Saturn Thread

Didn't see much in the catalog.

Never had one growing up. Started the collection back in high school (circa 2006) prices have gone up so much.

Pulled it out yesterday and taught my gf all about it. Just got me in a very Saturn mood. What are some other good things to pick up. I'd like another RPG or two, but some imports that don't need explanation would be good too

Here are Saturn games I really like. None of them are RPGs though, all fairly action-y.
>Bulk Slash (it's expensive-ish, but not too much so), it's pretty much 3D Ranger-X with waifus, pretty decent graphics and it requires absolutely no Japanese knowledge to play
>Taromaru (it's expensive as fuck though, and is a very acquired taste, but if you can get into it, it's fun as fuck, you're pretty much ninjas with the powers from the movie Scanners)
>Layer Section (it's a damn fine port of a damn fine game, impressive effects, each sprite is in 3D space even though it's all 2D, like a tame Super Scaler game)
>Virtual On (if you have someone to play it with, although the PS2 port is better)

Just reflash it. Most of the time the problem is that it craps up during the eeprom access and corrupts its own firmware.

Of course you lose all your saves and custom codes, but the cart will be usable again.

And that shit is why I hate the Action Replay and almost never use it; I put a region free bios in my machine and have it connected to a much more reliable official save cart. I think there are, like, three games I play that need some sort of ram cart anyway.

About how hard is the install for a modchip on Saturns? I don't have any way in hell that I'm going to afford the games I want to play. I do already have the action replay 4M cart so imports aren't a problem, but the games aren't exactly what I can afford.

Get a machine with region free bios + modchip, a backup memory cart, and perhaps a 4mb RAM expansion cart. For the backup cart, get a Japanese one, they are dirt cheap compared to overseas ones, and all peripherials are interchangeable (except mpeg cards but those are near useless). 4mb RAM expansion is only needed if you want to play good-but-not-THAT-perfect ports of CPS2 and Neogeo games.

If you want to just play games, any TV will do. You only need CRT if you get a boner from lightgun games (lightguns do not work on anything else) or you need a hipster levelup.

Action Replay eats shit, you have to go through menus to load games, you cannot save to it directly, instead you have to manually backup saves on its own clunky menu, and it is not uncommon for it to kill itself (killing all your saves). Regionfree bios + memory cart is superior.

>About how hard is the install for a modchip on Saturns?

Usually you have to solder 1 or 2 wires plus a jumper, it depends largely on the type of chip plus the Saturn.

Your discs have to be in totally godawful shape if they need resurfacing to be readable, I have a Saturn that can read a disc that has a crack through the entire inner ring (where the game data is). It is more likely that the laser is old or needs calibration.

Almost same situation.
This summer I found a Sega Saturn Model 1, and all related cables, a model one controller and a 3D controller.

No CRT, but the component cables are easy enough to find. Not worried about them.

I planned on burning the games to CDs because poorfag. Would this require a modchip? Would I need an Action Replay cart for imports even if burned? It seems like the swap trick for Model 1 Saturns only works if you have the original game and mod the system anyways.

It takes Rayforce's lock-on attack and fills the screen with it, locking onto enemies in the background and foreground. You can also switch between two types of lock-on fields per ship. (e.g. default ship has a half-spherical lock and a triangular radial lock, each can be aimed left/right, and are good for different situations) There's also rank, so if you like how Battle Garegga gets harder if you're greedy, you'd like this too. Finally, OST by Hitoshi Sakimoto. Would recommend playing at your friend's house next time. Some call it the poor man's Radiant Silvergun and I agree in a few positive ways. I love RSG, but the power-up system isn't for everyone. Souky has a more conventional power-up system, so you don't have to play perfectly like an autist every time just to do well and be able to hurt bosses. Meaning more fun for 2-player mode.

Definitely look in to NOON. I can't say that i've ever really seen it mentioned but It's a really neat sort of puzzle game that also has a 4-player versus mode. Killer soundtrack too.

So up until now I thought I could swing by with an unmodded Saturn because a lot of the games I've imported were pretty cheap but I noticed some games even when imported can go up to like 50 bucks so I'm considering modding the thing.

What do I use on a grey Japanese Saturn? Is it hard?

I try not to reply to this sort of thing anymore since it gives people some hope and the truth of the matter is I always end up procrastinating, but I'm the guy that made that list and I've been meaning to update it for a long long time. I already have a gigantic list of games to put in there, and I keep adding to it every day, but the list got so huge that I have to break it down into tiers in order for to be usable as a recommendation chart and not just an amorphous shitpile of games.
See pic related for the folder structure I have right now, Top to bottom Essential Tier, Middle Tier and Obscure Tier. The idea is that if you never played a saturn game the safest bet is to start with the essential tier, then move your way down. The Obscure tier contains games that are Japanese-only and/or text-heavy, so it would be hard for a non-moon folk to play them, while the Middle tier also contains Japanese games but they're not text-heavy and easy to get around even if you don't know moon.
That bottom yellow part though are just games that I'm still considering if they're worth making the cut, but considering how huge the list is right now it won't be likely, I still have to cut a lot of stuff out, I didn't want this to get so big, but it's so hard leaving all these good gaems out.
I'm probably not going to do this any sooner, but I just wanted to say, I'm working on it, and every recommendation in every thread I try to look the games up and consider them. I'm always watching.

I just wanted to thank you for creating that list, if you are indeed its original creator. It's what originally got me into the Saturn and introduced me to some incredible games, and I know this is true for many other people after it's been shared.

I actually really prefer the format used instead of tiers or separation by genre. Other systems really need a similar recommendation list.

What has a better library, the Saturn or the Genesis?

I like to own a physical collection and prefer action/arcade/rpg/horror. I don't really like imports or burned games that much but if its the best/only option thats fine

Saturn doe shave stuff like Layer Section, DoDonPachi and Sokyugurentai though...

Thank you man, that really means a lot to me, that's why I did it. Glad you actually found it helpful. Well, actually, I kind of did for myself, or to put it in better terms I didn't really do it, I just pasted it together.
A long long time ago in old old /v/ there used to be weekly saturn threads where people digged up its extensive library and recommend games to each other, and like most people there who had a saturn growing up, we had no idea the amount of hidden titles the system had that was completely forgotten and never made it to the west. So I thought those threads shouldn't go to waste and I started saving all of those recommendations, specially in a time where there were no 4chan archives.
So really I selfishly just did it to inform myself on a system that I thought at the time was subpar compared to its peers, but really glad I proved myself wrong.
Unfortunately with the success of this little project and seeing the image posted a lot, those Saturn threads kind of died off, and that's the sad part of the whole ordeal. But at least it remains as a testament as to how great those threads were.

Well, keep it up, saturnbro. Tough to break them down into just three tiers like that, might have to sub-categorize genre's as well. The top fighters almost need their own category in Mid, same with the shmups in Obscure... Although some really arent so "obscure" anymore, just pricey.

The ST-V games are notable as perfect saturn ports, maybe like to see those noted somehow as well.

Definitely keep sanshiro's recommendation for easy text-light jp games. Probably the most useful info for someone just getting into imports.

I was actually considering that for fighters and shmups specifically since they're so fucking much and they're hard to nail down in the other tiers since they're kinda niche genres to begin with now, but I'm too afraid the list becomes too convoluted. But definitely noted, will consider it.
