I actually watched them play the rest of TRAG instead of playing it on my own. I played it before they did the videos, but the game fell off hard and got hella boring, so I stopped playing. Then they RP'd it and the rest is history.

Galerians, on the other hand, I haven't watched at all because I intend to go back to that game. I actually found it fun.

It's not even funny. I find them annoying at times. They'll riff on things that aren't actually bad at all. Like the mask the guy wears in Clock Tower 2. But it makes watching these, at times very slow kinda boring games more watchable. I'm mostly curious what these old games were like but don't want to actually play them. It's more for gaming history.

Like I saw Clock Tower 2 in the store for years but never bought it. So now I know what the hell it actually was.

I sometimes buy games on the pure hype even if I know I probably won't like it.

I enjoy the occasional lets play or twitch stream.

I think the Sega Dreamcast is a garbage console mainly due to bad experiences as a kid.

I generally think Sega is worse then Nintendo because the 2 kids who had Genesis' in my school were massive faggots. While everyone with a SNES was pretty cool.

I don't think I've gave enough of a shit to finish Megaman 1-7 and usually give up at the Wily stages.

I think AVGN and guys like him were the worst thing to happen to the hobby. Now we have a generation of kids who never played this games growing up and buying NES games because its a lelfunnymeme. Twitch is also a big offender of this.

I wanted to get into making Let's Plays and Streaming on Twitch but I feel like its too late now and its not worth my time or effort to push to get popular so I can make less then I will if I just finish my degree and start making software.

Bad experiences are a justification though, you can't help that.

This only happened to me with one game ever, and that game was Legend of Zelda: ALttP.

I don't know what it is but I just can't bring myself to give a fuck about this game, and I absolutely loved Link's Awakening, which I played before it.

I didn't own LttP as a kid but my friend did. I never asked to borrow it from him.

I've tried to play through LttP like three times in my life. Once when I was 18 during uni. Dropped it early. My friend played through it though and I'd watch sometimes.

Next I was like 23 or something doing my masters degree. Again I dropped it.

Then I was like fucking 25 and bothered to go all the way to dungeon 7. I dropped it.

I will never play through ALttP. I don't know why I don't care for it. I think one of the main things is I don't like the aesthetic look of the game and nor do I like its repetitive soundtrack. I'm just not drawn into its world at all.

I repeat that I loved Link's Awakening (one of my all time favourites), loved OoT but I don't care for ALttP. I don't care for Majora's Mask either. Tried to play through that two or three times as well but could not be fucked.

I'm going to take this further by saying I don't understand fags that keep playing rehashed Zelda games. How can you play more than four of them at the very most? Played one 2D Zelda you've played 'em all, played one 3D Zelda you've played 'em all. Zelda 2 is the only one that's actually different. Apart from that they're all the same shite.

The worst is that I own games I haven't even played. I think setting specific, set in stone cut-off dates and that sort of thing really just winds up creating loop-holes and other business. Instead, we simply need to allow/disallow certain games around the cut-off limit.

For instance, Halo came out in 2000 I believe, but it's obviously not retro. Deus Ex came out around the same time, but you could consider it retro. Then, there's the issue of ROM hacks, which are sometimes so complex as to be thought of as another game in their own right, and they're certainly made past the cut-off date. And what about mods made for PC games before 2000? Should things like Natural Selection for Half-Life, DOOM's endless .wads, and other related things be allowed? Emulation, is that retro?

Retro doesn't even have a concrete definition of what it is, since the definition changes per person. All we can do is attempt to best promote the discussion of old games that simply are not popular enough to get posts on /v/ by chipping off a small chunk of the video game board in hopes of allowing discussion before a quick 404 (Since the average thread with 404 on /v/ in 15 minutes.).

That's the heart of the issue at hand. /v/ was simply too large and too fast with too broad of topic to be able to be supported in its current format.

Honestly, what's keeping /vr/ good for me, is that we can't really talk about current events, so the board moves slowly enough to allow NES/SNES threads to exist. My favourite /vr/ thread of all time, an Umihara Kawase thread, last over a month, for instance.

More important defining what games are retro, is just preserving an environment where retro games can be discussed.

As a side note, Halo 1 was released in 2001.

I only got into retro gaming because I'm a poorfag who can't afford a good graphics card, I can't stand console controls for fps games and classic games have minimal if any DRM.

I think the Japanese are an entirely incompetent species of human beings in regards to programming, level/game design and story production.

I believe john carmack was more influential on gaming than gunpei yokoi...or anyone other than maybe Gary gygax.

I don't even play video games that much.
The oldest console I have is an N64, and a Gameboy that needs repairs.
I mostly watch for Gameboy threads,
I would actually get some games if I had money, and I'd love to get one of those 50 Classic Arcade Game cabinets, even if I'd mostly play Galaxian.

But I believe my greatest sin is that it took me 3 years to beat the first level of LoZ: Link's Awakening. After that I just rolled through it, but Tail Cave stumped me, never having played a Zelda game before.

Backstory: Pharmaceutical company Umbrella has a lab in the mountains. Their virus gets out, which causes mutations and zombies. Police go to investigate. It then takes over the town in a separate outbreak.

Jill, the police officer who previously investigated the mansion has to get out of the zombie city. Umbrella has sent a mutated soldier, named Nemesis to kill her and the rest of the police who know about their misdeeds. She meets mercenaries from Umbrella, one named Carlos. They escape. The story isn't too complex.

When I was recently graduated from college and unemployed I used to play a lot of Fallout 2.

Since this game is playable with mouse only (except when fixing prices on barter mode) It was very easy for me to keep my hand in my pants (becase i'm a man) and keep playing like nobody's business.

Until I started getting horny, quit the game, and browse porn.

>Lowball the absolute shit out of people
This has gotten me a lot of games, mainly a shitload of decent SNES games, NES games, and their consoles/controllers for about 30 bucks because some guy just wanted it gone, I've also got a lot of collectors collections for cheap because they were pressured to move the whole thing because they were moving/got married or whatever for pennies on the dollar.

>I try to sell on both craigslist and eBay
>I never give partial refunds on eBay. You can mail me my shit back if you don't like it for refund of item cost only, enjoy wasting my time and losing 2 way shipping

>I've printed reproduction labels for a lot of games and scuffed them up slightly to look realistically worn and sold them for a lot of profit.

I've made Hagane, Firemen, Wildguns, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, EVO, Megaman 7, Megaman X3, and some other more expensive games like Dragon View and Sunset riders for him. I only charge about ~30 if you supply donor carts and pick up at my place and are buying in bulk.

He's an idiot, but one I'd rather not live without. Shit taste for stuff like videogames and anime is something I can put up with and even then he's not too picky when it comes to co-op stuff.

Okay, time for my actual sins.

I'm not too big on the Super Nintendo; I prefer my PC Engine Duo and Genesis. There's games on it I love, like Famicom Detective Club Part 2 and Teraanigma, but I just haven't gotten around to playing a lot of its library yet.

I highly prefer Metroid 2 to Super Metroid. I don't know why.

I actually like Kouldelka and don't understand why it's so hated around here.

I don't use save states (mostly out of just forgetting they are there and because mapping them to a controller is awkward), but I don't feel a need to get angry at someone for using them since it doesn't affect me. This seems to be wrong.

Super Mario Land is my favorite Mario title.

I adore Ocarina of Time, beaten it nine times, but it isn't even my favorite N64 title.

I have a hard time really getting into any 3D Final Fantasy title.

I never liked zombies, and thus Resident Evil has never been of much interested to me despite loving many other survival horror games. However, I respect that it codified a subgenre.

I don't think four face buttons are objectively better than six and don't think that more shoulder buttons makes a controller automatically better. As long as the controller is responsible, durable, comfortable in your hands, stuff like that doesn't matter. The games on a console are made to work well for the control lay out of that console.

I don't think Parasite Eve 2 is better than the first one; they're two drastically different types of games.

I savestate all the time when playing platformers/action, even if it's babbymode games like Mario Land 2 or games where I know all the levels by heart and could ace them easily if I could be arsed. It's just become somewhat of a twitch reflex by now and I don't think there's anything wrong with it. You play singleplayer video games to relax and have fun, not to compete with someone. I randomly go to various gamestops with boxes full of rare games (ps1/N64/Snes) and ask for a price quote. Since I know they don't take them, I walk away disappointed and secretly laugh as their employees squirm in anger on missing on the holy grail video game lot score.
I know I'm the worst.

1) I think Batman on NES has the best ending for an NES game. You go through this tough-but-fair game, and then Batman tells the Joker to GTFO and tosses him to his death. Satisfying.

2) My favorite Genesis game is NOT a sonic game, Strider, or one of the many RPGs available for it. The game is Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The movie.

Like a few ppl who already posted, I can't beat SMB without savestates. I can generally get to 8-3 without dying but it's full of hammer brothers and I never get there powered up.
I hate how SNES games sound compared to the other systems of its generation, although I agree it was a good system with a worthwhile library.
I think Donkey Kong Country and other prerendered 16 bit games look terrible.
I feel bad for gamers who had an N64 instead of a PSX or Saturn, and I am sick of them trying to convince me it was a good system in any way. I think N64 fanboys are just blinded by nostalgia.
I love shoot em ups, but I suck at them and can only beat most of them on easy mode.
I use scanline filters when I emulate.
I think LJN made some decent games. I like Jaws and Maximum Carnage even though they are pretty repetitive.

I don't think that's a sin, I think it's a nice thing to do if you didn't enjoy the game and I just hope the buyer wasn't a reseller.

- I've never beaten a Castlevania game and still consider it one of my favorite retro vidya series because of what I have played, it's just that I'm bent on playing the games on the original console and haven't been able to afford physical copies of them lately. I'm about 3/4th through Castlevania 2 now, at least.

- I never beat Final Fantasy VII, even though I have an interest in doing so. I got near the end of Disk 1 before and lost my save file, so I never wanted to really go back to it since then.

- I never beat Super Mario Bros 3 and have attempted to do so many times, but I always lose heart near the end.

- Not entirely /vr/, but I actually really enjoy JonTron's videos and he seems like someone that would be cool to hang out with.

FUCK ME I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS

Brave Fencer Musashi, for example. One of my favorite childhood games that I could NEVER COMPLETE. I've owned it on three separate occasions and there was always some bullshit making my save file go kaput.
