "The Dark Voice" and "The Prophecy" that says there will be a destined villain turned hero that saves the universe against an evil bent on its destruction. I felt like the first game mainly focused on the conflict of the races we had here and now and didn't try to paint the Zerg as some sort of "noble beasts" they're going for now, but rather as a cold, evolutionary force in the universe.

The first thing I tried, was the campaign, in the hardest difficulty.

1) No more voiced storytime before/after the mission; just a short text not explain shit about the campaign, nor the historical character, nor the civilization.

2) No voice actors, only texts. Coloured texts. Manually got to click the units in order to make the dialogue progress.

3) General Laziness. On the first mission of the Sforza campaign, the idiotic father of the main character tries to cross a river. You can see the shore, then blue tittles, and then the water. You see the father walking into the blue tittles ('Water') as some sort of mediaval, Italian jesus.
Then the current takes him, but there is no animation for the 'drowing' character; the unit stands completely still as he magically moves down the river, then disappears.
Laziness.

4) Re-used units; at the very first mission of the very first campaign, you could see roman 'Legionaries', that are re-used Age of Empires 1 Legionaries, but with a big, square shield, not the classic AoE 1 legionarie shield.
There is a colisseum, that IS EXACLY THE SAME AS THE ROMAN WONDER OF AoE 1.

That made me so fucking mad.

5) Moments of not mediaval seriousness

6) And im not sure if its a version or a update or a path; but the pathing is really, really fucking stupid; its even worse than the pathing of The conquerors.
You will see ALL your tradecarts, all 30 of them, conglomerated at one point, blocking eachother, and blocking the gate, getting to no where.
Also, some of your men will magically teleport 'Inside' the trees, leaving them stucked; if you dont bring a villager to chop down the tree, that unit is stucked there, forever and completely defendless.
Some of your units and villagers will take the Longest router to get a certain point.

5) New civilizations; the Incas, Indians, Italians, Slavs and Magyards.

As a Sarracen Player (sand nigger); before the Forgotten, in a only UU fight, the mamelukes were pretty OP; the Briton longbowmen barely hold back the mamelukes. The genovece crossbowman is an archer unit that got bonus damage against cavalry
And as a Spanish, gunpowder, trigger happy player, the 'mercenary' (Meaning that, if you have a Italian ally, and if got a castle at the imperial age; you can create them at your barracks) Condottieros, that got extra armor/damage against gunpowder units, such as Spanish Conquistadores, Turkish Janissares and Hand cannoners.

6) 'Cutscenes'. Sometimes in the campaigns you will have cinematic stages, where you just sit down and watch the 500+ men war; wich is pretty epic. (The max poblation is now 500, not 200; which can be silly and laggy, sometimes). I learned a long of things from this cutscenes.

7) 'Minor Historical Details'; if you know about a certain character (For example; Dracula) you can see minor details that are related with the Character story.

It's certainly shitty and very cheap, and the campaign was poorly designed so it's not surprising it didn't hook you up. But I still like it because I dunno. It has some sort of weird charm for me. Maybe because it's so obscure and playing it I'm discovering totally uncharted strategies. It's 100% not for everyone though. Objectively a crappy game.

There was even an expansion for it, called The Ranker I think. I literally just found out about it and it polishes up the graphics and probably the gameplay, but I'm trying to wrap my head around the changes because it was only released in Korea and in Korean.

Also I found the whole hunting and experience mechanic pretty neat.

Mass elite zealot mamelukes pretty much destroys any melee unit, including infantry.

I have beaten so easy Goth and Slav, infantry-mass players.

The heavy zeal camel can work as a meatshield, while the mameluke does the real damage; plus throwing some heavy cavalry archers to support the mamelukes.

And never forget to add a good amount of light cavalry/Husar to your army; you have no excuse to not do so.

The problem starts to show; when lots of strong archers (Such british longbowmen and Chinese Chu-No-Ku) enters in the battlefield; even more of gunpowder joins the combat

Hand cannoners, onagers, Bombard cannon and the Janissares pretty much damages the mamelukes. The conquistador does a decent damage, but it's countered since its also a cavalry unit.

So, in this expansion, the mamelukes quit being OP.

Thats good, it adds more flavour to the battle.

Firebats actually hit THREE times for every attack. For the basic firebat attack it goes something like 6,6,4 damage. In other words, armor is three times as effective against firebats (as it is twice as effective against units that hit twice that you listed).

Nuke deal 500 damage or 2/3 total damage, choosing which one would do more damage to the unit. For example, battlecruisers with 500 hp are hit by the first case, but their armor covered them for 3, so they stand with just 3HP. But a EMP'd Nexus (1500 total HP -> 750 building HP) is hitted by 1500*2/3 = 1000, so it's killed. Also it's normal damage, so it isn't reduced by unit size. Burrow units doesn't affect the damage, only thing does are recharging shields, matrix, or moving away from the center in "three damage rings" for 50% and 25% total nuke damage to that unit.

That double damage from those units is wrong as you said it. Zealot, for example, displays 16 damage per hit and +2 upgrade, but is actually 8*2 +1. The game is ever so slightly not retro but is a great classical RTS and is everything Age of Empires III should have been.

Pic related (Algerian Archer) is cheap as dirt and is trained instantaneously, allowing you to mass literally hundreds of them in the first opening minutes of the game. They are very weak individually, but outrange pikemen (the baseline unit every other faction masses) and outnumber them massively, and also murder buildings with their fire arrows. Seriously ridiculous in the early game.

Due to the huge numbers of units (I think it has been topped since but I haven't kept in touch with RTS) you never felt that a particular unit was overkill I think, and the best ones took forever to train, like the Obusier which would one shot buildings, or the XVIIIth C. Grenadier.

Then you had killer units that would suck if left unattented, like the Ribaldequin which would decimate hundreds of unarmored units but could be captured.

I've been playing Cossacks with some friends of mine over the last few weeks and it's great fun, but it certainly has overpowered units

>Archers and Tatars kill buildings faster than entire batteries of cannons and mortars, while being virtually free and instantly produced (Archers) or being as fast as any cavalry, easily riding through enemy defences and having the longest non-artillery range in the game (Tatars)

>Russian Spearmen are best in the game and completely slaughter European Pikemen in equal numbers, making Russia the undisputed master of no-peacetime, rushing games

>We had to ban Mercenary Sich Cossacks in our games because our matches would just boil down to who could mass more of them without running out of gold and causing a mutiny, they are the fastest unit in the game and are just too good in raiding towns

Etc. But no RTS game is perfectly balanced, and Cossacks is certainly one of the best RTS games ever made. I'm not even sure its unit count was ever topped in an RTS. Total War beats it but it's not a pure RTS. Controlling anything from hundreds to thousands of units like it ain't no thang after playing games like Starcraft where you can only select like 12 units at a time tops for years was really mindblowing.

Had Dark Dwarf Merchant, made my golems cheap and also had points in the skill that gave them more experience when trained.
So they started with a bunch of levels.

It kinda is. Basebuilding RTS is dead as dodos or point-and-clicks. Starcraft 2 and indie projects like 0 A.D. are exceptions that only prove the rule. Squad-based "tacticool" games like Dawn of War 2, Company of Heroes or Wargame have killed the basebuilding RTS, for better or for worse.
