When was the last time you played it? I started playing last year. Let me tell you something, the vaults are very exciting death traps and filled with lots of good gear. Even if you have a resistance hole you can easily find swapable gear. Swapping armour takes only one turn and the out of LOS bullshit deaths are a thing of the past. You're also not supposed to explore EVERYTHING. Most people dive to DL80 or something once they have good HP and Speed and important resistances. Hell, there are people capable of beating this with locked stairs. Give it a try, you probably won't be disappointing.

I agree with your points in Nethack, that's why I mainly play Unnethack. The restrictions to wishes was very clever.
