I know all of you have some crazy/funny/stupid tricks when it comes to playing retro vidya, at least when you were kids. Whether it's just superstition or some actual tricks, share the best ones.

>Blues Brothers for MsDOS
>game would freeze if let running idle for too long
>have to go to some stupid school christmas just when I got the furthest I had ever gone in this game (second last level)
>know about the freezing issue
>align it so that Elwood is facing a wall in a safe place
>put heavy toy car on keyboard so that it presses the arrow key and Elwood walks in place, thus tricking the game to think it's being played
>game doesn't crash and I pick up where I left few hours after

>PS1 has problem with reading discs
>turn the console upside down
>now it reads the discs fine

>disc has bad scratches
>rub some toothpaste on it
>wash the toothpaste off
>disc is now readable again

Here's one my older brother told me

>Track & Field for NES
>need to press B and A rapidly
>tapping the B and A buttons individually is too slow and painful
>he spits on the controller so that his thumb can slide between B and A buttons fluidly
>he wins his friend every singe time and never tells him his secret (it was his friend's NES)

>> No.2056459

I once bought Maximo from gamestop and it was too scuffed to work. It only cost me 3 bucks in the first place so I didn't bother taking it back. Should I try the toothpaste thing?

I had this as well, but actually making the PSX to stand upright/sideways for better results than even upside down (and yes, it actually did that unassisted). Then PS2 came over with the vertical stand = "I KNEW IT".

anyone know why the psx worked better upside down/sideways?

TBH I've always thought about that for years when I did it, but never could come up with anything.

I've always attributed it to how the Playstation CD holder/rotator could flex slightly whenever you try to put on or remove CDs.
Basically all I have as a kid was:
rotating disc + jiggly base + gravity + magic = helicopter + closer lenses + it just works.

Haven't bothered to really know why though, would love to actually hear an explanation.

Old models had a plastic track for the laser. It would wear out over time. Turning the console upside-down made the laser's weight rest on the other side of it.

You have to do it at the midfield, around this distance. Doing it right at the beginning when you have the ball is the best choice you could do. Sometimes the keeper might jump and punch the ball, granting you a corner kick

Another hint: the team with the best stats in the game is Argentina. There's a player with 12 speed, 12 kick power and 11 technique (best stats for a player in the entire game), and judging the release date of the game it just HAS to be Maradona.

Despite this, you can win the tournament mode with ANY team in the game, even in Hard mode (*).

(*) At the title screen, hold Up + A + B + Select + Start on the first controller and press Reset. If you're playing the wapanese ROM, the "Goal" will turn to blue, and if you're playing the american version, the background color will change to deep blue. The opposite team will be harder to tackle (sometimes impossible to do so)

Also don't forget that yellow and red cards are turned off in the japanese version, for some reason.

in water world in super mario 3, my brothers and I would always use a hammer to get to the boat

we'd move around the map on the boat, and every time he moves, we'd chant "boat"

so we'd just go boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat boat... for like thirty minutes. then we'd continue playing the game

it wasn't a trick to WIN, but it was a trick to have more fun, which is the best kind of trick

I always do knee only with my friend. We hardly ever miss a single knee attack and we if we lose one

Doubt anyone played this, but whatever.

In Vehicle Cavalier, you can actually get the weapon your opponent equips randomly upon their defeat. After completing the main story, you can continue playing and the enemies will now have upgraded new and unique weapons you otherwise wouldn't be able to get.

The myth is that on a match we would try to get the opponent on very low hp, before then doing an alpha strike, on the basis that huge overkill damage would increase the chances of you getting one of their weapons.

my technique for this sorta stuff was to place each thumb over a button, and wiggle the controller left and right in such a way that the buttons hit thumbs, not the other way around.

another method reported in a magazine was to cover your thumb with your sleeves (for blister prevention) and rub it furiously between the buttons

There's another little trick, basically it involves getting the correct timing regarding how the keeper blocks the ball, how many times he does it and how quickly you can react to his blocking

Both CPU's keeper and yours generally can block the ball two times in a quick succession at most. There's a chance for both of you to score at the second time you have the ball after a successful blocking (webm related). He's literally a dead man if the player manages to shoot quickly after the 3rd blocking, but remember, it goes both ways, your keeper is merciless after he blocks for the second time and the CPU manages to get the ball, because he'll still be in the ground after the 2nd attempt.

You either need to have a defensive player near the keeper to prevent things going bad or you're toast

In Tecmo cup soccer game you always get a free Diving head / Bicycle / other aerial shot at the goal if you use this pattern after a kickoff (after a goal, start of game). Dribble with Robin then pass to Mark, then go towards goal and pass.
Also when running out of time and you have the ball on your side of the field with nobody on the opponent's side, just shoot it and someone could magically appear there to meet the ball.

There's a super duper secret shot, it's a Robin & Damon combo and it's called Hyper howl. I think it works like this: You need to shoot a special shot 0-5 times and then when a GK blocks the shot and is "still on the ground" it will appear.

I don't think too many people played this game. It's one of my all time favorites, but I don't think I would recommend to everyone.
