Previous thread: >>2064923

These threads are for the civil discussion of CRT displays (TVs and monitors) as used for retro video games and systems allowed by the board rules in the current sticky (>>1392415 ). Subtopics *directly* related to this main topic are welcome.

A few tips so we don't get our thread deleted and have better discussions:
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast), vidya only. Slight OT might be okay if strictly related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend.
>Have fun and enjoy glorious cathode displays

So many of my photos are taken over component, it's not even funny. Essentially anything PS1 related for one.

It all depends on the model. Older ones usually won't support it, and the BVMs with expansion cards might need a specific decoder card for it, but there are quite a number of PVMs that support YPbPr component video right on over the same connections as RGB.

>That's amazing, How much did that cost ya?
$50 + $40 shipped at the beginning of 2013.

>ah it's 480p that PVM's never support right?
Multiformat monitors like the L5 series and certain BVMs support anything from 240p/480i to 480p, 720p and even 1080i. They're not rare outright, but by no means common or the rule.

>Is that a VGA connector?
VGA has 15 pins, that only has 9; It's used for connecting a remote for controlling the monitor.

>Can it support the Dreamcasts VGA?
See above; It's not used for video signals. Also, VGA from the Dreamcast is 480p and as such wouldn't work on a 480i monitor like this anyway.

>All the CRT's with component seem to be double or triple the price of those with just composite/rgb/s-video
Really all depends on the model. Cheaper late model "budget" monitors would usually only have RGB if not just composite/s-video.

It's the multiformat models that get stupid in price.

You could hypothetically get an adapter and combine the L and R audio to feed into the PVM, but it'd still technically be mono. That picture is a bit old, I have everything piped to switchers and an amp now, fed to a pair of KG4s.

The mono speaker is pretty damn good, and gets decently loud without distortion, but you'd ultimately want a separate audio setup.

There's a couple of aspects to it.
At a distance, it makes low games look much less blocky. Unfortunately if you're using a big screen then the scanlines can become way too harsh and distracting.

To quote myself from the last thread "RGB from the N64, no amp, just the raw signal coming out of the VDC-NUS A run directly to the multi-out."

And from tumblr:
After confirming that the amp that I had originally put together for modding the SNES mini was indeed not working/fried/etc, and burning a few strands of hair, I decided it was too late to try to solder together the second amp and do things the “right way”. With that, we’ve come to this:

Wiring VDC-NUS A directly to the Multi Out.

After reading a nice bit about how weak the N64’s RGB out is and how it needs an amplifier unless you want an impossibly dark image, I decided to connect it up just for the hell of it with the intention of opening it back up to install the amp at a later date. I likely will still do so (assuming I don’t fry the second amp as well), but I have to say, I’m surprised by the results so far.

No the set is capable of 480i/480p/720p/1080i through component and doesn't upscale from what I observed (although 480i signals do get converted to 480p by the set).

The image processing I'm referring to is things like edge enhancement and such, methods used to make the video clearer/cleaner from what I can understand. This means that a 480p signal for example goes through these "enhancements" and adds delay my games.

I remember someone bypassing this enhancement processing on a different sony trinitron set but it was long ago and I can't seem to find where I read that anymore.

There's an option in the service menu called HDPO on some Wega XBR sets. Bypasses framebuffer entirely for 1080i and 480p signals.

If you're complaining about lag on a Wega, though, you're likely experiencing placebo. It's well under 1 frame.

Yeah, pretty much god tier, or right at the top of the next tier down. It is multiformat, as you suggest, and it will look great for anything 6th gen and backwards, and for the wii. It takes BKM cards for input, so make sure it has the inputs you need.

I would recommend something in Sony's FS100 line (namely the 27FS100).

- Very popular thus very common.
- Great quality, even composite looks nice due to its comb filtering (somewhat important since a lot of people starting out have been using composite and only have the composite cables their console came with).
- S-video for when you want better quality.
- Component video for if you want to check out RGB (using a transcoder).
- Also great for 6th gen consoles and Wii because of component video, as well as a 16:9 "squeeze" feature that makes widescreen content nice and sharp.

Depending on how dense the population in your area is you should be able to find one pretty easily. I see about one or two pop up on craigslist in my area (which isn't big enough to be considered a city) every month, if you live somewhere more urban you should have no problem.

bite the bullet and grab yourself a turbo duo. tg16 collecting is easily one of the most expensive consoles to collect for.

i have an original tg16 with cd accessory but hit a brick wall with the $200 super system card, just can't bring myself to buy it. turbo duo can do super cd games out of the box and is in the ballpark of $300+ so it's far cheaper than my route.

if you don't care about games like castlevania x rondo of blood then you can get a baseline unit without acessories and RF output only for $50 give or take.

I don't think it's possible, unless you cheat and use the TV output pins, or make some special cables with the SCART wirings + S-Video wirings, so an S-Video cable would stick out at the end of the SCART cable. Carrying S-Video on a SCART cable isn't even standard.

>> No.2089734

>>2089713
I'm sure you could hypothetically wire something up that would be able to pass both S-Video and RGB along a single SCART cable, but it would by no means be wired using the standard pinout on the SCART side. Probably have to cannibalize data lines or aspect control to fit it all with correct grounding.

Not entirely sure what you're saying here.

If you don't mind doing a custom cable, there shouldn't be anything stopping you from grabbing whatever signals you want from the Saturn's av out and wiring them up in a way that suits you. I was just going off of the premise of keeping it all on the SCART cable to be split by a breakout cable.

Might have to make use of the monitor's audio out to feed your capture card though.

It is possible to send both S-Video and RGB over the same SCART plug, but it is not a proper standard, so not all systems may work with it.

You'd also have to add at least one of the s-video pins to the reserved data pins (and have luma in place of composite) if you want both at the same time. This may have unknown effects on your TV.

Sound isn't an issue as I send the audio to my mixer which has a main out that goes to my speakers and a tape out which goes to what I'm capturing to. Currently my VCR.

I'll most likely just do Saturn to BNC. The idea of scart was so I could swap it with my other scart cables instead of having to unplug from the monitor itself.

Those spare pins are used for various different data transfer formats, which differ from set to set. If you are unlucky, it might be wired in some way on your set, which means sending video data through it might damage it to some degree.

Or it might not damage it at all.

The deal breaker however would be the fact that SCART needs a lot of in-cable EMI filtering, and those data pins don't have their own ground signal (so you would need to use two of them, and use luma in place of composite). That on its own means getting a custom cable, or one extremely expensive one that has each pin individually shielded. Otherwise if you don't, you'll get noisy audio, noisy picture, etc., and that would affect the s-video signal.

Simpler would be to just get a decent s-video cable, or break out the 10-pin mini-din to BNC (if you can properly solder to that small piece of shit connector, or even just put BNC outputs for each pin on the console itself.

I'd just opt for buying a normal s-video cable, but I don't have my systems barricaded in on some shelf with the back of them inaccessible. I know that this can be a problem for many people.

Alright /crt/ , I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I'm dying to get my hands on a CRT again, however I find myself constantly running into problems. I lack a car and license so driving long distances to pick one up is almost impossible nor do I have any friends who could help me with that. Even with that, I'm not finding the displays I want on Craigslist. There are very specific models I'm looking for like the KV-27FV310 or the NEC XM29 but no luck there. And I don't want any of those big-ass 30+ inch sets as I live with family and my room isn't big enough for that.

What places would you recommend finding TVs and pro monitors besides CL and Goodwills? I live in North Texas if helps.

Also, what models, consumer and professional, would you recommend besides the two I've listed? I'm looking specifically for something that can take 240p via component or a professional broadcast monitor 20" and up. I know about the BVMs but I couldn't find those either and even then the tiny size is a bit off-putting.

Hey /crt/,

My parents got a new TV for black Friday and called me to see if I wanted this old CRT. I already have a low-tier CRT from about a decade ago so I was intrigued. Here it is, a Philips 27MS4504/17 model, branded as a Magnavox.

I would normally just take it, but it's really, REALLY heavy and it would be a big task to take it if the TV isn't even that good. I like the amount of hookups though, it even has s-video so that's cool.

There are plenty of shitty vga to composite/s-vid converters out there. They can only output 480i and will likely introduce input lag as well. Ditto for video cards with composite/s-video output.

What you will want to do is have a TV with component and then get a quality RGB-Component transcoder. You can use the transcoder to turn the RGB (coming through VGA) to component and send it to the TV. You will also need the CRT emudrivers which requires a specific type of video card. The transcoder is expensive and also discontinued, so good luck finding it (here's a product page http://www.curtpalme.com/TC1600.shtm).).

This is the sad reality of using a computer with a CRT TV. It's expensive and generally more trouble than it's probably worth. I would recommend either using a monitor or PVM with your computer or getting a wii for your TV (assuming you want this setup in the first place for emulation)

For his purposes, a VSC 500 by itself with some BNC to RCA adapters would work just fine, and he wouldn't need a compatible video card with drivers as long as it has VGA output.

It would look best if you used 640x480 resolution, the original VGA standard, but the VSC 500 has the ability to downscale higher resolutions to 480i, maximum being 1920x1200. If the VSC is coupled with certain Extron RGB's, you can get 240p.

Now I'll just be worrying about the hours on my monitor while I run.

Made me think of something.
Many PS1 and N64 games aren't really 240p and have black bars. Would playing these games for hours burn in black bars? My rear projection has very serious burn in where the bars would be.

I don't imagine it would be an issue since once you get to the menus they often are either 240p or 480i and fill the whole screen.

A low hour CRT will have far less issues and will be less likely to develop issues than a CRT that has been used for several thousand hours. I believe the average life-expectancy for a CRT is 10000-20000 hours. Obviously a newer CRT is less likely to have been used a low than an older one. It also depends on how it was used - many people feel that they need to have their screen way too bright (or they use the Vivid picture mode on Sony TVs), and this wears out the tube. A CRT with higher hours but with proper brightness settings would probably be in better condition than one with lower hours with brightness turned up too much. This is also why you should be somewhat leery of industrial monitors, especially those used in broadcast, because they were likely left on for hours and hours at a time and may also have network logos burned into them.

To answer your question, a CRT that had never been used would likely be in pristine condition, since it was never powered on and thus never had any of its components wearing.

The picture tube(flat-screen) is also in good condition seems to be,no scratches all colors seem to be OK as far as I can tell, but I never used CRT's so I don't know what is good and what isn't

Is it possible to look at the inner components and circuitry to estimate how much use was present a lot or not ??

I know almost nothing about CRTs or anything, but this seemed to be the place to go to ask about mine.

It's old and only has composite (it's even monaural but that's not important) and I'm trying to find something to convert my VGA-output computer to it for emulation purposes.

All the adapter cables I've found have gotten universally abysmal one-star ratings with reviews that say they don't work.

If this isn't something I can ask about here then I apologize, but does anyone here use any composite-to-VGA cables for their CRTs that work well for them? Is there a better-but-more-indirect route to take for getting it hooked up well besides the obvious answer of finding a better CRT with S-Video?

Not good for emulation purposes. First of all you'd need to convert the signal which will introduce input lag. Then there's resolution and scaling issues you'd undoubtedly have to deal with. For something easy and straightforward, your best bet would be to emulate on a softmodded Wii.

The SCART input on his(and your) TV is likely not wired for S-Video and expecting composite on Pin 20, so it sees the Y portion of s-video on that line as just a black and white composite signal.

Bridging Pin 15 will get you the C portion of S-Video, thus a full color picture. While this works on a technical level, I'm not sure how smart of a solution it is or if there is some circuitry you should be using to combine the two.

The older KV-M1420D has the same tube as the KV-M1450D but the BE-2A chassis displays RGB crisp like a VGA monitor when the convergence is very good unlike the BE-4 chassis which is prone to display a noisy picture.

That has nothing to do with filters or resolution, that's the focus of the electron gun combined with the high phosphor density of the screen making it do that. On a properly adjusted screen, it's not a problem anyhow.

Why don't you go test it on a 15kHz monitor yourself? I don't have one capable of RGB nor do I have a way to connect it to my PC so I can only give shots of each resolution from a 31kHz monitor.

Comparing it on 2 different type screens would be pointless anyway, they would never look exactly the same even with the same exact resolution or scan rate.

>not that ugly black bar filter though

I don't know what you're talking about here. If you're talking about that black line interlacing shader, then that is meant for 480p only, and the result has zero difference from real 240p except for the brightness being halved, though black frame insertion on 240p 120hz also results in halved brightness, so it turns out exactly the same in most cases except when 480i is involved.
This would hold true even for 15kHz screens if they were capable of 480p, it would make it look the same as 240p except with 50% lower brightness. This just has to be done on 31kHz screens in order to have both native resolution and native refresh rate at the same time, and many screens can adjust contrasts, colors or brightness to compensate the brightness penalty so it ends up being a good solution.

Right is 320x240 with no scaling, left is 3840x240 with nearest scaling. Both resolutions are 120hz modes on the same monitor, with no filters or shaders. There is no visible difference between these two modes, except one will display any horizontal resolution correctly with scaling.

Here is is, a photo of my Sony KV-14M1B.

So much for your "can't see a difference", your pixels are too wide compared to my shot, and some colors are too dark because of these black bars.

While talking about these, they looks nowhere near the scanlines you could see on Kya and other's BVM shots.

Are you stupid or something? Your screen is completely different type, with a completely different phosphor layout and coarser phosphor pitch, of course it's going to look different. This is not what it's about, it's about having correct native resolution appearance without having to constantly change the external output resolution constantly.

If you compare 320x240 and 3840x240 with nearest scaling on that screen you're using, it will look the same, period.

Well that's just how that screen is, it is a higher quality tube than a TV so 240p mode has more defined scanlines. That has nothing to do with the horizontal resolution. I don't consider that a bad thing anyway as long as the brightness is sufficient to balance it out, which results in a very sharp image but with no blockiness like you get with line doubling.

Also, a PC monitor looks far better than most 15kHz screens I've ever seen at displaying 240p. Only a small percentage of 15kHz displays can match it in image quality, mostly PVM or BVM, and being 31kHz makes it far easier to get working with PCs.

What i was saying before you cowardly reported my other posts was that you'd have an improper resolution aspect if you did display the game on a 15kHz monitor, which is true. Then you came and declared that your 3840 pixel-wide thingy on a PC monitor looked exactly the same and that there was no difference and that if you didn't agree you were an autist. After showing you a proof that what you said wasn't true, you're now saying that it is, because you were talking about line-doubled 320*240 stuff and that if hypothetically someone found a way to display this resolution on a 15kHz monitor it will look the same. This isn't the point.
The point is that your thingy don't and will never look like a 320*240@60Hz video signal displayed on a 15kHz RGB monitor. Nice, you proved that your thingy look like a 320*240@120Hz picture with black frame insertion/black lines insertion. But it doesn't look like a console is supposed to output. It just look like this filter on PC-88/98 emulators that thousands of people are asking how to deactivate it because it's just ugly and butcher both the contrasts and brightness.
Now you'll call me an autist (again) or a 15kHz purist. Yeah, I own more PC monitors than TV/15kHz RGB monitors. I love the appearance of both line-doubled 320*240 DOS games and consoles on an RGB capable TV. But what you're doing is just ugly. just letting it be line-doubled would just look better (though still inferior to a TV).
Aside from that you have tons of problems with emulators that you don't get with real hardware. Don't tell me they don't exist, I use both.

>>2110679
>Well that's just how that screen is, it is a higher quality tube than a TV so 240p mode has more defined scanlines.
Not it's not. It's just huge thick pixel lines. Scanlines' thickness is mostly variable, and depend on the brightness of the surrounding pixels.

>> No.2110782

>>2110721
>but the simple sharpness and resolution of the screen make it look like you tossed the most basic of scanline filters on it and called it a day.

That's not how it looks at all. It would look like that if you displayed it 960p with every two scanlines blacked out, but not when displaying real 240p or displaying 480p with every other line blanked, because those are displaying 240 natural scanlines either way, while the former would have both the lit and dark lines doubled, making them look blocky,

I don't think the people who "look down" on 31kHz PC monitors have actually tried using them that way and just dismiss it out of hand because it isn't "muh authentic 15kHz", or "muh authentic blurry scanlines" or "muh authentic real hardware" or some other dumb shit. >What i was saying before you cowardly reported my other posts was that you'd have an improper resolution aspect if you did display the game on a 15kHz monitor, which is true.

I didn't report jack shit, fuckface. There is no aspect ratio difference, you CRT displays any horizontal resolution the same no matter what, this is how consoles like PlayStation work.

You obviously don't "get" resolutions. There IS NO FUCKING DIFFERENCE when you use 320x240 60Hz or if you use 3840x240 60Hz with emulator stretched to fit, your CRT WILL DISPLAY BOTH 4:3 REGARDLESS. This has nothing to do with scan rate or scanlines or anything like that, so stop fucking bringing that up, you can go do this on your precious fucking 15kHz screen the same way and the results will be the same.

You obviously don't understand any of this judging by how you bringing up 15kHz or scanline width (or how you keep calling it "thingy", makes you sound like you haven't bothered to see how it works), this has nothing to do with horizontal resolution. You seem to be fixated on how my monitor "just looks like a filter" and is therefore inherently bad, but that has nothing to do with 320x240 vs 3840x240.

Again, this has nothing to do with scanlines or scan rate, this is about having the native resolution on any CRT screen, regardless if it's 15kHz or 31kHz or whatever, without having to switch modes for different games (or in the middle of the game even).

God damn, you're fucking retarded.

> It just look like this filter on PC-88/98 emulators that thousands of people are asking how to deactivate it because it's just ugly and butcher both the contrasts and brightness.

No, it doesn't look like that with real 240p. The light is entirely focused in the lit lines so there is no loss of brightness or contrast. If you use black lines or black frames then yes it will do that but a good monitor will let you compensate.

I fiddled with it a tiny bit some months back, don't think I made much headway on it and didn't see the point in continuing. If I'm emulating on PC, it's usually something turn-based, windowed and off to the side of my LCD since my PC CRT is getting to the point where the contrast on it is just fucked. If it's even somewhat dark, you can't see shit.

>"muh authentic real hardware"
I couldn't care less about whether people are emulating or using actual hardware in most cases. As long as they're playing for their own enjoyment and not just for the validation of others, what's the big deal?
There's that, and the fact that I have no room to look down on anyone for emulation when I have more photos of stuff being emulated than I do for original hardware.
Like I said before, play the games however you want, it just looks a bit off to me when you get in close.
I'd also like the clarify, I'm not commenting on anything having to do with whether you're displaying at 320px or 3840px, just the scanline gap.

Stay away from the anode cap. Be sure to read every label for any pot you wish to turn. It isn't too hard. Though mine was a 20" which gave me much more room to work. Never reach around the monitor. Setup a mirror in front and always make adjustments from the back,

My experiment on my 1910 went very well. I recorded it but never got around to uploading it for anyone who needed some kind of reference.

Before cracking it open and messing around with dials all willy nilly, try out all your consoles on the TV first. Especially if you intend to use RGB but don't have the cables yet (and are currently using Composite or S-Video). The screen can shift based on the type of input (Composite, S-Video, or RGB) and between each console. That overscan looks pretty normal to me, and you'll find that if you set it perfectly on one console, it'll be shifted over on another. It's a losing battle and one generally not worth the headache.

I'm and idiot and messed around with random knobs after tuning the main horizontal convergence and focus knobs (Pretty much the only shit you should touch) and messed up the convergence on all the corners. It's been a year and I still can't figure out how to get it back to it's normal settings.

I've opened up six or so CRTs so far, never been zapped once. I'm not worried, but don't be foolish, make sure you know what not to touch.

Careful with really cheap ones. A lot of them pass the composite video signal through both pins of the S-Video plug. That's what produces the chequerboarding, i believe.

I built my own PAL N64 S-Video cable from two genuine Nintenedo AV cables.

I've also built PS cables and Wii cables from el-cheapo ebay ones. Those will normally come with a fully-populated plug. Put it sideways on a hard surface and hit it with a mallet, gently at first but with increasing force, until it splits open. Then you can de-solder and use the plug.

They normally come without coax, simply using multi-core wire cos it's cheaper. That can be swapped easily. I spent $10 at a tip shop/junk shop and got like 5 AV cables to cut up and use.

I bought a 14" PVM recently, and i'm a little disappointed by it. The resolution is nice, and the RGB cables i've built work fine, but the colours and (low) brightness are awful.

If I use S-Video i can turn the chroma dial up, which helps a little bit, but there's nothing like that for RGB or component, is there? (Would removing the 200uF capacitors in the RGB lines for a PSOne make things brighter? Would changing the termination or grounding resistance do anything?)

It's also dim as fuck without both brightness and contrast somewhere near max. And at max, the brightness just washes things out, everything starts to go white without resolving any more detail.

The set has been heavily used, no doubt, and it was cheap, but is there any way to make it brighter and more colourful? I realise it's probably just worn out, which is a real shame.

>Would changing the termination or grounding resistance do anything
If you're talking about on the PVM side of things, if you don't terminate the video out(assuming they're not auto terminated) it will be brighter, but it also seems to wash everything out at the same time.
Someone with the right equipment and a significant amount of knowledge could possibly be able to rejuvenate the tube, but I wouldn't even know where to start, and I believe that would only work for the gun(s); This sounds more like the phosphors have just seen their better days and are on their way out.
Then again, my knowledge on the heavily technical side of these things is limited, so there may be something you could do to alleviate the problem to some extent. Perhaps it could use a recap, I honestly don't know.

Started a new thread myself since this one hit the bump limit coincidentally with Squarepusher once again being here calling us retards.

LOL, it was the auto-termination! I jacked some empty BNC-RCA adapters into the back, to open the auto-termination, and wowsa! Picture is now amazing.

Something to keep in mind. This was with both PSOne and Wii using RGB and RGB/Component respectively. I had NOT added extra resistors in line, either. The PS RGB cable is homemade, and does use the 220uF caps on each line.

Good to hear it's all working.

I am relieved, yes. Turned out to be a simple fix, and i'm surprised by that.

I modded a PAL N64 recently, to output S-Video cleanly so it could just use a standard S-video cable and didn't need a special one. I did it using potentiometers to ground, so i could adjust the resistance, but short of reducing it to 0, where the screen went black, nothing much changed on my other CRT. Which is 480p, so might be the processing I guess. Will have to play around.

Really? I need to try this. You put some adapters on the loop-through connections (rgb out) and it boosted the signal?
