2014331 No.2014331 [Reply] [Original]

I'm in Japan for the next two weeks.

What should I buy?

I already picked up a GB game called "Kaeru no tame Kagami wa Naru" that I've seen talked about a bit on here.

I can read Japanese so anything that's good I want to play! ^_^

I have no idea your interests, so you are the best to decide that.
I myself have been going to Japanese auctions and buying old PC98 games thanks to retro Japanese PC topics kindling my love for them.
Also recently bought SMT 1, 2, and IF.
But really, buy what you like.

The most logical thing to buy would be things that are either hard/expensive to find online or expensive to ship. For example, you can find a Saturn for a few hundred yen in a flea market and carry it home vs paying many times that to buy online and have it shipped. If you got that game for a fraction of what you could find it for online then it's also a good choice even if it wouldn't cost so much to ship.

As others have said, it really just depends on what you're interested in. That said, do be aware of various systems having region locks. If you're going to pick up some PS1 (or PS2 games) for example, it might be worth it to look into a Japanese PS1 or PS2 to play them if you don't already have some way of doing so. If not you'll have some good games but no way to play them on a western system (without having to go through workarounds and such).

Anyhow, since you seem to be able to read Japanese, you might want to consider games that are generally pretty darn expensive/hard to find in English. A fair amount of older RPGs, like Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Lufia 2, Tales of Destiny and Eternia, Suikoden II, etc, can be quite pricy in the west, so it might be in your interest to see if you can find cheaper Japanese copies if you're fluent enough to read them correctly. And in general a lot of SNES games have gotten pretty pricy out here these days if that's a system you're interested in picking stuff up for, so it might be worth considering how much stuff for it in general goes for here compared to out there. Various games that never got localized (and sadly in some cases, some that haven't even seen finished fan translations yet) might be worth looking into as well.

Also, admittedly stepping away from /vr/ stuff here for a second, if you have interest in the Tales series, consider picking up Tales of Destiny 2, Rebirth, and Destiny: Director's Cut as those PS2 games never got brought west. In particular Destiny DC is considered a great remake of Tales of Destiny on the PS1, and takes the rather clunky combat of the original version (not shitting on Destiny PS1 by any means as I'd say it's pretty understandable for it to feel like that for being only the second game in the series, but it's certainly not as fluid as even the next few entries after it, like Phantasia PS1 or Eternia) and gives it some of the best 2D combat in the entire series.

I think people have a fantasized idea of Japan's retro scene. I don't think with the amount of game shops online and offline in Japan that you'll be able to walk in and just find stacks of rare games for mere dollars.

>> No.2016413

>>2016108
I don't think so. People who actually find expensive games for buck know it doesn't happen often and only in places where the seller doesn't know what he has like a flea market or shop that doesn't specialize in vidya. Most other people are in full out denial that prices in Japan are a fraction of what they paid on ebay so will never underestimate prices. I don't think there are a lot of people who have unrealistically low expectation of Japanese prices.

Getting $1 games in nipland isn't going to happen. Just like here things have their own supply/demand issues, and there are games that cost absurd amounts for no apparent reason other than "dudebro-san said it was cool". The main difference is rpg's, small runs and high amounts of latent interest has caused almost all of them to skyrocket in price in the US. But in nipland, there were adequate amounts printed, and they're not really anything special like they are here. However, thinking you'll be able to buy them for mere quarters or something is plain wrong. you should still expect a minimum of $10-15 for major titles, even at the cheapest of stores. Although like I said, when compared to the $50-200 you'd be charged in the US, its a steal.
You dont go to japan for cheap vidya, you go to japan for easy access to uncommon vidya. Saturn, TG-16, and RPG's are generally the focus of vacationing trooper.

Awesome! So those 10 boxes of games I bought for a buck or less earlier this year were the last in the entire country and are now worth at least 10 times what I paid?! Gotta run guys. Gonna cash in my games and fill the tub with cash.

In the big cities, sure. But not out here in the relative country. The most I've ever paid for a SuFami game is 900 yen for LTTP, followed by 500 for Super Metroid. Yoshi's Island, DKC, F-Zero, Mario Kart, Starfox, Chrono Trigger, and the like can be had for under 300 yen at my local Hard-Off. My SuFami console itself cost me a whopping 100 yen plus another 200 yen for a controller. I rarely pay more than 100 yen for a Famicom game and I've collected dozens for 50 yen apiece. I pay a king's ransom of ~300 yen apiece for N64 games, and I've gotten packs of 4-6 assorted Game Boy games for 1-200 yen apiece. Life's good.

That's true actually, if you are going to Super Potato try their story in Ikebukuro some of the prices there might be half of the ones in the Akihabara store.

I wasn't giving advice sperglord, I was commenting that yes, some people have grandiose ideas of japans game market.
And yes, there will be exceptions to game prices. I myself got Snes harvest moon for $1 at a garage sale once. But that doesn't mean I can expect to pay the same price next time I see it at a garage sale.
similarly, you will find cheap vidya, even for $1 or less in japan, you might even find those $1 games in the middle of tokyo in a book-off or something. But that doesn't mean you should expect ALL games to be $1 or less.

>Thanks for the tip sport. I had no idea I was doing it all wrong.
if you flew to japan with the expectation of finding all the games you wanted and then some, neatly displayed and all priced for ¥50 each, then you are actually doing it wrong.
In general, going to japan just for inexpensive vidya is wrong.

Well the market is genuinely cheaper.
I bought a sealed Biohazard 2 as a gift for my bro and I think it was basically like 12 dollars. (What, 1200 yen?). Consider that a Sealed Resident Evil 2 people would be demanding 100+ for it.

That's something I find weird. How some places charge different prices based on what console the game's for. One place I pay 100 for a N64 cart but they want 200 for a FC cart. Another wants 300 for a N64 cart and 200 for a SFC cart. There's a place that sells everything for a flat price of 50. Another sells DC/Saturn for 100 but wants 200 for PS2. I guess that's just what you get when people aren't price fixing reseller scum.
