What does /vr/ think of this game series? I love it and I think it set me on the path of JRPGs in general because I loved everything about it. Characters, Gameplay, Story, Plot Elements, etc.

I still need to get around to playing them myself, but I've heard pretty good things about the first two games. Is Gaijinworks still trying to get both on the PSN?

On that note, considering everything I've heard about Lunar: Dragon Song on the DS, I feel really sorry for fans of the older games that had to deal with that one.

>> No.2050470

Lunar is a game series that I cant even bring myself to play but makes me sigh contentedly every time I see or read about it. I still havent spoiled anything about the game for myself.

I really need to play it.

The GBA port is not just one of the worst ports but one of the worst games I have ever played.

The PS1 and Saturn versions are arguably the best ones.

Should I play the Sega CD version or just play Complete Edition on the PS1?

>> No.2050550

>>2050398
I didn't really like it. Played it on PS1 but I had already played a lot of RPG's like Star Ocean the Second Story and The Legend of Dragoon so Lunar felt very archaic with a predictable "paint by numbers" story. If it was one of your first RPG's or "anime" style games I can see how it would leave an impression but there really isn't anything to set it apart.

Just recently did a stream of this game, and I beat it in two days because it was that great. In the past I've played it numerous times but never got passed disc one.

The characters are interesting, the battle system is -amazing- (are there any other games with similar battle systems?). The sequel is pretty great.

I've only played the PS1 version, though have played the sega cd version of 2. I don't really have a preference.

Also anyone remember how great the guides were for these games? Everything about them were perfect, down from the slip to the memory card stickers, to the comics included.

Good luck with that. If you're wanting an actually complete copy (with all the cool stuff WD included with it) it can be a fair bit pricy. Same with the second game (where I live it's about $130 altogether for both if complete and in good shape; $60 for the first game and about $70 for the second, and that's at the more reasonably priced places).

>> No.2050851

Maybe, but most used games don't tend to cost as much as they did new (though there are of course exceptions). Just saying you might want to make sure you give it some more thought before dropping that much on them, though if you're deadset on them, go ahead. From what I recall, some of the extras Working Designs included with them were pretty damn nice.

Lunar isn't even the best jrpg on the GENESIS, a platform well known for the huge number of jrpgs. And that's a dumb thing to say anyway. The first JRPG I played was Chrono Trigger, and I've since played games I enjoyed more. Lunar 2 was one of them.

Toned down difficulty to a ridiculous degree. The dungeons, the battle system, the magic, the boss fights. It's a much simplified game overall.

Plus the Sega CD version has amazing pixel-art cutscenes which were replaced by really heavily compressed traditionally animated cel cutscenes in the PSX version. Lunar 1's cutscenes animation just consisted of mouths flapping; Lunar 2's was full-on.

>> No.2050862

>>2050859
It has to do with the huge number of differences between Lunar 1 on the SCD and Lunar 1 on the Playstation. They are basically different games, but the Playstation version has better gameplay and a more fleshed out plot.

Lunar 2 doesn't have these differences. The Playstation version is more or less the same game with cut-down dungeons and minor presentation changes. But the original SCD version has better sound quality, more appealing graphics (darker colors and a slightly less 90's looking artstyle). The dungeons, which were fairly long in the original, were butchered in the playstation remake. And the fullscreen rendered cutscenes are just a treat to watch if you're a fan of seeing the Sega CD actually DO what the CD technology promised could be done. (everyone knows the playstation can show heavily artifacted FMV, seeing the Sega CD do good cutscenes is not usual.)

It isn't a massive difference in quality or anything, though. The Playstation version isn't bad.

>> No.2050865

>>2050862
To add to this, the Playstation version feels abridged. It moves too quickly and the story feels abrupt. A ton of the personality comes from the cute little sprites, and in the Sega CD version, you have lots of random battles and longer dungeons where you seem to get to know the characters better. The lack of real dungeons in the PS1 version means you are basically moving from story setpiece to setpiece without much in between.

Any time I've seen negative comments about Lunar 2, it is always because they played the Playstation version and just didn't get attached to the characters or story because the pacing feels wrong.

>> No.2050885

>>2050861
>cel cutscenes

Lunar 2 PSX version was released right as traditional animation was being shelved, and has jarring CGI objects, like the ship, stuck in them. Looks pretty bad. The characters look pretty ugly too. And I usually love seeing traditional animu shorts in my games. The anime intros in the CD versions of Langrisser make me hard.

This might explain why I liked lunar 1 more than 2 for the playstation, despite still liking the characters in 2, but it did feel a bit off compared to 1 at times.

I remember playing the first part of lunar 2 on CD up to lucia joining the party, and felt like it was pretty close to the playstation version except with random encounters, so put it off.

I'll put CD lunar 2 higher on the priority list of games to play.

It's great but Eternal Blue really falls off from Silver Star. Well, I only played the Complete PS1 versions and part of EB Saturn but the story remains relatively the same.
