He thinks they're soulless imitations of retro games plus he totally sucks at them because what few important innovations that HAVE happened completely escape him. e.g. the mouselook comic. He gets beat every time if he tries to play online multiplayer because a huge element of his psychological game is lost. Analog sticks are a novelty to him, mainly for playing Knights. Buying a game and not getting anything but a limited license to download it would seem like a joke to him especially over dialup etc etc.

>>1967862
He obviously smokes (way too big a part of arcade culture not to) and chances are those big fat "cigars" aren't always tobacco. He likely does use the "Winners don't..." as a go-to phrase though, including about drugs but he doesn't consider whatever he does to be using drugs. He's the kind of person those messages are warning about, the target of the messages, and and advocate of them all at the same time paradoxically.

I personally advocate a healthy balance for /vr/ of emulation for convenience, mobility and variety along side real hardware for respect, authenticity and texture but /vr/-tan definitely plays exclusively on real hardware. As a fictional character he definitely has an MSX Turbo R and boxed copy of Illusion City or any other particular title no matter how rare, obscure or expensive and mobility isn't an issue since he can pull a Super Nintendo and CRT right out of his hammerspace when necessary and he knows exactly where to find the old dilapidated arcade in every neighborhood that's been there since before you were born and you never knew about.

While mentioning 2D "retro" indies...

Right. He doesn't hate what he doesn't understand he just doesn't understand it. Unlike /v/ he's under no illusions that shit should make sense, he's completely satisfied that he has mastered his doman and things outside his realm are met with bemusement at worst - sometimes full-on excitement, although probably for wrong (/vr/-related) reasons.

Good thing I got a chance to actually try out out beforehand at a friend's place.

How about you just fix it when you guys get around to making Ouya 2? Then we're good.

And personally, I prefer to use my Genesis controller for emulation, so I'm more used to the 6-button layout, but I doubt you guys would be willing to alter your setup this drastically. Would be a nice alternative to have, though.

Some of the music he listens to might have influenced it however, and to him that is the "real thing", just as an emulator can never replace a real console.

It is of my opinion that /vr/-tan doesn't listen to it because he is personification of zeitgeist from those decades while Mitch Murder and others are product of late '00 and early '10 (god this feels so weird to write).

The thing I find funniest about it is that when idiots get mad over that shit, they don't even realize that they never would have even seen said game/controller/whatever IRL.

>> No.1977528

I think you misunderstand, it has nothing to do with the fact that I'd never see that one, but the decreased the total number by 1. SOME things are widely available, not all, and if that shit keeps being popular, what will be left in, I dunno, fifty years? It'll be harder and harder to find them, and they just toss guts and shit out when they could be used to repair stuff down the line. What about retro game enthusiasts two generations from now? Sure, there will be less of them, but I'd like to think they'd be able to get hard copies of the stuff they're into.

As someone who looks for vintage hotrod stuff while yardsaleing I can tell you it's not challenging to find parts. It's damn near impossible. If you see a 32 roadster I can guarantee it's fake. 9/10 are. Very few go fast parts have survived. A rusted to death body is worth $1000s alone. That's the big stuff. So much of the parts are repro now. Some are done amazingly well while others are china crap.

Now we just need a name for the guy. I mean, /a/ has /a/nons; /v/ are /v/irgins; /tg/ came up with perhaps the greatest name all, fa/tg/uys; what is /vr/? There are probably no one or two words that would work, we'll have to come up with an amalgamation of some kind that is still instantly recognizable. /b/tards isn't a real word, but it's instantly recognizable as an allusion or bastardization or what have you of "retards". If we have some esoteric pun or word combination it won't work. Come on folks, whats our name? We have to remember our name. /vr/, /vr/, it rhymes with ___.

I can see this one only if it's an especially long RPG and he just got near the end. I haven't tapped much into retro RPGs because I don't have the patience, so I don't know any examples of what the longest ones are; I'd go with almost completing the Pokédex in RBY, but /vr/ probably didn't get too into Pokémon agewise.

If it wasn't too taxing to beat, he'd likely just shrug it off. It would have to be just right gamewise and timingwise, where he was so close to beating it.

What I meant was the irrational hatred for good games. There's really no more shovelware per capita of sports games than any other genre with the exception of licensed games.

So, speaking of, gamers hate licensed games because they're really mostly crap, not because they hate movies/shows/whatever. Yet for some reason many hate legitimately good sports games because they hate sports.

Furthermore, the whole "why not go outside and play" argument falls apart for most sports that aren't soccer or basketball (in North America). I want to play football - am I to expect I can just wrangle another two dozen people with gear and a field just like that? Can I go outside and play ice hockey in May?

Also the idea of laser-firing dragons is only cool to some people; sports are cooler to others because maybe they think that shit is for children.

Like say, something mildly amusing. My suggesttion is a constantly changing T-shirt for the comic. Every time you see him in the next panel, he always has a different design or logo on the front peeking through his overshirt/coat, like a "!", "Nintendo", Sega", PlayStation Logo, "SegaNet", "AM2", "Battletoads", Ghostbusters logo, et cetera...

But, in the end I think he'd find it 'radical,' if not for just the fact that he can play old handheld games as well as other retro games.

I think it would be in character for him not to dismiss or disown new technology, but rather have him be confused by it. Like he's handling gadgets from the far future, or using them incorrectly or like one would use a similar thing in the 80s or 90s without getting the full modern use out of it. This way, he'd be quick to loose interest in, say, a 3DS, and suggest something like a Link Cable Game Boy match instead.

I was thinking the same thing about being confused by modern technology because he is likely so out of touch with the modern world. But, not for lack of interest rather than for wanting to have his fill of all games in the era he still lives in. When time comes the more modern games will become retro and he would move on, but still be behind.

Also, I had a comic strip in mind. But, I don't know how to draw. Basically it'd have /vr/ and /v/. /vr/ would find /v/'s 3DS gathering dust and out of curiosity tries to play games on it with /v/ having to explain and /vr/ not getting it. Like

/v/: You know you can play those old games you like.

/vr/: Really? How do I insert the cartridges?

/pol/ would try to red pill the little girl, and casually says "nigger" by the time her mother gets home

/s4s/ would probably end up playing calvin ball with her or something

/ic/ would get her to eventual burn all the drawings she had on the fridge while she's crying, and /i/ would be drawing dicks on the wall

After a while they play something else like Street Fighter.

They later order pizza, and drink Shasta Orange soda. They play some co-op Super Mario World, and when /vr/-tan dies and Lily's turn starts, he sees she passed out on the couch.

When Lily's mom gets home he's playing on his game boy color that has the flash light attachment.

So if we're going to get /jp/s janitors to let us actually talk to her I think we're going to need some /vr/-tan pics in the visual novel style. I'm thinking either Snatcher (too casual?) or Yu-No (Too Yotsuba-B?)

If some drawfag will make a few I can fill in the text boxes or even if we can just get some charming/sincere pics of him done in the VN style? I can post some source material if need be.

That is if the drawfags even support this endeavor - and you guys are obviously the most important element.

I'm pretty charming, especially as a character like /vr/-tan I was starting to crack their shell before the janitors deleted the second one I tried this morning. Something about RP not being allowed that's why I say we'd need some visual novel style /vr/-tan images that I can shoop some fake text into and act like I'm there to be 100% on-topic in my posts. Comparing out fake VN to real ones, demonstrating how we know our VNs - retro ones anyway.

That's how I'd steal her heart if she was a real girl. I dunno if it's worth being so smooth just for -tan shenanigans though.
