Shmup recommendation thread.

If there's co-op, say so.

>Life Force

>Essentially Gradius with co-op and some top-down stages, I believe. May or not be a version of Gradius II? I'm not sure.

It's Salamander, Gradius II was a separate arcade game. Actually present in the PSP Gradius Generations (J) port.

Border Down (DC) - 2003
Gradius V (PS2) - 2004
Under Defeat (DC) - 2006

I know DC is considered retro, but honestly DC probably shouldn't be. There are games on the DC that released after some of the games on PS2.

There are dipshits that still release stuff for the megadrive too, does that make it not retro?

Also I think shmups themselves should be classified as a retro genre, save for shit like astebreed and some other doujin shmups, the genre doesn't really innovate anymore and seems stuck in the past, why should a genre that hasn't really changed since the early 90s be considered modern? Just because of its release date?

You can say the same thing about the Super Nintendo, which had official releases into 2000 in Japan.

Regardless, I think shooters are /vr/ by nature, like pinball.

It's a loose adaptation of Salamander for arcade. On a related note, Gradius II for Famicom is in the same vein, using the arcade game as a basis for a great Famicom game. Never released in NA for some reason.

R-Type 3 is best
