From the base of the old fucks who were bitching on BBSes and USENET back when Quake hit, the problems are as follows:

1) We were promised Doom 3, it didn't happen.
2) Too much ammo making the game too easy.
3) You telefrag the end boss. This was considered stupid and a cop-out. Getting telefragged in a DM in Doom was considered the most embarrassing of deaths (like going full spaghetti on a girl you like at the gamestop).

Those were the reasons. Tensions have cooled over the years and most Doom fans rather like the later Quakes (2, 3A). If you meet one who still is having issue, those are the reasons. I'm not vehement about it, but I never really enjoy the Quake games.

people I've talked to hated the game because they thought it was slow and because the texture palette was mostly brown, it was too hard for them and the enemies were annoying for them.

I don't like Quake because it looks terrible (and I don't mean technically speaking), the enemies, their placement and and even the level design at times are designed to piss the player off, the weapons are un-fun.

Even the musics are terrible. Only HALF of the first music is good. This comes from someone who puts Nine Inch Nails as one of their 2 favourite bands of all times. Honestly, the soundtrack is just Trent Reznor recording himself randomly press keyboard keys while high on heroine. It's obvious there was no thought or work put into the soundtrack, he just sold this shit on his name alone, for a quick big buck. While meanwhile in the mid 90's he composed his best work ever...
Check 'Ghost I-IV' if you want to the same kind of music he did in Quake but done right, with actual soul and work put into it.

The only interesting thing about Quake 1 is the level design. Full conceptual Doom-like level design except taking advantage of the full 3D, not many games are like that. Too bad it's all right by the terrible gameplay.

P.S: I love Doom but I'm not a 'Doom fan'

I've never met a die hard Doom fan complain about Quake being too difficult. Having crappy level design maybe, but not too difficult. Always was the opposite. Too many health packs, too much ammo.

But that's not to say you and are are talking about the same group of people. You may be were talking to groups of people half my age and the ages of the people I hung around with. I wouldn't know.

I do remember something about the complaining of it being too drab and brown though now that you mention it.

Enemies are too bullet spongy, music is boring, color pallete is too fucking brown, enemies are annoying and not really responsive to damage, the guns sound like shit.

Guess what they did in 1998 when Unreal and Half-Life came out? The Doom fan population still hasn't recovered from the massive wave of suicides. Two of them were so angry and confused they killed a bunch of people at their high school before killing themselves.

Doom fans hated both with a fiery passion because of:

Unreal
>Extremely tough, bullet spongy enemies
>Abundance of healing items and powerups
>Extremely agile enemies that dodge and play dead
>Skaarj Troopers use the same guns as you and can 1 hit you
>Large and confusing maps
>Puzzles to solve instead of collecting keys
>Weapons have alt fire and too many functions
>Friendly aliens that won't help you if you shoot them
>Sniper rifle makes the game easy once you get it

and Half-Life:

>Blast Pit boss has to be killed by solving a long puzzle to ignite a rocket
>Grunts are much scarier than Doom's zombies and much more accurate

On the first one, my money would be on the Titan because the rock throwing is just fucking insane. The Titan throws rocks ahead of you, unlike the cyberdemon who only shoots at you. Plus, the rocks are always an instant kill. One of the titans is much stronger than the others IIRC. The last three enemies wouldn't stand a chance, especially the shambler and tank commander (you should have said tank boss instead). On the second list, I would have a hard time since all are formidable. The Nihilanth teleports you to other dimensions, the Queen teleports and uses a shield, the Spider has a hitscan chaingun with an insane rate of fire, and the Makron is rocking a BFG, machine gun, hyper blaster, and railgun all at once inside a mechanical battle suit. Four way tie.

Well I know that Shamblers have damage resistance to rockets/explosives so at the very least it's got the edge over the cyberdemon.

Spider Mastermind is even weaker than the cyberdemon, clear loser.
