As far as starting out, games like Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot 1-3 (especially 2 and 3 due to various refinements), CTR, Spyro 1-3, Castlevania Symphony of the Night are all good ones to start looking for, and usually not too expensive on an individual basis either. Also both Oddworld games if you don't have them or Steam or something already.

If you like JRPGs, there's some good ones to watch out for as well. That said, some can be rather expensive, so keep that in mind. A pair I really enjoy on the system are Wild Arms 1 and 2, and thankfully neither is too expensive either ($16-25 each where I live).

Looking at the list in this post >>2046823 will also likely prove useful for ideas.

If anything IN MY HUMBLE AND PERSONAL OPINION this game is one of the most overrated ps1 games.
The main character is very dull, the villain isnt memorable and the encounter system is ridiculously annoying (you start walking and a triangle above your head will start changing color hue once it hits red you battle). The CGI scenes and the battle system are good though but cant save this game from its dullness.

I'll agree with this partially. Lloyd is a bad FF bad guy clone, that's pretty true and we all know it. I found Dart dull except for a few places, but I think that might be half the fault of the localization. That was all over the place.

It's strange, but in it's defense I liked how LoD unashamedly hugged it's fantasy setting cliches tight as hell. There actually weren't very many RPGs that did that on PS1. Suikoden did it in a way and far better though.

Man do I wish Haschel was the protagonist sometimes. Based old guy.

>>2047081
I almost wish they put FF3 on the PS1, so someone could have all nine on the system. Just for novelty.

Speaking of which, the Namco Museum games are pretty GOAT. Damn tight ports, almost as good as MAME and in a couple cases better (Phozon etc).

If you were going to force me to get rid of all my ps1 games except... 10?

In no particular order...
Dino Crisis 2 (1)
Megaman Legends (2)
Final Fantasy Tactics (3)
Parasite Eve (4)
Final Fantasy 8 (5)
Resident Evil 3 (6)
Kings Field (7)
Strider 2 (8)
Castlevania Chronicles (9)
Megaman X4 (10)

Realistically you could replace Resident Evil 3 with any other Resident Evil (or Dino Crisis), Any of the X games on PS1 are decent (except maybe 6). Most people would pick SotN over Chronicles because they're casual as fuck. Legends could be easily replaced wtih legends 2. FFT has no substitute imo.

Gotta show some love for the armored core series. If you like mechs at all you'll love these games, tons of customization and really solid gameplay once you get over the learning curve for the controls.

They're all still pretty cheap, the original is my favorite but the two sequels have an arena mode that adds a lot to the game. Really an underrated series back in the day but I think they've gained a lot of love over the years.

Lloyd was a shit villain, yes. But everything in between is good. Lloyd isn't even IN the game for most of it.
Dart is boring as hell most of the time, also true. The rest of the party at least makes up for his slack. Him being forced in everything got old.
Random encounters are random encounters, and always suck horribly. This just had a timer.
Then again, this was the first game I played growing up, so nostalgia is a good bit of my reasoning.

Everything after the PSP Ridge Racer uses the new drift system.

I dig the new system, but it would be nice to be able to play another arcade Ridge Racer that was similar to the older style.

If you are a classic RR fan you should check out Ridge Racer 2 for the PSP (grab a European UMD or .iso if you're in the US), it features every track in the Ridge Racer series up until that time, even the arcade only Rave Racer.

Rage Racer was a lot of fun. You're right though, hard as hell. Designing my own logos was pretty awesome, I wish that would come back.

Honestly though, at the time I was really into playing it my roommate and I had like four TVs in our living room so I had the PS1 and PS2 hooked up to the TV's speakers, but the Xbox (which was filled with music) hooked up to the boombox speakers that were on either side of the TV. >no hardware floating point so polygons twitch and jerk as they snap from position to position in a grid like fashion
Assertion with needless commentary, the console operates on a 2D plane so drawing using floating point values would make little sense.

>affine texture mapping, so if there's a straight line in the textures it zig-zags and twitches with the polygons as the camera/model moves around
The same, you can't do perspective correct mapping if you don't have internal Z coordinates.

>no hardware texture filtering whatsoever
Cool, let's add something that costs a lot of money and will make debugging even worse and ruin 2D games.

The graphics were amazing for the time it came out, PC could barely draw the same graphics with Pentiums and the Saturn had the same (obvious) limitations.

>shitty ancient MIPS R3000A CPU from fucking 1988 running at 33MHz
33MHz on consumer eletronics in 1988? Wow. Bet they were cheap. Since the 3D is done by another processor 33MHz is more than enough for game logic.

>failure prone unit that wasn't fixed until later revisions, near the end of the console's life
Every CD drive is basically failure prone. Reading-heavy games like Crash Bandicoot only accelerated that failure, but at least you could ask for a new unit. Anyway, this complaint is legit.

>Memory Card
PS1 didn't have a big ass cartridge slot to save your games. 128KB also cut costs.

PS1 was a great console BECAUSE of its hardware, which was the easiest to develop for and had the least bottlenecks, unlike N64's only mapping through texture cache, or the Saturn only being able to draw quads and having two processors. That post is just bitter complaining for the sake of it.

>> No.2071367

>>2071285

Not retro but PS2 was a worse clusterfuck than N64 and Saturn together, and it still had a great catalogue thanks to Sony's marketing.

PS1 was not good spec-wise, the only advantadge it had over N64 or Saturn was the video codec (I think onlythe CDi had a good video codec, all other consoles with CD from that time had rather poor video capabilities).
Sure from a developer's point of view, PS1 was easier to develop for (although with lots of limitations too, but yeah,e asier than N64 or Saturn), but we're talking as users, not developers.
And yessss, PS1 had a great catalogue, but it isn't the best console specs-wise.

NES was the best console of 3rd gen, but we all know Master System was better in hardware.

It was as good as it needed to be. It didn't do arcade perfect ports, no. But the system could do some things more efficiently than its competitors, being "good" spec-wise is more relative than factual.

>but we're talking as users, not developers.
As a user you're not supposed to give a damn about the specs. At least not on /vr/ when console wars aren't supposed to be endorsed.

>NES was the best console of 3rd gen, but we all know Master System was better in hardware.
Yeah but the NES is a console from 83, and it featured a heavy use of memory mappers in cartridges so that it could even scroll the screen while the MS from 86 did everything on its own.

>Assertion with needless commentary, the console operates on a 2D plane so drawing using floating point values would make little sense.
All GPUs translate 3D objects to 2D space, which is the framebuffer.
Using floating point numbers would give better polygon coordinate precision instead of rounding up/down the values, which gives the twitchy polygon effect.

>The same, you can't do perspective correct mapping if you don't have internal Z coordinates.
This wouldn't be a problem if Sony hadn't been incompetent with their choice in GPUs.

>Cool, let's add something that costs a lot of money and will make debugging even worse and ruin 2D games.
Who said it had to be forced on 2D games?
You do realize texture filters can be turned on and off right?

Remember we're talking about the PS1 and Sony's incompetence, not the N64 and Nintendo's incompetence or the Saturn and Sega's incompetence.

>33MHz on consumer eletronics in 1988? Wow. Bet they were cheap.
Not really, but by 1994 they were pretty cheap.

>Since the 3D is done by another processor 33MHz is more than enough for game logic.
Considering the CPU also had to handle T&L, rotations, etc along with the game logic, not so much. T&L wasn't available on GPUs till the late 90s though, so you had to have a good CPU to handle T&L.

>PS1 didn't have a big ass cartridge slot to save your games.

Burn your games at the lowest speed your drive supports (For me it was 4x). I discovered this through trial and error. Anything over 8x doesn't really work, and few drives go below 8x writing speed. If yours is one of the ones that don't go below 8x, look around for an older IDE CD burner and try it, I use an "HP CD-writer plus" from an old HP pavilion and it burns perfect PS1 CDs.
Also, don't use shitty cheap CD-Rs, grab some Verbatim branded CD-Rs. (I got 5 for around $3 from Office Depot I think)

not really most 2D fighting games play better on the Saturn but yeah 3D fighters were also good on the PS1 like Tekken and Tobal

No warcraft 2? That was a very good port.

I personally recommend Armored Core and Gran Turismo 1.

Wild arms 2 is good. Some of the exposition is mistranslated so a walkthrough is necessary.

Game Informer had a pretty great walkthrough for it.

Quick question, I wanna play my PS1 games again, but all I have is a PS2, should I just play the games on the PS2? Or is the quality worse?

If you have an unchipped PS2 then not only are the games are virtually identical (save for a dozen unsupported titles) but you can enable fast disc speed and texture filtering which looks amazing, but they both might break a few titles, so if you're having problems disable the disc speed boost and the texture filtering for some 2D titles.

I never knew the PS2 had these options?
Is it just in the bios in the beginning?

At the main screen press triangle then select Playstation Driver and press triangle again.

These settings are reset every time you turn off the console so be sure to remember enabling them any time you want.
