Any other Railroad Tycoon fans here?

>> No.1958458

Yes.

>> No.1958756

Couldn't really get into it. Probably because I'm not that much of a train geek, and the existence of Transport Tycoon. To me, RRT2 is less about building railroads than winning scenarios.

It's more railroad Corporate CEO simulator. Buying all steps of production to supplement your railway was great.

>> No.1959465

>>1958854

It's on TPB right now. Even if you buy a CD copy, the devs or even the publisher/rights owner aren't seeing any of that money anymore, so I don't have any ethical qualms with that.

I would totally buy it on GOG, though.

It sucks that PopTop software is dead. Sid Mayer's Railroads was a comete disappointment after RT3.

See I loved Railroads the best almost. It played like a fast past board game and felt like a board game too. I loved the competetiveness of it and I do just love how crazy and how you had to keep on your toes.

While it wasn't RCT4 I still think Railroads is a gem that everyone should play.

Also I liked 3 the best. What was everyone else favorite? I never played the computer version of 2 but I did own RCT2 on Dreamcast.

I only want it on GoG 'cause I can't get it to run on Win 7.

Plus I'd like all the nice little extras.

RRT3 was a big part of my childhood. I've been trying to get into 2 but it's just not the same. I also snagged Railroads but it refuses to even install.

>>1960585

Odd. I torrented an .ISO of the Gold Edition and it works just fine on 7, though I did have to snag the 1.56 Platinum patch to fix the fast scrolling issue.

The extras /would/ be rather nice, but I presume the main features would be the soundtrack and the manual, but you already have the former. The music files are stored as MP3s under data2 in the game folder, not even in an archive or anything.

As a side note, RRT3 does the same thing, and you can drag & drop the RRT2 music into the RRT3 music folder to get all of those songs in the game without even modifying any config files or anything, but dumping the RRT3 tracks into 2's folder causes a crash for some reason.

Not really. Isn't TTD more complex than RT?
I personally have played OpenTTD, but I'm still learning how to do everything.

>> No.1961182

>>1961114
OTTD is so much fun. I currently have some 300 trains, 450 streetcars and 90 ships active on a fairly small map (128x256) with ~350 stops. It's really hard to keep everything running, so naturally I try to overload the system, then get to fixing it again by replacing signals or rerouting trains or trams.

...I just realized I'm almost 30 and I'll die alone.

>> No.1961575

>>1961114

OpenTTD is more complex, but RRT is more of a niche thing. To my knowledge, the business mechanics are more in-depth than OpenTTD based on what I've played of OpenTTD, but ultimately the game is more for train fans than... well, TTD fans. No trucks, no planes, no ships. Just trains.

That said, if you enjoy OpenTTD, you ought to give 2 or 3 a shot. They're entertaining and very comfy to play.

OTTD is complex because it's much more focused and in depth on rail lines.

RRT has a much larger focus and a bit more in depth economy and goods still move around the map even if you don't have a line connected to them.

>> No.1962772

>and goods still move around the map even if you don't have a line connected to them.

RRT3 is like that. In RRT2 goods don't move without your intervention.

Oh. When I played 2 I was kinda young so I had no idea what I was doing.

So here's another really dumb question then about RRT; am I supposed to build lines to just the towns or to the factories and shit too?

I mean I've always played 3 so I never really understood if I was or not but since everything kinda moved on it's own I was never sure. Specially since all the stations have a radius around it it confused the shit out of me when it came to towns

>> No.1965530

i like RRT2 a lot. i tried getting into RRT3 but i just couldn't. i like that you were in control of the movement of goods. also i guess i didn't have the patience to learn the new system in RRT3. my mom bought me RRT2. it came in a pack of 4 games. one was need for speed or something, one was some titanic point and click game, and the other was some game show game. RRT2 was the only one i played. i bought it off steam a while ago. the stock market aspect is pretty neat if you can figure it out. it still confuses me sometimes but i remember taking over rival companies by playing the system.

RRT2 is one of my most played steam games. i swear im not autistic

Towns have centralized industries and houses for passengers, but you can place a station anywhere. If there is some industry far off that you just HAVE to have, you can plunk a station there and move just those goods from there to wherever they need to go, but that station will ONLY have that good/material and it will have NO demands.

>>1965530

3's system is actually pretty straightforward. Basically, stuff can move on its own if it's either close enough to its destination or on a river that goes to its destination.

This can make it easier on you to transport finished goods, like if a town with a lumber mill is surrounded by logging camps. The logs make their own way to the town, so you can just transport the finished lumber instead of transporting the logs and then the lumber.

Even if there's no handy industry for the materials, they will still be shipped to the nearest town. It's a bit slower that way, but that means your stations don't need to cover everything to be able to ship those goods, which allows farms and whatnot to be easier to transport goods from since your station no longer /needs/ to cover them in its area of influence.

The overview mode shows you all of this. Go to cargo mode and select a cargo. It shows you where prices are high and low for any given available good, in addition to all of its production facilities and/or production centers. It will also show you at a glance how many loads of any good are in any given location, plus the paths they take to wherever they move to, if anywhere.

Also, the stock market is as deep as in 2 as far as I'm aware. You can still do stocks and bonds and take over companies or acquire the assets of liquidated companies. It's VERY fun to buy a lot of stock in a rival and, as soon as they hit a spot of trouble, sell all of your stock in them and watch as they struggle to cope with the loss.

>RRT2 is one of my most played steam games. i swear im not autistic

To be fair, the only way to play RRT is to sink a lot of time into it. Autism or not, you /have / to play a long while to get anywhere.

Forgive my pleb-tier knowledge of stock market mechanics, but why would that affect anything? Sure, their stock price blows, but surely with all their assets, liquid and material in play, they can carry on as they did before? I'm sure the other stockholders'll be pissed, but what changes in practise?

When their stocks price drops, that means they're already doing badly overall.

It won't take money from the company directly, but it can get the chairman fired for doing a piss poor job. If nobody else buys out or takes over the company, then the company will go under and liquidate its assets because nobody is running the show.

In addition, when the stock price drops, then issuing stock will not help them much and just sink them further down. If they issue stock at $10 a share and drop it to $8 a share, not only are they not getting hardly any money, but they're pissing off stockholders, too. Beyond that, I think it drops credit rating, too, so they can't issue a bond due to having shitty credit, but the AI usually does that beforehand and can be the cause of them hitting hard times in the first place. So, the company hits hard times and gets locked in a situation where it can be impossible to pull the company out of its sinkhole.

So, without extra money and no way to get any, if their trains aren't keeping them afloat, they will go into debt. Company debt is extremely bad. IIRC, you earn interest on money at like 3% a year. That's for what you /have/. If your money goes into the red, you actually are paying interest on your debt at around 28% a year, so if you (or they) can't pull yourself out of the hole then you're pretty well fucked.

>> No.1966989

Is it just me or is the AI in 3 hilariously inept and terrible versus in 2?

I played the shit out of it. Always loved playing on maps according to earth, like UK and so on.
I remember that my dream map would span all the world with a big enough map size difference that enemy companies would do their shit in Asia, Souther America etc long before i could financially get there.
