2049970 No.2049970 [Reply] [Original]

I finally got around to replacing the belt in my Disk System and I love this thing. Even though I have it running through a 60-72 pin converter from a Gyromite cart into a shitty famiclone toploader, it's comfy as fuck.

Let's get a Disk System thread going.

>> No.2049974

>dat FDS music

It always breathes fresh air into a title I've played a million times on the NES.

Even something as familiar as the Zelda title screen music is totally transformed:

I replaced the belt on mine with a rubber band, seems to work for now. where does one find an official replacement?

1) Using a rubber band is a terrible idea. It'll probably break/wear out long before an actual belt will.
2) Actual Nintendo belts are near-impossible to get now, but reproduction belts are available from a few places. I got mine from Console5.com

Do you get an error message or did the disk get written over?

>> No.2050016

>>2050013
Error message.

went to the shop that sold it to me, when i asked for a refund they first tried it on their machine, worked, couldnt get a refund (not that i want one anyway, just glad my copy is somewhat readable)

In that case it's probably your Disk System itself. If it's worth the effort to you, try adjusting your drive speed and/or spindle hub alignment. Here's a good tutorial: http://www.famicomdisksystem.com/tutorials/fds-repair-mod/belt-replacement-adjustment/

thx, i'll give it a shot after work.

i also gotta check these other FDS i bought from my last trip to JP

What are some good FDS games that can be acquired fairly easily and don't require much language dependence?

>> No.2050057

>>2050056
metroid, zelda, castlevania, electrician, SMB2J

>> No.2050060

>>2050057
Oh, I meant to also say I was looking for ones that aren't also on the NES, but some good reccomendations there.

you have way too many requirements

kaettekitta mario brothers is my personal favorite, it's an fds exclusive that was only available on the disk writer.

>> No.2050067

The disk system is probably the most unreliable piece of shit there is,it seems to be impossible to calibrate them properly, you think you've done it because your game loads up but then you try another game and it wont load up so you calibrate it again and the game works but then the previous game has stopped working,or you get side A working perfectly and side B wont work at all.

I do have 1 disk system that seems to play everything i throw at it but ive sold my disks now ,i hear that the famicom everdrive plays disk system games so im going down that route.

So does the PowerPak but it doesn't support multi-disk games yet

>> No.2050093

Something tells me that the Virtual Boy is still a more frustrating item to own and use than an FDS.

hasn't received an update 4 four years, it'll NEVER support multi-disk. please stop shilling this POS already.

Speaking of, is there any real reason to play the FDS version of Metroid over the Famicom version? Supposedly the FDS version has come improvements but they seemed pretty identical to me.

well, the save feature would be the most notable, and one we would take for granted.

>> No.2050273

Different music and sounds plus a save system instead of passwords. Might be fun if you played the original back in the day and want to see what's different.

>I made it work with an easily replaceable part that costs pennies.
>omg must be high

>>2049996
>You'll have to replace your rubber band part some day
>terrible idea. buy a black one from someone else for 100x more

>>2049986
Well done. I've done this as well, without being high. That was about 2 years ago and it's still working. I'm sure you know as well as I do that it's not going to last forever but I got 50 rubber bands for something like a buck so I'm good.

I've been following the PowerPak development on & off since it came out and was rather surprised by the serious lack of updates and general support on their part. What's them leaving their users hanging like that?

Konami had plenty of decent exclusive for the FCD. Armana no Kiseki, Meikyuu Jiin Dababa, Ai Senshi Nicol, and Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa comes to mind (I know Bio Miracle had a cart release, but it's really expensive). Also, Moero TwinBee and the FC Dracula games have exclusive features not in their NES versions.

glad to see i'm not the only one, for what it's worth the rubber band I used was a perfect square and black in color. it works really well, I mean i've tested it at least a hundred times and it works without fail.
