"The maps should be more detailed" is one of the criticisms Push has been getting as of late, and while I'm open to a lot of criticism, the idea that simple maps are somehow inherently bad really makes me laugh.
Consider the detailed maps, Push10 and (the old) Push22, which were chock overflowing with prettiness and looked gorgeous as hell--unfortunately, gameplay-wise, they were utterly terrible to play on. More details simply meant that there were extra nooks and crannies for people to hide in, and hitbox detection errors because they can avoid the ground for a bit more. I felt really bad telling the authors that their work simply wasn't suitable, but the simple matter is that in this case, more detail actually works against the gameplay.

I can understand wanting a map to look visually distinct and not just be two textures and call it a day, which is a perfectly reasonable desire, but when you say

There's detail and then there's detail.

For instance most people would say both Hedrox and BTSX are very detailed, but most people would agree that those are two very different types of detail.

And those aren't just two ends of a spectrum either, there are many other ways to detail things.

I'll agree it's harder to interfere with gameplay when only using textures, but even for zillion sector stuff it's more about level layout than anything else. Either having the ultradetailed sectors that block movement off to the side, or just not having them block movement (like the blood fountain in pol.wad.)

Then also restricting player movement isn't necessarily bad if that's what the gameplay intention was; for instance having small pillars in a cramped room when there's an archie and pinkies.

Basically it all boils down to how the detail was added; with how it will affect gameplay taken into consideration while detailing, or with gameplay as an afterthought.

A guy took your regular Remington 870, then he attached a left-handed model 870 to the side of it (because a regular one ejects to the right, and would be blocked by the other gun otherwise).

Yeah, Running From Evil gets really old, really fast. I also kind of hate that same boring old brown sky as well.

If any of you ever make a single map .wad for Doom 2, please, PLEASE consider replacing the D_RUNNIN and SKY_1 with just anything else, it can be a track from later in Doom 2, it can be a track from Doom 1, it can be a TNT track, anything but D_RUNNIN, hell, steal a track from Duke Nukem 3D, the Sky can be changed likewise, these two few things do so much to change the atmosphere of a level and I think it's absolutely worth the little time it takes.

Welp, this is the only thing I have to show for a day or so's worth of work.

This fucker's name is "Abaddon", it has 1.3k hp and it's Melee attack is a Flame-thrower like spray. This, with it's main attack (A short-ranged projectile that explodes into 8 smaller fireballs) and the fact it can charge like the Satyr makes him a bastard both in the Edge version and in this version.

All of the weapon replacements save for maybe the chaingun replacement look pretty bad in Winter's Fury. I haven't picked up the bfg equivalent yet if there is one, I got to after the second boss and had to stop because it dropped to <10fps in an area where frost mancubus and archviles were being thrown at me. I especially dislike the bad SPAS-12 modelrip that replaces the regular shotgun.

I'd like you to think about what a hellish font looks like, picture it in your head.

Here is a quick review of web typography and the design aspects of using fonts in web pages.
Essentially you can divide fonts into two major categories - display fonts and text fonts. Using the correct type for its intended purpose is very important.

A display font is designed to work at a large size with a small amount of text. They are usually heavily styled fonts that are used for headings and titles.

A text font is designed to work at a small size for solid chunks of text (the main body copy). They are usually cleanly styled.

Check out the attached graphic that shows an example of both side by side.

In the example notice how the styling of the display font breaks down at small sizes and makes the text difficult to read and almost impossible to scan quickly.

The text font on the other hand is great in the body text but looks thin and "weak" as a heading. This effect is more apparent the larger the heading size.

Think about the value this hellish font would add, if it could even exist while being conducive to quick reading in a fast-paced FPS environment.

I woke up just a short bit ago and decided to go through my weapon mods looking for old resources to nick as placeholers for the sake of research, and I decided to share one old, old classic with all of you.

Right away you know you're up to a good time, as the titlescreen has been replaced with one of three/four randomized titlemaps, depicting a squadron of bright mspaint-colored marines fighting against the forces of hell. It's a very one-sided fight as A: These guys are OP as feck, B: The demons are all mook-tier, and C: The map only spawns them in one place and they don't do anything anyway.

Finally, check out these add-ons packed with the mod. They don't follow a good naming convention so three hours down the line you're not going to remember that reallight.wad and shadows.wad are supposed to be loaded with algunsR.wad.
They don't even do much, anyway. Just "realistic" lights and shadows.

She plays on the lowest difficulties and has a smirk-inducing way of maneuvering and fighting enemies: The concept of strafing is actually still hard for her to get used to, so most W3D bossfights she would just lure the big bad to the place with health powerups and back up into them while simply exchanging fire until one remains standing. Mind you, she did manage to clear all the episodes - albeit on easy - and achieve a pretty good secrets found ratio, so she has fun and doesn't need handholding which is all that really matters.

Shortcut which does this is included in the zip.

anonmom_makebright:
Set to true/1 to brighten sector lights at map start. Set to false/0 to not brighten sector lights. Needs map restart to take effect.

Set from 0-255 to brighten sector lights by this amount at map start. Needs anonmom_makebright set to true/1 and map restart to take effect.

Info on these CVars and how to enter CVars is logged in the console at every map start.

Where exactly can a shooter do anymore to make a new gameplay experience? I'm having difficulty finding the next step for the genre, because it seems that there aren't many things left on which to innovate. Given such a scope, I can't see where the genre can change these elements. 20 years of shooters have shown to me a very reserved genre, which has largely stayed to its roots. New weapon: Slot five, it silently fires mines that rip through enemies and stick to surfaces, deals a good deal of explosive damage over a large-ish radius. It shares ammo slots with the Grenade launcher (On single rocket-ammo spots) and The Slot VI+VII weapons (Cellpack slot)

New enemy: Dubbed the "Malbouge" it is the Fatso replacement and fires a dual-flame attack (both in single and double groups, as well as a 'nova' attack that can be ranged. Both do a ton of damage (even with +strifedamage and damage cut in half)

im trying to beat doom 2 on ultraviolence. any tips in general for doom? how to deal with certain enemies and how to properly use the guns if possible ( i know the minigun is deadly with just burst fire at long range ).

The thing came for £730 but I had to return it unfortunately because the screen was really low quality. The PS4 was only £350 and came bundled with GTA5 and TLOU... normally it goes for £350. You should be okay even without sr50, although it's a nice speed bonus on the few straight stretches. Focus on keeping to the shortest route under the correct sr40 angle. It may sound trivial, but both AconyX and Evocalvin spend a lot of precious time checking the terrain ahead in fear of enemy trouble, effectively zig-zaging around a straight line. You only need to circle around the BK horde, the rest shouldn't require too much course alteration. Don't even slow down for the second drop from the start area. If the path is already getting flooded by revs, just push through wiggling like an eel. Either you luck out, or you die cornered anyways. Getting monsters in the exit room is a bummer, not much you can do with that.

yeah, most of my trouble comes in three places:
- the second drop from the start area, either the spider mastermind blocks my path and i have to restart because there's no way through or i fall into the revenants and get AAAA'd to death
- the fucking exit room, any time i don't go for the BFG they're all clustered around the switch, i've just taken to going for the bfg every run now after getting the yellow key
- the run back to the end after grabbing the yellow key, every now and then one of my runs is ended because of a stray cyber rocket meant for the mastermind

You can try https://github.com/MasterOfWebM/WebM-Converter which is basically the same thing but it provides quality switch and a two-pass encoding. Also, keep size limit as 3 (I dunno if you changed it to 2 while encoding last webm).
As for brightness I have no fucking clue what to do with that shit except changing brightness itself in the game. Since you're using GZDoom you can change sector brightness in settings.

Hey /doom/, I found some screenshots of some levels I made circa 2004/5. The levels appear to be gone forever sadly, and they were part of a completely bullshit "gameplay mod" with new weapons and enemies; basically everything but the kitchen sink. I obviously never finished it and gave up, but these screenshots exist, and even now give me a little bit of ideas for architecture.
