What emulators are you using?

>> No.2078204

i don't because i don't break the law

>> No.2078205

FCEUX

>> No.2078210

>>2078204
It's not illegal to use emulators.

It's illegal to download ROMs for games you don't own and/or don't erase after 24 hours.

Also if it's a licensed game, or the company went bankrupt, there is likely nobody that actually owns the intellectual property... so those are in a legal grey area.

Not the guy you are replying to,but did you know the BIOs for emulators are illegal?

I know to get a PSone emulator working, you need BIOs. I'm not sure about the laws for cartridge based consoles. Does anyone know?

I was under the impression that it was legal, hell there is even emulators you had to pay for...

You can even download emulators on iPhones and Android...

Just with a disclaimer that says to not download an official ROM.

Emulation is legal. Reimplementing a BIOS is legal as well. Dumping your own BIOS is also legal. So is HLE that bypasses it altogether.

Only distributing copyrighted code without permission is illegal.

If you have your own copy of the BIOS (I.e. an actual console) then you can back that BIOS up to your PC and use it legally for emulation, assuming you have the tools to do so. Sharing the BIOS on the internet is the illegal part.

Regardless of whether you already have a copy or not, making a new copy without permission is copyright infringement. If you already own a copy, there's an exception under fair use for making a personal backup of it. Downloading someone else's backup does not count.

"Oh, I don't DO 'emulation' or the ROM thing, it's ILLEGAL!"

"Downloading games!? That's STEALING! Thief!!!!"

*shakes fist* "Dirty pirate scuuuuum!!!!"

Who gives a fuck? Only greedy Jew software developers and their greedy Jew publisher overlords who have somehow got it stuck in their greedy Jew heads that not only is copyright infringement legally equivalent to theft (it isn't, you stupid fucking asshats) but that it is totally-probablly-super reasonable to continue to get paid for the same work indefinitely (or for a healthy 75+ years, at which point it's actually MORE intellectually dishonest not to just drop the pretense and say it's indefinite). Fuck, I'd loooove to live in a world were your mechanic can continue charging you for the same service (say, an oil change) decades after the fact, and see people try to defend that.

Oh, and one more thing: quit calling it software "piracy". And people who commit software copyright infringement "pirates". It REEKS of western "First World Problems". You want to see pirates? Go to any fucking coastal waters in Africa. You'll find the genuine article. Ponder just how pants-shittingly terrifying the real deal is when you're floating face-down in the ocean water with half your guts already hanging out and being nibbled by the fishes while you aspirate on a mixture of blood and saltwater.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming....

I quite like mine. So far it's worked with everything I've thrown at it. It even works well with modern games. It appealed to me because it's a good fit for 8-bit/16-bit games and with the analogs it works for 5th gen gaming too. Plus, it's got a full set of shoulder buttons for emulating games beyond 5th gen and modern games.

I am a fan of how it works. The D-pad is awesome.

I had some compatibility issues at first with my Mac, but that's just because they don't support Xinput. Which, truthfully, there is quite a bit of software out there that doesn't support it either, but there's a handy little switch on the back to change it to the more compatible DirectInput.

Snowball is an old IF adventure game by Level 9 Computing that was ported to many home computer systems in the early 80's. Earlier versions were just plain text, and later revisions added graphics. Not really, documentation is pretty bad but you can get up to speed fast enough.

Here's some code as an example of how simple most of it is.
This is for Aria of Sorrow, I used it to teach myself how to do it since it's a fairly simple game for this sort of thing.

function drawMana()
memory.usememorydomain("BUS"); -- reads from the memory bus
mana = memory.read_s16_le(0x201327C); -- reads in your current mana
maxMana = memory.read_s16_le(0x2013280); -- your max
percMana = (mana/maxMana); -- works out what fraction you have left
gui.drawRectangle(0,24,55,12,0xFF000000,0xFF111144); -- draws a box
gui.drawRectangle(0,24,55*percMana,12,0xFF000000,0xFF333399); -- Overlays another box that acts as a filled in mana bar.
gui.drawText(-2,23,mana.."/"..maxMana); -- writes your mana amount in text on top of it
end

Then I did the same for some other things, wrote a script to let you change weapons and souls without pausing using the controller's analogue sticks to toggle through them and switched off the background layer used to draw the UI, made it so holding a button showed the UI.

Only reason I had left to pause was to swap armour or check my map.

Made for a fun learning experience and I enjoy playing it this new way even more than originally!

Figured I'd share my thoughts here instead of starting a new thread.
I have a phat PS2 with a HDD. I burned an image onto it which gave me all the good programs. OPL, ESR, ULaunchELF, etc.

Now I want to try installing a SNES emulator to the HDD and play ROMs off a USB flash drive. How can I do that? Could I even save to the HDD? Forgive my ignorance.

>>2099365
Or play the roms off the HDD itself?

What's the average price for a decent fight stick? I was thinking of searching for one due to sales today and wanted to know how yours is and the price you paid so I know what to expect.

All on my android phone:

>N64oid with Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Megaman Legends
>DraStic DS emulator with a shitload of games
>GBC emulator, also shitload of games
>GBA emulator, shitload of games

on my tablet I have a SNES emulator with like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger and a bit of games.

Bus rides + being stoned + phone emulators = good times yo

uLaunchELF can run PS2 ELF homebrew from just about anywhere you point it, so you can stick SnesStation either on your USB stick or your Hard Drive and run your games from/save to either the same stick or the hard drive.

I've never tried using an emulator on the PS2 so I wouldn't expect much. A Wii would probably be better.

I actually got SNES Station up and running on my HDD earlier.

It's still asking for a memory card, so I don't know how to save. Could I ask for help one more time?

It's hard to get a decent signal out of it for a CRT and it's fairly underpowered.
On the other hand, it's cheap as dirt and this is the kind of tinkering the Pi is made for.

Really, I can attest to this. I have an Xperia Play with a 64GB microSD card installed in it. I can play any console and arcade game made from 1980 to circa 2003 on it, with still a few gigs to spare for music and tv shows. Retro games take up not that much damn space.

The power usage (as in, wattage) is no problem. The Pi is actually pretty efficient in that regard. It's the computing power that's the issue. I wouldn't expect much more than SNES emulation from it personally, but I've never used it for that.
As for getting it to work, it's fairly simple in most cases. Typically you just need to put the software on the SD card, plug in the power and any necessary peripherals and you're good to go.

Pretty much just RetroArch these days, mostly because it's the most CRT monitor-friendly emulator I've ever used, at least for the purposes of playing at 240p. Also, DRC and lots of measures for reducing input lag.

The difference between Snes9x and bsnes comes down to a handful of games, and some very minute timing differences.

If you can run bsnes at full speed, by all means do it, but Snes9x is a more than worthy alternative for the vast majority of games, and is actually superior if you're into fast-forwarding given it is a ton faster.

>>2106226
I don't think you can configure the filter on Snes9x, at least on Windows. All you can do is switch between the presets, from RF to RGB.

I know older versions of bsnes (from 0.70 down) also had the NTSC filter, and let you configure it. I know for sure BZSNES (byuu's April Fool's version of bsnes) for sure does.

>>2106253
I managed to find it in the GUI version. Except I can't get it to choose a good fullscreen resolution to match my, admittedly very old, 1024x768 laptop screen. ZSNES 512x448 fullscreen gets perfect scanlines together with the NTSC filter.
