2051429 No.2051429 [Reply] [Original]

Anyone else playing this new Mother/Earthbound Zero romhack? Someone took the GBA translation at stuck it into a patch for the Earthbound Zero rom floating around. He also apparently redid a bunch of sprites for enemies and NPCs, and added a bit more variety to scenery it seems. I've been playing for a few hours and it's pretty nice little romhack that doesn't really change the core game at all - just pretties it up quite a bit in my opinion. Also it's nice being able to play the GBA translation with the NES version which sounds so much better than the GBA.

Also general Mother/Earthbound thread I suppose.

Only "big" issue is that the flower tiles added to some scenery are solid apparently.

>In the original game, all of the flowers were inside gardens in the cities. And since players were never able to touch the flowers, the developers just left them solid. It’s weird, I know, but without a BB Hack update I won’t be able to make them passable.

The guy doing the hack had a handful of people beta test the hack for the past few weeks and it seems like he ironed out any bugs they found.

So is this now the definitive version rather than the GBA? Haven't played Mother 1 whatsoever.

Also, I heard someone's doing a remake of Mother with EarthBound graphics and the Tomato translation.
It's called--wait for it. "Mother Remake."
But it's still in progress.

>> No.2051959

>>2051956
It's not just Earthboung graphics, but the combat system as well. He's essentially remaking Mother 1 with Earthbound's engine.

And it's not going to be done for at least a decade.

Blah. Didn't know there was that much effort.
I have a Mother 3 repro on the way (yes, I know I can flash it but I'd rather spend my money on a dedicated cart), so I'd like to start the trilogy soon.
Wondering if I should play Mother from Mother 1 + 2 or this ROM hack.

>> No.2052024

>>2051973
This romhack is the same translation as the GBA one, and honestly I don't see any reason to touch the GBA port anymore. This one looks better than the GBA one with the touched up colors and sprites as well as added scenery, and the GBA port always had subpar audio compared to the NES.

Why wouldn't it be? All it does is pretty up the game and stick Tomato's translation into the NES game. It doesn't make the game any harder or easier nor does it change anything mechanical. The reason the guy made it was because too many people complain about the original being "too dated" to play. So he made it more pleasing to the eye.

>> No.2052275

>>2052060
The sprites, maps, and stats are different from the original so if you want the "authentic" experience you should probably play 1+2.
Haven't played through this hack but I read he changed dialogue as well.

>I read he changed dialogue as well.
He changed it to the re-translation that Tomato did for 1+2. Which is what people consider the definitive script.

>> No.2053290

>>2052185
Actually it DOES make it easier; that was one of the states points of the hack. It "rebalances" EXP gain and lowers encounter rates in some areas.

That said, I kinda wish I could play with the original visuals/maps but with all of the gameplay/text enhancements. I suppose I could just do 1+2, even though the sound is shit.

Yeah it's pretty much the same as using the Easy Ring in the GBA translation. It speeds the game up a bit so you're not getting bogged down in boring fights constantly. I rather like it.

I'm on my first playthrough of the original MOTHER and I wanted to know, are the melodies needed for story progression or is it like a completionist thing?

>> No.2054531

>>2054530

They are needed for story proggression, but they don't need to be collected in a specific order (like in Earthbound, but in M1 everything feels less lineal).

The guitar man in Magicant's song gives you a hint of where every melody can be found.

by the way this hack doesn't look very good, I'll stick to the original.

Because Teddy didn't die.
He got better and actually became a successful rockstar afterwards.

yeah, it was ambiguous in the original Famicom version since it didn't have the extended ending, but to me it was evident he was just seriously injuried but not actually dead. I mean, they wouldn't let him just rest in bed if he was dead, they'd bury him or something. It was still a sad moment, especially the music that plays in the room he's in

>> No.2054562

>> No.2054567

>>2054560
I always thought they didn't bury him because they were all too young to understand that's how you do it. They might have thought death was like a deep sleep akin to a coma.

But I totally forgot about the extended ending so yeah, its almost certainly he's alive retcon or not.

>> No.2054568

>>2054567

There is an adult man in the same house though (who is supposedly taking care of Teddy), and you'd think Ninten knows how to bury people, I mean he's seen graves before, remember the flying men on magicant?
Also they aren't that young, Ninten is 12 or 13.

I'm planning on doing my first playthrough O Mother/Earthbound Zero. Is it like most RPGs where there's a chance of losing something permanently so I'm obliged to use a walkthrough? (yes, I'm a completionist, fuck me).

Also, do I play the original or this Anniversary hack? I'm looking for a more balanced playthrough so I'm more inclined for the hacked one, anything else to consider on this?

>by the way this hack doesn't look very good, I'll stick to the original.

Gotta agree. I really wish though someone would take the Mother GBA translation and just shove it into the NES version though. The Earthbound Zero translation is really not that great, but the NES version looks and sounds so much better than the shitty GBA.
