We'll have it someday. Somehow, it will be found and released, and with a little bit of extra work, it will finally be complete.

We won't have it because it never existed as a game. They made demos of 4 or 5 different engines (not even counting the Nights one) split on 3-4 different platforms. Executives only saw demos which weren't up to date and ordered the otherwise finely progressing engines to be halted; development rebooted on different engines due to executive meddling, and so on. Plus Sega themselves had no clue on what hardware to use anyway (they tried getting a new console out already by 1995 using NVidia hardware).

We're getting Sonic Boom.

According to wikipedia, Chris Senn is the main level designer for it, so it's as close as we'll ever get without a leak.

I'm pretty sure Sonic Boom will kill any desire anyone still has to play this thing.

I don't regret the fact that we got Nights instead of Sonic Xtreme. Fuck Sonic fanboys and revisionists who won't let that game go. It's almost as bad as the people still obsessed with RE1.5 when everyone involved in the game's production said it was going to be shit.

I can't understand the appeal of this game at all. it just looks like a jumbled up mess of platforms that doesn't really look like anything and also looks like a pain in the ass to navigate.

Sonic in 3D what I've wanted for a long time, and Sega's execution of it has never been good. As much as i want to see a point to it, Sonic Xtreme is the last possible way that I could ever see it happen and actually be good.

Only in front of you, and that's when Sonic isn't directly in your way as you move forward. When moving left and right you only get a few blocks worth of distance ahead of you to tell what's coming in time. It wouldn't work well at all given any kind of high-speed motion going left or right. I know that Sonic isn't as much about speed as the common perception these days would make you believe, but this camera setup would just make it a pain to navigate levels.

>> No.2023712

>>2023607
You're not cutting off any of your vision by adding fisheye, dipshit. It only gives it that unique rounded look. If anything, you can see MORE of what's in front of you, since it gets wrapped around more.

I appreciate your diagram, but while I may agree in theory, the actual execution based on screenshots has more in common with your non-fisheye example. The camera is zoomed too far inward. Your example would require the left and right ends of the level track to be visible, while the xtreme screenshots I've seen have the camera too zoomed in for that to work out. As a result, what should be gained in the fisheye effect is lost, and what's left over is the bizarre distortion of level geometry.

I remember reading awhile back that someone (supposedly who you're referring to) wanted to complete the game.

This was some time ago. Evidently it never came to pass.

I hope he hadn't died and reason got to him before then.

>> No.2024771

I would think that this game just suffered from the same kind of troubles that a lot of other games probably had to go through.

But Sega takes mismanagement to an entirely new fucking level.

They couldn't have shit the bed more thoroughly in the mid to late 90's if they had tried.

>> No.2024810

I think AXSX is the closer we will get but as far as I remember it was aiming to be quite faithful. Also it had input from Chris Senn didn't it? It's strange AXSX is only mentioned once in this thread. I didn't know about the hi-rez textures, I'd rather have ones equal to the ones in the Saturn.

Also, Sonic Lost Word took uncommented inspiration from Sonic X-Treme. In X-Treme not only you had the fish eye lens, but some slopes you could go changed the rotation of the entire level. I think it would've been a fine game and very interesting if released.
