This is one of those games I'd love to be on 3DS virtual console which imo is still always lacking in one area or another. Handheld is so convenient and I hate to be constricted and other times I do like sitting in front of the tv. Thoughts?

I use to love this game but it emulation of it is pretty shitty. It only looks good at native resolution and even then there are still glitches (unless you use a low level graphics plugin).

Also the fact that you could skip levels in the level select it fucking retarded.

This is one of the main probles with the game design. On story mode, you're only allowed to play 6 levels, you can only choose 1 level (of 4) per page.

So there is a total of 24 levels in the game, you can play them all on trial mode, but to unlock them, you have to replay story mode over and over. I mean, I get what they tried to do. It's like a sort of "choose your own adventure", each time you play it, you can choose different levels so the story is different. But to many people, this game seemed like it only had 6 levels. It seemed too easy and too short.

And it is probably too easy and too short, but not as it initially may seem.

Otherwise I like the game's controls and although I'd prefer a Yoshi's Island level design, this one emphasizes exploration, sometimes the backtracking can be tiresome though, and having to snif every inch of the screen, while funny at first, also gets old.
I really like the graphics and how smooth the game is, even with dozens of enemies on the screen, it remains at 60fps.

Why do we always have to shit up Yoshi's Story threads?

How long until hating on this game gets popular enough to get a contrarian reaction and people start appreciating it more?

If this game wasn't a Yoshi game and starred some other original character, it would be remembered as a sweet little platformer from the 5th gen that was overlooked

I haven't played it lately so I can't confirm, but many sources indicate that it is 60fps. F-Zero X was 60fps, and since Yoshi's Story is mostly "2D" it doesn't seem outside of the realm of possibility.

>Bangai-O has slowdowns when there's like 100/200 projectiles and enemies on screen

It is actually much more often. Almost every time you use your special attack it will go down. Sometimes its just a small drop, but sometimes it is very noticeable

>> No.2044427

>>2044423

Most of the times the game runs smoothly though. It's only very noticeable when you use the special attack, which can fire up to 100 missiles at a time, so yeah.

Anyway my point was that the game can achieve 60fps.

>>2044420

F-Zero has very simple polygon work and almost no backgrounds in order to be able to run at 60fps, but yeah I was forgetting about that game, it's incredibly fast and fluid.

That is partly the reason I dislike the Yoshi games really. I cannot get beyond it. Yoshi is just such a bad character. He looks stupid, he sounds stupid, and his characteristics are stupid. Ability to eat everything, ability to birth what he eats, then that horrible double jump that feels so ineffective since it pulls you down first. Those three characteristics in turn birthed the most tedious puzzles, not hard but fucking tedious. The throwing mechanic is fucking shit and takes forever. The jumping mechanic has such a small impact on height that messing up is very easy. And I have just always hated the eating thing, for real, a fucking DINOSAUR using his tongue to pull in pray? What the fuck? I would have preferred a chainchomp animation or some shit to it, and also think it shouldn't be an integral part of the game, but a secondary option to just jumping on the enemy. And also the level design in Yoshi Story is pretty bad. There are hardly any obstacles from start to finish. But that is just me.

What I hated about replaying the storymode to reach levels is there was very little reward for doing the same level more than once over.
Too many of the levels were slow paced and calm and didn't have any real secrets in them.

The mechanic of gaining extra points for getting the same fruit in a row, and having it possible to get nothing but those melons also slowed the game down even more for experienced players- Especially when the secret fruit was found through sniffing and ground pounding.

>If it wasn't a nintendo game no one would even remember it.

I think it's the other way around, people only say it's a shit game because they expected more from Nintendo. If this was a game by a small dev, it would be remembered, maybe not as much as Yoshi's Story, but also not as negatively.

I'll say the game physics and controls are pretty good, and visually it's deligthful.
The problem is the game design itself, as already stated. having to play story mode over and over to unlock levels.

>> No.2045873

>>2045867
The whole game design is the problem, not just the level selection. Collecting fruits to advance the level is fucking retarded. I mean, if the fruits would have been scarce it would make sense but they filled the levels so much that you can finish a level with only seeing half of it, you're not even given the option to continue the level but instead experience some kind of fruit orgasm.

This is a total turn off and a completely unsatisfying experience for any kind of player but toddlers, who should love this cheap way of advancing levels.

Adding to that comes the retarded level design itself which is incredibly unfocused and weird to support the fruit hunting wholeheartedly.

I think it makes it more interesting and accessible for everyone, which I believe is what they were going for.

You could just grab all the fruits you see an advance, but you get a better score if you get only melons which does actually make the game more challenging as you can't eat other fruits to refill your health and you actually have to track them down and do minigames perfectly to get them.

It's the same with being able to pick any level you want. Some are very easy and some are actually harder (though still not -that- hard).

I think it's an interesting approach to difficulty that bypasses selecting a difficulty off of the title screen.
