Can we discuss Landstalker /vr/?
It's probably my all time favorite game, bought a PSP for the remake that simply vanished.

Great game in the style of Golvellius and Knight Lore (mostly linear progression/geography + isometric action-platforming). Quite a challenge later on, but nothing you can't handle with planning and maximum EkeEkes to revive you upon expiring. Yoshitaka Tamaki, Kenji Orimo, Shinya Nagasaki, and Motoaki Takenouchi...this collaboration will never happen again.

Landstalker was my favourite game too as a child. I still hear the catchy soundtrack in my ears; the music won't leave my head.

The part I enjoyed most was the dungeon beneath Mercator, where various riddles had to be solved. Not to forget the unique design of the towns and their people, the minigames (athur's casino and greenpiece) and the cutscene in the castle that unfortunately had been cut out in the PAL version.

There was only little I disliked about the came, appart from some redudant stuff like the blue ribbon, the fairy town and Mir. When this faggot duke appeared the first time in the game, the developers unintentionally revealed him to be the villain by making him draw his sword, when he 'jumped' the stairs in the castle ( which he does when you fight him later).

Such a pity there has never been an official sequel or a similar games, appart from ladystalker, time stalker and dark saviour, which might be good, but do not seem to be the same glorious, nostalgic feeling I have, when I replay Landstalker.

The only good thing about about Time Stalkers is the cameos who join your party.
There's Pyra from Shining in the Darkness, Yogurt from Shining Force, Nigel from Landstalker and other characters I'm not that familiar with.
If you value character interaction and development over gameplay, then I guess it can fun.

A lot better puzzles than Zelda, honestly. The amount of tricky jumps and lateral thinking you have to do, combined with quick reflexes, make the game really stand out from other zelda clones.

Alundra is similar in this regard. Both games are classics.

Dark Savior is ok, and I like the world and atmosphere, but the game is but ugly, feels like it drops to 8fps if there are more than 4 polygons on screen, and the platforming not nearly as satisfying. And the combat was pretty tacked-on.

Again, I sorta liked the game, but I lost motivation near the end of Scenario 2 (silver castle) because the slow platforming sections along with the tedium just got to me.

Then again, the plot of the game sort of seems to spin into nowhere towards the end of nearly all of its parallels.

It would also be a pretty bullshit way to frame the game since it is so inconsequential in terms of the larger game's plot. I mean yeah, there is that one moment you fight the zombie kid in the tunnel, but I don't think that's the single driving event around the entire game. It's like a rough version of Bioshock Infinite. Along with all the problems that exist in Infinite's storyline. Though better written than Infinite!

garian talks about dreams a lot throughout the whole game but if you pay attention to one part of the dialogue it says something like: "it is said that whoever gets carbon frozen will forever endure endless nightmares. it's a fate worse than death"

now if you think about how the game is structured it's just and endless loop. everytime after the credits roll you "wake up" from a nightmare in the ship and the game rolls all over again.

also, after lance dying on the island(he was part of the bounty hunter team, garian killed him by accident, he "coincidentally" got revived by the island mad scientist) garian goes on a rant saying something like "what's wrong with this island? why do all these horrors happen here?" sugesting that there might be more to it than mere coincidence

If there's one thing I give Landstalker credit for, it's just how good the puzzles are. Surprisingly tough for a 16bit game. Like the one puzzle (in the lake shrine?) where you have to throw a block onto a switch and in the split second the door opens, move through. That type of twitch-reflex never happens in Zelda games. Creepy.

At least 'kids of tommorow' is yesterday's kids of today - and that is you. Yesterday, today was tomorrow and tomorrow, today will be yesterday.

Anyway, at that time, communism must have begun to erode. How and why did they implement measures to keep people from learning English (and you learnt it anyway? You don't live in North Korea, do you?

It's probably hard to play with just a keyboard. The game's isometric controls necessitate you using diagonal controls instead of cardinal directions.

It is tricky to get used to on a genesis controller. I'd imagine that it'd be downright awkward without something similar.

It's really not, Diagonals are so easy to press on the MD controller that it should be second nature to press down-left to walk down-left by the time you're through the second room.
Now, if we were talking about a Playstation D-pad things may be different, but nobody should have trouble with Landstalker controls on a Mega Drive or Saturn-like D-pad.

Good game, but fuck isometric view, fuck those retarded perspective-less jumps, and fuck those controls.

I wouldn't have had a problem with the controls if they simply made it so you press diagonals to move in the corresponding direction. But instead, they have this weird system where up/down move along the axis and left/right rotate you so that up/down now move along another axis. Fuck that, I mostly played through by bunnyhopping because for some reason I find it easier to change directions while doing it.

>if they simply made it so you press diagonals to move in the corresponding direction
But that's exactly how it is. Sure the four cardinal directions move you weirdly, but why would it even occur to you to use them when you can just move diagonally by pressing diagonally? I don't understand you.

I think if Nigel had a shadow, things would be a bit more manageable. Now, I don't think the jumps are all that bad once you start to see how the perspective works, but it would still be an improvement.

Life Stocks are important, yeah, but there are a lot of them so you can miss one if it means doing a lot of bullshit.

This is a little embarrassing (first time playing here), but I just discovered the warp tree thing outside of Mercator. This will make getting around easier. I just got the Axe Magic.

I'm 9 hours in. It doesn't feel like there is a super lot left to the game (fought Duke, got transported back to Mir's Tower, here I am).

No.

Timestalkers/Climax Landers is a clusterfuck that doesn't apply to anything. It's kind of strange and possibly charming, everything about it is odd. It's some sort of RPG or roguelike almost, but not a very good one. In fact maybe it's outright bad and not fun.

but some people like it.

The developers of the game themselves seem to think it's a failure however.
