Sega CDX, but actually outputs a much higher sound quality.

Sega really was a complete mess of a company.
They should have simply released a Saturn which played Genesis and CD games, skipped over the 32x and waited for the real Saturn launch.

>> No.1977504

>>1977478
Backwards compatible Saturn would've been impossible, it would've held back the system so much that it would've been insane. And this is before adding the clusterfuck of a design that was the Sega CD.

They could've done a Megadrive Converter Cart for the Saturn though - it would've been a literal Megadrive-on-a-lock-on-cart, outputting the screen to the Saturn. I think it would've needed an extra power supply though.

Giga Drive? I heard M2 talk about it, It's close to the Sega Saturn in terms of hardware but uses 1 68030 chip rather then 2 SH-2 chips, weaker video hardware (but supports triangle unlike the Saturn) but more powerful sound hardware, no DRam but can play Genesis & Sega CD games through a BC chip and uses it's own 32X adapter (no extra AC adapter and no video link cable as the pins used for ground for Master System mode have been replaced with the needed audio/video in & out pins for the Giga Drive 32X.

It would of been called the Sega Jupiter in North America.

Here are the Jupiter's specs.

Main CPU: 1 Motorola 32-Bit 68030 at 33MHz, can be clocked down to 7.67MHz (7.61 for Pal units) for Genesis play back.

Sound CPU: Motorola 16-Bit 68000 at 11.47/12.5MHz, the later is for Sega CD play back.

Main Video: 6 background layers, 24-Bit color, 350,000 sprites/bare quadrangles, 200,000 textured quadrangles, no per line limit, 200,000 polygons per second, can do everything the Saturn can do otherwise.

Sound: Almost the same as the Saturn, but dose support audio decompression and better FM support with WSG, PSG & White Nose support, the chip is know as the YMF295, Genesis & Sega CD sound also come from this chip as well, 32 channels.

Ram:1MB (8 Megabits) SDRAM
512K (4 Megabits) video RAM
256Kx2 (2x2 Megabits) framebuffer RAM
1MB (8 Megabits) BC chip RAM/Extra RAM
512KB (4 Megabits) audio RAM
512KB (4 Megabits) CD-ROM cache
32KB nonvolatile RAM (battery backup)
1MB (8 Megabits) BIOS ROM

Backwards Compatibility: A chip with the Z80, Genesis VDP, Sega CD Scaling and SN76489 built in.

Jupiter was supposed to be the same thing as Saturn, just using cartridge media.

Saturn originally used a NEC V60, but they heard the Playstation specs and changed it to dual SH2s.

For the Gigadrive, we have NO known specs. It is RUMORED to be based on a more powerful Sega arcade machine from circa 1991. But I can tell you right away that with that form factor, it couldn't have had full Megadrive and Mega CD compatibility for sure.

As for the Saturn, that is true, Jupiter was going to use a 68030 at 33MHz.

Jupiter & Giga Drive were the same thing, Jupite was going to be the Giga Drive's US name was all when Pal markets & Japan called it the Giga Drive.

OK, that sounds plausible, but again, no source anywhere.

it is most likely some kind of mock up or design test - judging by the size alone, it would've been impossible for this to play Sega CD stuff in 1991 when the screenshots were found. The Megadrive consisted of 2 ASICs, a 68k, a z80, a ym2612 and many ram chips at the time, and you couldn't physically fit all of those in a case ~15cm in diameter - let alone the extra Sega CD stuff. The CDX did something similar but it was made in 1994 when they already reduced the Megadrive to 3-4 chips in total, and it still had to use two PCBs inside.

Not to mention that the specs here:
>>1986823
are bullshit for a 68030, it just cannot push that many polygons, and you cannot just include a secondary sound cpu used for sega cd... the sega cd just didn't work that way.
It also doesn't help that the YMF295 was an OPL4 that wasn't available until late 1994 originally (and the YMF295 itself was a revision of that, that came out MUCH later).

All of that plus the z80, genny vdp, Mega CD Scaler... a machine with such specs would, in 1994, cost WAY more than what the Saturn did, would be three times as complex, and quite possibly much weaker as well... not to mention 1991 when the first Gigadrive rumors, and that image, surfaced.

This interview will help.
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/12/03/emulating-megadrive-3ds-isnt-easy-enter-3d-sonic-hedgehog/

That was a prototype, most of Sega press models are just empty shells as was the case with the Sega Neptune.

The Sega YMF295 was a updated version of the YMF292, note the F on the end of the chip, this would of been called the YMF295-F chip to tell apart from the stander YMF295.

The Jupiter/Giga Drive did have it's own 32X adapter if that helped.

Also that interview talks about using the 68030 CPU and the extra video hardware to expand the layers of scrolling to expand the Genesis background layers from 2 to 8 (2 + 6, the Genesis does the sprite work and the first or first 2 background layer(s), the Jupiter does the rest).

the 68030 chip was use so that they can use native 68000 Genesis code and for the extra video hardware which needed the extra CPU power.

Just to round things off. The Zemmix MSX Neo. It's an MSX2+ implemented on what is (I believe) an Altera DE0 FPGA. It also has a built-in scanline generator, and supports the MIDI-PAC.

And of course the 1chipMSX from D4E, the guys behind MSX games on the Virtual Console. It also uses an Altera DE0 FPGA, and supports the MIDI-PAC. No scanline generator though. Like the Zemmix Neo it sports VGA out and S-Video out, and comes with two cart slots. Also out of production.

And then there is the non-hardware, the DE-series FPGAs themselves. If they supported joysticks and carts, they wouldn't be much different from the other two. Setting one up is typically just a case of buying a DE0 or DE1, putting Caro's implementation of the 1chipMSX on it, and then getting the right files for your FAT16 SD card (MSX-DOS and BIOS).

Currently there are people trying to tie all these things together by creating a daughter-board for the DE1. With any luck by next year you'll be able to buy a DE1, buy a daughter board and case, and end up with a brand-new MSX2+ with SD card and VGA support. Likely for a lot less than importing a hitbit.

Sure. If you could live on SD-card loading only, you could probably make one quite quickly. As with most projects, the casing would be the hard part because you can't just get one off the shelf.

M2 said that they had to dig up "lost hardware" to get said extra video layers for said games.

It also uses a 68030 so that it can power that extra video hardware as well, Sega might still be making consoles if they lowered down their specs to have Genesis BC instead of having powerful hardware that is hard to work with so that they killed it off early and replaced it with the Dreamcast.

Looking at the thing from the outside, it reminds me of the inner workings of a MegaSqurt ECU. Semi off-topic, but they always seemed to love using those blue motherboards.
