So is using patterns cheating or just playing it right?

I say playing it right. Otherwise you're just flailing around hoping you get lucky and finish a board

Patterns are not cheating, you have to right to think like a computer to play against a computer which is determined to stoop as low as you to win. Thing is ghosts are (mostly) predictable, whilst you, in their eyes, are not.

To quote the sage and crystal clear wisdom of Joel West:

"The man broke the spirit of the game [by employing a pattern]. That's not a Berzerk player, that's a monkey. You can teach a monkey how to play a certain number of rooms but you cannot teach a man how to play Berzerk."

The real question is can we teach a monkey to play Quake. This is important.

Playing it right. The game is designed to make use of ghost movements and that's exactly what a pattern is; manipulating and taking advantage of the ghosts' AI

Patterns are an inferior way of playing pacman. It surprises me that no one here in /vr/ has mentioned the Pac-man dossier.

>In 1999, Billy Mitchell of Hollywood, Florida became the first person to obtain a perfect score of 3,333,360 at Pac-Man, eating every possible dot, energizer, ghost, and bonus on every level without losing a single life in the process. But perhaps what is most amazing is the fact he can play without using any memorized routines widely known as “patterns”. Instead, he relies on his familiarity with how each ghost behaves as it moves through the maze, using that knowledge to keep Pac-Man one step ahead of his enemies at all times.

So basically he knows the pattern of the ghosts?

>> No.2032852

Yes..we are all familiar with Billy Mitchell

Not that it ever was top secret stuff if you actively played pacman. Once you notice a distinct behavior, it's only natural for you to take advantage of it because you don't want to lose. If you play the game "hoping" you don't lose then you will, eventually. Is this the superior way?

That's not even the original art. This is what the very first machines looked like before it was renamed to Pac-Man.

OP's Pac-Man image is a slightly more refined version of this. I say that's true Pac-Man.

So we shouldn't discuss anything aside from when consoles and games were released? Damn near everything else aside from that is subjective.

>> No.2034131

>>2033254
Good point here. I've never been a fan of looking in guides before you finish a game. For later playthroughs I guess it's okay though.
