Rocbouquet did nothing wrong edition

>What is SaGa?
It's a Jrpg series produced by Akitoshi Kawazu back in the early Final Fantasy days, however it differs from most other Jrpg series by being more Wrpg oriented, it's non-linear, with multiple main characters, multiple endings and very unusual mechanics based on classic Tabletop RPGs
>What are the games?
The first SaGa games are known in the west as Final Fantasy Legends, so chances are you played those in your childhood on ye olde brick GB, then there is the Romancing SaGa trilogy on the SNES, the two SaGa Frontier titles on the PS One and Minstrel Song(a remake of the first Romancing SaGa) and Unlimited: Saga on the PS2.
>What are the games I can play in English
All the FFL titles were localized, same with the PS One and PS2 titles, there is also an english patch for Romancing SaGa 3 but unfortunately the first two titles are still in Japanese only, though Gideon Zhi is working on those.

The SaGa Frontier 2 Novel, which can be considered the canon storyline, says that he dies together with Johanne at the fort during the monsters' assault.
There's also a bit more to that, the monsters were used by The Scorpions, it was all set against Gustave as a revenge for destroying the Anima cult and because he was reviled for having no Anima, there's also a cool scene with Johanne and Juda, the female Assassin that appeared at the end of Johanne's episode. And if you're wondering, no it wasn't the Egg's doing, Gustave was as loved as he was hated by some poeple.

I love SaGa games, but they always flare up my OCD when I start thinking about how to manipulate their mechanics without fucking myself over.

Not always an issue with some of the games but with shit like romasaga 3s class and weapon selection determining your type, or saga frontier's (and TLR) battle rank bullshit, it can put me off of replays.

Well, it's not even the worst you can have against you, RomaSaGa 2 Battle Rank increases every time you fight something, even if you run away from it, so you have to be extra careful all the time and deal with it, not to mention that you can only get new magic by increasing your magic proficiency and you'll have to pay loads of money for your wizards to develop a new spell, or to your blacksmiths for developing better equipment, or to your chancellor for managing the empire.

I dunno I always found them pretty relaxing and easy to play!

Mainly like especially on replay because I already know what to do

With RS3 it's not like your type matters that much, you just match your weapon type to the base stats your character is good at and they turn out alright.

In Saga Frontier I regularly destroy that game every playthrough now, just because I have pretty much all the treasure locations memorized, and the first part of the game is always about getting mad lootz rather than leveling up

Which sort of makes sense really, you don't just jump into the sewers and start smashing robots with a knife, there's a kind of process to being a successful Science Wizard/Samurai/Ninja/Mercenary/Adventurer/Treasure Hunter

k so, start a new game, and the first thing you do is treasure hunt right

The junk shop has a list of a bunch of items that it actually buys at a pretty good price! But because of some minor programming oversight, the address of the item your selling overlaps with the number of items you're allowed to take from the junk pile, and the quality of the items you get is pulled from a different address that's fiddled with when you sell items to the lizards

So most people know you can press the button on the hyperion bazooka without having any to sell then go and take a bunch of free items, then continuously sell the repair kits you sometimes get to gradually improve the item rank

this takes forever and feels pretty bad

what you can also do is, go to shingrow, go into the crashed space ship, find the HyperScale and DualGun, then get the hell out of there dodging the bats which will destroy you at your starting level unless you're both lucky and got the skillz

Then you go to scrap, go to the junk shop, and pay the lizards to take some items, doesn't matter what you get they're all gonna be crap (get some armor to fill the slots in your party tho, anything is better than nothing)

Go back to the lizards now that you're allowed in and sell the lizards your DualGun.

Go back in, pick all your picks from the gun pile. Every pick that isn't junk is suddenly the best ranked item, a LethalGun.

Go back, sell them your HyperScale, get more free picks, keep getting junk or lethalguns

end up with 2-4 lethalguns and like 3000 credits for your trouble

If you want you can pretend to sell hyperion bazookas at this point to get as many electro armors and lethal guns and other top ranked items as you like

but you shouldn't

because that's cheating :3

>>2049351
In some SaGa, like 2 there is permadeath though, if one of your character runs out of LP it's dead for good though the vast majority are "generic"character so even if they die you can recruit another character of the same class that has of course different stats, different glimmer charts and of course doesn't have the techs and magic of the previous character.
In some other cases there is a pseudo perma death, in RomaSaGa 3 for instance if you recruit Boston without saving the Island at the end of the World and he dies/you dismiss him, you can't get him back, Yukidaruma can effectively die if a certain condition in a boss battle is triggered...It all depends on the game.
Even MinSon has pseudo permadeath for some characters like Frielei and Dragon Knight.

In Minstrel Song the story will stop progressing until you advance the Battle Rank by battling monsters enough, which opens up new events in different places.

You get good by earning jewels and upgrading your character classes, you won't learn any good techs until you get your weapon level up to 2 or 3 and fight stronger monsters.

stick with the basic classes first playthrough or use a guide and try to unlock the legendaries and stay at level 3 in your skills, you get more jewels in consecutive playthroughs.

It is quite slow and a single playthrough takes an average of 30 hours.

I wouldn't recommend bingeing on it.

>I just want to be overpowered like in Frontier
HAHAHAHAH no, forget it.
Frontier is easy mode SaGa, to get Frontier Tier OP you'll have to plan and grind like mad in any other title, except RomaSaGa 3 maybe, that's fairly easy.

If you want to get gud that's another matter entirely.
The game's story progression revolves on Battle Rank, as you get higher BR you'll unlock quests and be very careful as most quests also expire once you reach a certain BR so fighting monsters mindlessly only means you're locking yourself out of quests, which means no money and jewels and that means you are screwed and need to restart a playthrough since you can't upgrade your class/abilities or buy good equipment/magic. You'll be forced to make do with what you have most of the times, so learn how the battle system works, buy and forge weapons, learn how the magic works and how you should build a character and make a balanced team, DON'T STEAL THE ICE SWORD, don't be cocky, have fun.
>>2050592
Depends, do you like extreme complexity with zero explanation? Unlimited requires serious dedication, it's the hardest and most cryptic SaGa title, if you couldn't stand Frontier 2 or TLR difficulty and system you'll never like Unlimited as it's much more difficult than those two combined. It's very rewarding though and an amazing game once you get into it, but it's really, really complex, puts game like Wizardry or DF to shame.

to be fair SF2 isn't 100% easy

there are times when it will just bend you over and shove it all in dry without any decent warning

mainly the last part of gustave's branch is tactical hell and the last part of wil's branch is a marathon buttfuck dungeon that you have a high likelihood of not being prepared for at all, with chain bossfights and a brutal last boss that depends on how well you did on the dungeon's earlier bosses.

Oh, I never said SF2 is easy, on the contrary.
It was like they put RomaSaGa 2 difficulty back in the series though it's not quite as ruthless, fortunately. But Unlimited is on a whole different level, SF2 at least lets you advance through the game with some moderate difficulty level and huge spikes and constant threats, Unlimited is a constant "what the fuck is going on" difficulty.
As an Anon once said comparing it to TLR, It's like being aboard a rape train, TLR makes you feel like a helpless passenger whereas Unlimited makes you feel like a helpless conductor, so you have the chance to tame the rapetrain if you learn how to drive it.

That said, SF2 buttrape surprises are great.

The novel explains this, turns out that they had a mutual understanding on the matter of marrying and having children, Gustave didn't want to involve Leslie in his life as she would have been targeted by people who wanted to harm Gustave and she didn't want to become a hindrance to his dream, she also knew that Gustave's massive self esteem problems would have become even worse if something happened to her/their children. It's kinda sad isn't it?

The Egg is the ultimate quell, its so powerful that it has it's own sentience and ego and was the cause of the downfall of the old civilization. Literally it causes wars and chaos of it's own accord to attempt to gain control over the world and life itself and that's why the ancients locked it in a lead casket in the middle of nowhere.

It's a quell created so powerful, supposed to be able to grant wishes and actualize the will of the wielder, that it actually became alive and started mind controlling people and shit.

It's a symbol of man's potential and turned on him as a result of his own hubris.

Alright, lenghty spoilers ahead.

After you defeat Sargon he says that Quells are objects that contain a sealed soul, that's radically different from Tools since they're just object infused with raw Anima and can break easily.
The souls sealed inside Quells are those of Hahn's people, they created the Quells and the Egg to be revived in a distant future, when the surviving mankind would have evolved and be able to tap into the power of Quells. The Egg is an artificial Quell tasked with the purpose of gathering enough energy in order to supposedly revive the people of Hahn and get their souls out of the Quells to inhabit human bodies once again. However, the Quell absorbed so much Anima it eventually developed a deviant personality, while the normal Egg would have theoretically passively absorbed Anima, the new Quell awakened by Henry Knights, Wil's father, became a rogue Quell that feasted on the Anima of its owner and whoever came into contact with him, absorbing the anima and storing it inside the physical artefact. That causes basically the Knight's family feud against the Egg.
Theoretically, the Egg would have been a power source for the Megaliths though the exact function of the former is never properly explained, they're meant to convey Anima power and their purpose is the revival of Hahn's inhabitants, but it's not explained exactly how that would happen. There are also other things regarding the Egg that are vague, such as the ability to influence Anima in many ways, for instance how Alexei and the Pirate Captain were able to control Wyverns, or how Fake Gustave can alterate his body to some extent.

Continuing muh spoilers

What is very interesting is that this explanation of the Egg and Megaliths obviously makes you think about a few other things.
First of all, Laubholz Tower.
It's never explained what this tower actually is, some parts, like the basement are reminiscent of the Megaliths but the rest of the structure is very different and its purpose it's unknown as well. Laubholz inhabitants say that it's a cursed tower and (almost) all the people inside are zombies, that can however speak, and there are also sealed monsters like the Gargoyle, the plant monster in the painting, the Lich etc. It is also similar to the Undead Asylum for some things as the undead are sealed within it, but there are other things that are quite misterious, there is a very powerful Quell, the Elven Lire but also a very powerful Steel weapon, The Cinderforge Sword which also has the same exact sprite as Gustave's Sword.
Secondly, the Ice Megalith, why was Tycoon Wil turned into the Megalith Beast? It responded to Wil's Anima but then turned Tycoon Wil into a monster after it resonated with his Anima? That sheds some light on the fact that Knights are supposedly owners of enormously powerful Anima as the Egg itself states and Rich shows by resisting to the power of the Egg before killing himself.
Many questions remain unanswered, and perhaps it's better like this.
>>2051258
But Rei killed herself because she wanted to reincarnate and escape from Orlouge, this is stated in the game, we don't know if she knew Kurenai somehow connected regions.

Didn't expect this game to have a thread, but boy am I in luck.

Just bought Unlimited Saga, first SaGa game I've played other than the first FFL. And I'm fucking bewildered. It probably doesn't help that I don't have the manual, just bought the disc from Gamestop.

I just started Ventus' story, chose him since the game recommended it for first plays, and I'm a tad overwhelmed. There's about a million different menus and I have no idea what most do. I left town without doing much but saving, and saw a slime that didn't actually fight me. So I examine the area and get into a fight. And then I have to choose like 5 abilities to use, and I can't tell the difference between any of them so I just picked the first spear attack over and over. Then the enemy moves, and hits me for more than my health. But then I get to do a roulette full of the same icon, and I perform the attack I chose, kill the first enemy and then do an attack I didn't choose and kill the second enemy. Now the battle is over and I have 0 HP but no one seems to care except me the player.

Can someone give me a rundown on the mechanics, or point me in the direction to something that can? Because fuck me, the game seems neat but I am clueless.

Also to save you some time and directly explain what happened, Unlimited Saga is weird in that HP doesn't really work like "hit points" but more like "stamina". The less HP you have, the higher chance the enemy has to knock off one (or more) of your LP, which you should think of as your actual "hit points". You can't regen LP, but you can do so with HP, either by resting outside of combat (L3/R3 button) or not acting for one turn in combat (just do actions with other guys and not with the low HP one). Each turn you select 5 attacks, distributed in any way across your entire party. You can also combo them by "holding" the reel and if stars are properly aligned and you understand the utterly arcane battle speed system enough (or just get lucky), you'll get two (or more) reels rolling at the same time and the resulting attack will be really strong and likely will knock off at least one enemy LP - comboing is pretty much mandatory in late game, so it's worth learning.

the battle speed thing isn't that bad

it depends on:
-the particular speed of each individual attack
-the total weight of your character and all the gear they're wearing
-the speed related stats of the character using the attack (offhand, I forget what they're called, probably agility or something)

the rest is up to the rock paper scissors game of choosing what attacks to use.

the panel system is much more fun than that

You lose HP for every action you take in combat, HP are more like a stamina system that prevents you from fainting. You can see the HP cost of every action in the menu.

Some actions are of course more costly than others, but you can't avoid losing HP, that's why you must have someone that can heal and can do that well enough to not let someone get slaughtered. You'll see what I mean once you get to one of the Seven Wonders, most of the bosses there can eat up 10 LP in one turn if you can't into healing and comboing.

Not really, unless you went with a full robot party.

The purpose of the Tarot and Rune quests is that the Human/Mystic members of the main party get the Gift for a magic type once you finish the quests, it's also a good way to train your party and gain some nice abilities without wandering around.
Also, T260G story progress revolves on checking a computer in Koorong in the abandoned apartment. You can do that any time you want too, if you don't care about subquests just go there, it's the door behind the chicken in the second main street.

Well, they vanished after they defeated the monsters from the netherworld,it was a really epic battle, however the mages and lord of the kingdom from where they came from where experimenting on some kind of interdimensional magic(that also opened the way to the netherworld from where monsters came from), the Seven heroes were firmly against this and so, since apparently the lord and mages were that power hungry they baited them into a portal and sealed them in the netherworld forever.
What happened later is uncertain, Oaive herself says that they were corrupted by the dark energies and slowly turned into monsters, the Seven Heroes you fight in the world are just Avatars of the real ones in the netherworld, they apparently found a way to open a portal and came back for revenge against those who betrayed them and to punish humanity. However, that's the official version of the story, the true purpose of the 7 heroes is very foggy and each one of them is pretty different, Dantarg for instance is only searching for the best fighters in the world, he's pretty uninterested in world domination or revenge, Noel too is doing it only out of loyalty to Wagnas, his best friend and you can even decide not to fight him and get back the territories he occupied by simply asking him that(unless you killed Rocbouquet, her sister, in that case he gets pretty mad and fights you in his strongest from), Bokuohn is...just there, he's the strategist of the group and answers to Wagnas, Rocbouquet was searching for magical artefacts from the lost civilization(the ones who sealed them, for the record) but again, it's never stated why, probably because Wagnas asked her for some reason, and since she has a huge crush on him she decided to play along, Subier likes scuba diving, narwhales and octopuses and Kujinshi is the bullied underling of the lot. The only one who has the clear goal of taking revenge against humans by ruling them is Wagnas.

You just made me squeal like a Japanese schoolgirl. AND it's by the guy that did the recent Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei patch? That dude's come a long way from being kind of a joke for disappearing with KMT a few years back. I'm excited to try it.

TBH though I've yet to play much of a SaGa game. The closest I've done is get about halfway through SaGa/FFL. I might play more now that I beat a couple games recently, and move on to FFL2. A little off the retro topic, but have any of you tried the SaGa 2 patch? Hows the localization, and the game compared to the original?

so I started playing Unlimited Saga again with Ruby's file

Right now I'm running into that age old issue of magic tablets being a fucking crapshoot

I was gonna make Ruby a fire mage, and put Hiro on Axes and Sapphire on bows, and just do whatever with Iskenderun

as of right now I have Sapphire looking pretty with Bows 2/3 on the bottom left, punch 2 and kick 2 on top right, and I'm waiting on a thief panel to randomly drop so I can start filling the center line

so she's like, gud right now

Hiro has a martial arts line already and axe 2 covering the other strength slot and is basically a beast

the problem is that I have no fucking idea what is happening with Iskenderun and Ruby

Ruby has a metal familiar and two kick panels and is dropping zero other martial arts panels and learning no techs, but has an axe panel in the center and two body panels in the top left, she's some sort of tank with pathetic HP and I'm not sure a fire tablet is going to show up any time soon. I really wish her skill multiplier wasn't so pathetic or I'd commit to martial arts as a hybrid for her, but I don't see the point of a lightweight character that keeps fucking missing

Iskenderun has a fucking water tablet and 3 field panels to go with his weapon meister and sword 3 panel. I ended up dropping a punch 2 on his strength slot just to fix his stats. I can't decide what exactly to do with him. I think I'm going to have joint field panels on his water slots and joint sword panels opposite that,, with a shield panel or an iron body in the top right strength slot, and utilize his inherent heavy-weight status to get Raksasha, making some sort of Tank+Water build out of him

in terms of blacksmithing and questing, I forgot everything and have no idea what I'm doing, and I love it

Blue: ALL THE MAGIC
T260: ROBOTS
Red: KAMEN RIDER

Lute: IS SOMEHOW A MAIN CHARACTER INSTEAD OF FUSE

Blue and Lute don't have much of a story on their routes, but Blue is really fun to mess around with, because he has access to so many spells. My personal favorite routes are T260, Red, and Asellus.

Tried fighting the assholes in the Yorkville swamp but got my shit slapped immediately. I picked Rouge and grinded him and Lute for a while in Sei's Tomb; I wanted that cool looking sword but Skeleton Death Lord assholes ruined my life. Now I have a whole fucksquad (Robot, Mystic, Mage chick, Your Brother) puttering around the Alleyway Slums area.

He's not really your brother. Lute is just an older kid who grew up with him. Aniki is a colloquial term in Japanese that means "brother" and is used by people who usually aren't related possibly because they're from the same gang or crew ("family"). It's typical yakuza slang. It's also taken to mean that you're brothers when two guys have been with the same woman.

Saga Frontier 2 and Unlimited Saga have the best aesthetic out of any of the games.

It looks good, sounds good, and feels good. in terms of battle system I feel like Unlimited Saga>SF2>SF>Minstrel Song>RS3>RS2>RS>FFL2>FFL3>FFL

The tool/quell stuff and magical schools and duel system and hybrid skills are all really fun.

Some parts of the game are boring depending on what you're interested in, mainly some people aren't too hot on Gustave's story which feels almost like watching a book read itself at times

He is worth it. Replace Lute with him and you then have a good team. Well, get rid of your bro if you don't want to learn how to make monsters good, and maybe replace the mystic with another human for the same reason. Also, Lute is the only main character in the SaGa series that you can take out of your main party, so that tells you how useless he is. Supposedly his skill tree, which affects his chance of "sparking" techs or "glimmers", is good, but his stat growths suck hard. The drunk hobo samurai you asked about is one of the best characters in the game. Also, Rouge is about the second best.

Saga frontier 2 is mostly story heavy compared to the other games in the series, and gustaves story, while cool is mostly cutscenes.

Wil's story is a little more free form, at least within the confines of the scenario system in SF2, also its much harder.

In fact saga frontier 2 is a hard as balls game, that feels way more difficult to break than the other Saga games, even if you grind in wil's first chapter, where you can learn almost every tech with enough patience, it still kinda kicks your ass.

Gen is one of the strongest human characters you can get at the initial point of his recruitment (only say, Cpt. Hamilton, Roufas, and Fuse might start out better) and he tends to be the strongest sword using character in most people's games when they use him. He's not bad at Fighting either, though he kind of sucks at magic and guns. Liza, Emelia, and Fuse are probably the only normal human characters who have better potential overall.

He can be recruited by any character and he's pretty reliable.

Monsters aren't that great unless you just want something that's really hard to kill. They don't do nearly as much damage as magic users or humans in general, but they can get cheap healing techs and can be equipped with charms that immunize them against certain attacks. Useful, but not as heavy hitting as other races. Even Mechs are more fun in my opinion since all you need for them is good equipment to make them useful. Monsters require a lot of time to make them ok.

>> No.2053937

>>2053927
monsters are just the hardest type to play properly.

you have 8 skills and learning a new one replaces the bottom skill in their list. They gain more HP with each unique skill they learn and this gets them better forms. You get different forms depending on what skills you have in your active list and what order they're in when you absorb a new skill from a monster. Managing all of this and guiding them into something actually useful is harder than the straight forward grinding and gearing the other races need to get gud.

Having more than two monsters/mystics isn't like having all humans or all robots. you have to be aware of what your doing somewhat.

Monsters are good for when things go balls to the wall insane and you need a meatshield that can revive the team, but at that point in the game, you should already have enough damage or tankiness to survive long enough to nuke.

In Saga Frontier, and actually almost every Saga Game, there is actually separate values for different kinds of defense.

off the top of my head SF has Slash/Blunt/Pierce/Heat/Cold/Electric/Force for elements, and most attacks have more than one category, and pick the lowest defense value of the target to use.

The displayed value on the SF status screen is slash defense only, so even if you make a mec with "99" defense it probably still has Electric and Force Defense at half that or less

Add that to the fact that its... Psychic I think that defends against magic attacks? They also have low status defense.

On the other hand a Black Dragon can put on a KrisKnife, Windshell, Pearl Heart/Sea Stone, and Harmonium Earring, and be protected from almost everything pretty much perfectly. Monsters get hidden equip slots built into their forms so a black dragon can actually equip more and better balanced defensive gear than a mec.

>> No.2057649

Steel equipment is terrible because it has an abysmal SP enhance property which is what is used to protect you from SP-type attacks depending on how much of your Max SP you have remaining.

And most of the nasty attacks from tougher enemies are of that type.

The best armor is actually the Blackstone Armor, Lobster Mail, Redstone Armor, Lake Robe, and Stardust Robe, and not in that order.

Crystal Wings are the best shoes, Water Mirror is the best shield, and Mystic Veil is the best headgear.

Steel equipment sucks without exception unless you're going up against purely physical enemies, at which point it's still quite a burden, because even though WP abilities get stronger the less WP you have, if you have no SP hybrid arts or spells to fall back on you will find yourself burning LP every turn or throwing out crap attacks or defending while you try and recover.

The Cinderforge sword is complete junk, sword arts aren't even that strong. The strongest one is a hybrid art. I use Gustaf as a mage when I play and try and get Ginny the Granite Staff or just have her use martial arts augmented with her excellent inherent spellcasting ability.

The game lied to you. You can go and put a character in nothing but pure 100% steel equips and then switch to some other gear and see which works better for resisting spells. As long as you have 50% or so SP out of your max SP enhance gear is always better. Even if you were using a purely physical WP based character you'd want them to have Blackstone Armor not some steel crap. Not even the best steel gear is worth it, especially when physical attacks are really not the biggest priority (you can block and deflect/counter them with most weapons and shields).

Don't use steel equipment no matter how much the game wants you to think it's appropriate.

>> No.2057919

That's honestly kind of the theme of the game, it sort of suckers you into thinking steel gear is the best because of gustave being a badass and the steel units shitting on people in the strategy battles.

But gustave was the exception, not the rule.

Also its hard to tell how gustave even stacks up with other characters because you get to play him so little, even if he has high stat gains, would he even be a good party member for the endgame if you could use him?

>> No.2057978

No, for two reasons:
1. If the SP thing is true then he has no defense against the strong magic attacks
2. Age effects the stats of your character, while Gustave is younger than Will he'd still have lower HP and PA from being old.

Points for Gustave:
1. Gustave also has Martial Proficiency and could easily learn all the Martial Moves, including the max damage maneuver.
2. Gustave is Gustave

First of all, the fact that Ito has been doing the music for most of the titles gives them a very uniform feeling, you know you're playing SaGa when you hear its music, than there's another excellent choice in Masashi Hamauzu which is of course different from Ito but has worked on the two most unusual titles in the series, SF2 and Unlimited, giving them a "one of a kind" feeling imho.
Don't forget that Uematsu has worked with Ito on the GB SaGa and Tsuyoshi Sekito helped with remix and a few new tracks in MinSon, and TLR still has Sekito.
If anything there's a really good feeling of continuity in the series regarding soundtracks, and there's also a huge variety, SaGa is one of the few series that has tons of different Battle Themes, and they're all exceptional.

Do not fight the 4 Elemental Lords, they give out specific items in which you can summon them if you complete their requests.

I am going by the Minstrel Song names for reference

Avi (Wind): Wants the Ignigarde from Pyrix in exchange for the Cyclone Shoes
Pyrix (Fire): Wants the Ice Sword in exchange for the Ignigarde
Adyllis (Earth): Wants the Cyclone Shoes from Avi in exchange for the Raincloud Armlet
Strom (Water): Wants the Raincloud Armlet from Adyllis in exchange for Wuhan's Daughter to complete the Water Dragon Rite Quest

Otherwise, fighting them just gives out their specific items you would have gotten from the trade sequence.

The reason why you shouldn't kill Tiny Feather/Avi, is that Saruin is can be easily killed by Tiny Feather's/Avi's Petrification Beak.

Only in the remake is it worth fighting the Elemental Lords, and that is in a 2nd playthrough and after successfully completing their ecology quests, failing the ecology quests in the 2nd playthrough allows you to fight their corrupted versions which give out some useful weapons.

T260G's quest is so easy, once you pimped out doc leon and T260G , you won't need to though. and the final boss is designed to deal out high damage, instant death attacks, and status effect. a good monster with the right equips can deal with the status effects and instant death, but it can't absorb much damage.

optimal team for taking on genocide heart is probably half team of mecs, half humans with blood chalices. mecs can tank the damage and ignore most of the status effects. humans take less damage from magnetic storm , carry the backpack to heal the mecs, potentially deal more damage than mecs.

if you grind gen a lot, you can beat genocide heart with just gen and T260G.

Early on, grind to learn new abilities. You do this by fighting stronger enemies. Don't worry too much about weapon and magic levels, go with what works. Characters have a + symbol showing what they're good at.

Try to collect as many quells as you can, search high and low in each stage, they're very valuable throughout the game.

When you get to Ginny's quest, you'll want to spend some time grinding your characters to make them stronger, she needs a bit of a boost because of the challenge at the end of the game.

There's a guide that shows the chronological order of the quests in the game and nothing else. That's a pretty decent order to play it in.

The thing about the game is even though I love it, to get the most out of it you need to know what's coming next. It can be an easy thing to shoot yourself in the foot on some scenario's not having explored thoroughly enough.

One thing i'd recommend is trying to get some dead stones from the first Wil Knights scenario. 2 of them, 3 if you're patient.
You can get them in the room to the far right with the chest above some stairs and a solitary (TOUGH) skeleton hanging around. It is usually accompanied by Ghosts too.
All you have to do is use the Stone Spell Delta Petra to deal with these guys and just keep farming it until they drop.

It's an equippable item that nullify's instant death attacks which is vital late game.

>> No.2062641

>>2062624
I think Sonic protection is even more valuable than Instant Death protection in the game's hardest fights actually.

There are a few significant ways of attaining it.

-Early in the game, in the Wil Knights scenario called "Showdown! Alexei" or some such, you'll go to a canyon where there are a bunch of birds flying around. You can get these birds to knock treasures off of the cliffs if you get them to chase you around correctly, on of the items is the Pop Shoes which are a really good defensive item. Aside from that, if you fight the birds (who turn out to be griffons), they have a chance of dropping Crystal Wing Shoes as a common-ish item and Water Mirrors as a rare item. Crystal Wings are also dropped by Wyverns in the wilderness near the Ice Megalith, and completely nullify all sonic attacks.

Actually beating the Griffons is fairly difficult, and I would recommend you learn the beast spells Regeneration (auto healing is invaluable in all the hard fights of the game, even though you can heal with LP it's better if you don't have to) and Guard Beast (a Beast/Stone spell that creates a magical second shield to block attacks) and equip some good shields (stone shields for example) to facilitate your survival, its not necessary to save your strength for the fight at the end of the mission so you can go full in. If you have a deflect weapon (Sword/Spear/Martial Arts and I think staves but not Axes or Bows), a Shield, and Guard Beast cast, that's three separate chances to nullify physical attacks. If you break sequence a little and get the Ice Lance before this adventure it helps a lot with your damage output against the scary ass birds.

You don't have to beat the Griffons for their cool rewards but its part of what makes the game fun.

-You can get a Bow-type Quell that nullifies Sonic attacks in the optional Laubholz dungeon. The dungeon has a lot of chances for other goodies too, but the undead there are pretty damn strong when it opens up.

>cont.

>> No.2062653

>>2062641
-You can also get Sonic protection from a piece of steel body armor called "Silver Chain"

This stuff is actually really good as far as Steel armor goes, and is probably the most useful kind. You want to wear this if you can't get Sonic protection by any other means.

-There is one other quell that nullifies sonic, but I'm pretty sure you have to beat the Sound Edelritter to get it, and you probably want sonic protection before you fight him.

A side note about Laubholz: Do not under any circumstances kill the monsters in the basement of the tower. The ones called "Anima Beast" that drop the Anima Crystal. Once they die the Lich will no longer respawn, and believe me, you want the Lich to respawn. If you do nothing else to get an extra boost for the last stage of the game Laubholz might be the only place left to power up, and the Lich the best source of high challenge to boost your spark rate for new techs. On top of that, the Lich can drop a piece of headgear that is immensely useful if you find the last boss too hard to defeat when you get to it.

Also don't break your Lake Robes or Titus Greaves if you get them. They're really really good. like one of the best possible equips. You can prevent durability loss by using actual learned spells instead of the built in magic on items.

SaGa is love, SaGa is life.
>>2062469
The Anons before me all gave valid points, if I may add something to their already good tips I'd tell you to be curious, this is a vital point of SaGa since the storytelling is pretty barebones and it requires you to interpret many things, especially in SF2 many, many things are implied most of the times while others where unfortunately simply left out, the game wants ou to explore every nook and cranny, both gameplay-wise and story-wise.
You'll end up being caught in sudden extreme sexual violence situations very often though, that can be frustrating to players new to SaGa, and that is coupeld with the fact that only a few titles allow you to "grind" efficiently and even if they do you must now where, how and when is the most useful time to grind and what you should grind.

Other than that, if you like challenges and complicated(read autistic) gameplay you'll be at home with SaGa.

Series is a bit of a stretch but there are a few games that are vaguely similar in concept.

The Last Remnant is basically a SaGa game, and is pretty good, an anon before suggested Dark Law for the SNES, recently, Grand Knights History for the PSP has a gameplay design that shares a few vague similarities with SaGa, such focus on formations and commands instead of pure stat growth and it has even a bit of posing like SaGa.

Other than that, Kawazu also helped with FF Crystal Chronicles but that's a more "traditional" JRPG series, if you want the Tabletop Kawazu there are really just a few games that have that style.

Minstrel Song is really easy. Stat reducing combos and self-sufficient healing will destroy literally every boss in the game. You can cripple 10FS Saruin, Death, and Shirach just by dropping their Agi, Dex, and Int. You can make one combo that does all of those at the same time. They even work better the more you decrease the enemy's agility, and since all the bosses have a combat pattern where they start with less dangerous attacks before moving up to more brutal attacks, you can have them perpetually weakened before they ever become a serious threat. You can get an ally that has a full set of stat reducing attacks that will combo with anything who can't get knocked out.

By the end of the fight even 10FS saruin is shooting single hit baby fishies with hydro blast.

The game also has pretty broken pacing.

Unlimited Saga is hard mode. Minstrel Song is autism intensified.

Exactly, that's also why White Rose/mesarthim are gay for her, she has the same power as Orlouge, that's why he calls her daughter, and that's also why his charm power doesn't work on her.

The only other one that sort of counts is in Blue's scenario, but it's not quite as different as Asellus's scenario. I don't want to give away too much, but you don't really get a different ending, it just changes some stuff, but technically you can affect major stuff in Blue's scenario. If you really want to know what happens, then here: if you lose (purposefully) the duel between Blue and Rouge, then you play the rest of the scenario as Rouge.

You get gud
Arakes only has pure STR on his side, give your characters shields and half of the fight is already done, maim him with martial arts and spear techs, keep your healing up and use magic protections if necessary
Byunei is the queen of chumps, you can cheese her with Gwayne if you want or just destroy her with good mace/axe techs, she can cause some nasty status effects but she has so little HP it won't really be much of a problem
Forneus main resource is Maelstrom and there's not much you can do about it, worse thing is if he gets enough water attacks in a row the field will be water based and he'll gets 999 HP back each turn and if you can't surpass this threshold you might as well reset the fight since not even savestate scumming will save your sorry ass, keep pumping fire magic and heal with Earth Heal to keep the field advantage, Spear and Bow techs are great, Id Break like no tomorrow in this fight.
Aunas is very similar to Flame Tyrant from RomaSaGa since he has an innate Fire Wall magic that renews each tun, meaning that direct melee attacks are out of the question, Bows, Magic and techs like Yo Yo are your best friend here, or you can sacrifice Yukidaruma if you feel like it.

Keep in mind that you're supposed to forge equipment regularly and abuse accessories with elemental resistances, Stat lowering Techs and magic, once you get all of those in good shape almost nothing will be able to stop you, except a few nasty monsters like Harid's Dragon Lord or a few demon types...

I liked Mblack 1. The fight with him was more cinematic than the others too.

I had a team of nothing but Mecs with 999 hp and ridiculous defense. That's probably not much of an accomplishment.

The Arcane quests were the best ones, especially Wutai and the Grail Card. Grail was hilarious, most terrifying sobriety test ever.

But Rune magic was just crazy good. Buffs in general were underrated in that game. And Stasis Rune? Yes please.

Time and Space Magic were both kind of useless except for that one crazy good Time spell. Reverse Gravity was pretty good if you got it early on though.

I loved Mystic Magic, Glass Shield was great, but Realm Magic had Vermilion Sand so it wins.

>Mblack 1, 2 or 3?

I can't remember well enough to say. I liked the one that did that crescent moon attack.

>Most notable accomplishment?

Getting Suzaku in my party. That was a very frustrating Easter Egg but when I found out about it I couldn't resist. Wasn't expecting Jotnar to be such a menace though.

Or every time I managed to kill the kraken at the bottom of the mansion in Owmi, especially if it was early game. Or delving into late-game areas at an early stage to plunder high powered gear.

Damn, now I'm gonna go back and play that game again, I miss it so much.

Genbu formation sucks, if you want a better chance at surviving, use tiger cave as it reduces all damage you take, and keep him from getting water element in the air so he wont regen his hp.

Really though, you just need some really strong techs, hes quite easy if you burst him down, if your characters have strong abilities and can survive like 4-6 turns you wont even need to heal before he dies.

>Losing to the Water Dragon
Anon, listen up, forget about tanking in SaGa, you can only tank if you have top tier equipment and abilities, and even then most endgame monsters will not give a shit about most of the things you whip up.

First of all forget Genbu, it's shit, do as>>2076302 says and use Tiger Cave, secondly, Water Dragon is like many battles a momentum battle, try to keep the momentum on your side, don't let the field become water based as it means that you'll already lose, learn some good waza and kick his ass.
Regarding your team, Sharl is one of the top tier if not the top tier character in RomaSaGa 3, give him a good lance and let him learn good waza, Boston is a glass cannon, he has abnormal melee potential but sucks hard regarding WP growth and defense so if you use him you should already be set on outdamaging whoever you fight, the Minstrel sucks a bit since he has no particular weakness but no particular talent either, you should replace him as soon as you can, Julian is a great main and I find it baffling you lost such a battle with him, Muse is a handful, she has great potential but starts out as the weakest character, you'll need quite some time for her to become as good as the others, she's pretty great though.

Lastly, you CAN run away, if you see you're losing or the battle didn't start well, retreat and try again.

SaGa can be a bit frustrating since it's pretty ruthless, but you just need to get the right mindset, keep on trying.

>> No.2076447

I guess I utterly failed at waza training. My strongest attack so far is Julian's dragon tail and it only does about 800 damage. I recently replaced Thomas for Sharl because he learned almost no spear waza despite me using him from the beginning. The bard learned 3 kung fu waza a while ago but hasn't got anything new for hours since then. I got rid of Monica because she also learned almost nothing. Only Muse progressed well with waza and magic though the bow moves aren't particularly powerful.

Dragon Tail should be more than enough for the Water Dragon, you should try to learn at least Charge for Sharl, that also helps you spark Spiral Charge which is pretty good, Boston should learn really good Kung Fu Waza in no time if you train a bit with all the aquatic type monsters down there, bows only shine later in the game when you'll be able to spark most of the really good Bow waza like Million Dollar, for now it will be great for Id Break and a few other specific waza like Arrow Rain or Sidewinder/Beast Hunt.
You should farm Fish Scales while you're there as they're really good against Forneus and the Water Dragon too, also, try to focus its melee attacks on one character as they can be quite devastating, Sharl could be a good counter tank if you manage to spark Windmill and set him up first in Desert Lance formation, but that's also a bit too relying on chances.

Fresh from the new sets of redesigns we have Asellus, with a huge, delicious butt.

Did you clear thieves Hideout yet? That is an excellent place to grind. If you have the evade for attacks the thieves use, you can grind like crazy with little problem.

Also, go to the Jungle, find the Fairy village and then the Fire Temple. Preferably the Fire Temple first before going to the Fairy Village as going back and forth from some screens can get you there at random.

Since you activated the Devil Lord quests, you can get the Fairy, who has 1 LP more than Muse, but is very good weapon wise (Has good levels in sword and bow)

Fairy joins after you unlock the temple on the map doesn't matter if you freed her beforehand or not. If you unlocked it before freeing her, she will join when you speak to her in the village.

>> No.2076606

I never used Sharl because Black with the Silver-Hand hitting twice with axe waza is far too delicious.

I always brought Ellen for kung fu too, she's great. You could also bring one of the Robins, it doesn't take much for them to get set up with some really solid foil waza.

>> No.2076623

Black is good but comes much later in the game and Sharl is also a very good natural Fire caster, Sharl with the Silver Hand also has all in all better stats than Black.
Axe waza are also terribly difficult to learn compared to Spear waza and most of the axes in the game are inferior to most of the spears you get.

I don't like Sharl I think he looks dumb and wastes an awesome piece of equipment.

Also Axes get Yo-yo or whichever waza that was, one of the broken multi-hit waza. Kinda hard to learn but I always found it really easy to get Black to glimmer at least one or two decent waza if not that one.

For fire techs I always used Katarina or Muse/Fat Robin, and Thomas.

Fullbright with earth, Black with water, Ellen with Wind.

or maybe I'm mistaken about how I used to play it.

Nora is better outside the party and Zo is a shitty game breaking trash character.

Black has more LP than Sharl and almost the same speed, which are the only two things that really end up mattering. That's not even the point though, regardless of how Sharl compares to Black, it's how a party with Sharl compares to a party without Sharl but with one character doing double damage all the time. You could just as well give the Silver Hand to Fat Robin or Julian and destroy things with Foil or Sword waza. I would never give anyone fire magic to use it for anything other than support spells, for which intelligence is not particularly meaningful. If I'm going to use magic to attack I almost always end up using Super Gravity exclusively against bosses, and Sun magic for multi-targets otherwise.

In terms of party building Thomas makes a perfectly good spear using replacement for Sharl. If I wanted an Axe user other than Black I'd have to use Ellen for it, and that's a bit of a waste when she's so fabulous at Kung Fu.

>Black has more LP than Sharl and almost the same speed
But lower Charm makes him weaker against certain nasty status effects, LP doesn't even matter much unless you are Zo or Ward and you want a wind Dragon God setup.
>You could just as well give the Silver Hand to Fat Robin or Julian
Fat Robin is only faster than Robin, it's not worth it, and Julian is just an inferior Harid in terms of swords.
>I would never give anyone fire magic to use it for anything other than support spells, for which intelligence is not particularly meaningful.
Sure, problem is Fire Magic is better than wind at support, Revive will always be more relevant than Dragon God since only a few characters can really pull it off, not to mention Fire Wall.
>If I'm going to use magic to attack I almost always end up using Super Gravity exclusively against bosses, and Sun magic for multi-targets otherwise.
Magic is shit for single target attacking as the JP pool is always more difficult to develop than a WP pool, if you want to deal damage with magic the best thing you can do is multi targeting with Water/Sun magic, Tiberius, Undine and Bai Mei Nyang are all better than Fullbright for this reason, the fact that Bai Mei is also very good with Kung Fu is beyond me but that's another matter entirely.
>In terms of party building Thomas makes a perfectly good spear using replacement for Sharl.
Yousei, Muse and Tatyana are all better Spear users than Thomas though. Sharl is very good because he's good at literally everything unlike Black who is mainly a physical attacker with little talents out of his natural Axe skills.

To be clear, I'm not telling you you're wrong, mind you, I just prefer having people that can manage to do more than one thing well opposed to pure attackers, Sharl saved me many more times than Black because he is more versatile than him.

Since RomaSaGa 2 enemies have LP in the game's data, granted that in some cases this mechanic was glitched out or removed.

RomaSaGa 2 for instance had a waza that allowed to emulate Kujinshi's Soul Steal but due to a glitch it's impossible to get the item that sparks it, and maybe it's better like this since 90% of enemies have 1 LP.
