What's the best way to play FFVII these days? Is PSX still the best version?

Anyway, the best way to play it is probably on PC using the Bootlegger mod. Can at least increase the resolution of the backgrounds. There's a massive assortment of other mods to customize and choose from if you so wish as well. I personally like getting rid of the lego characters and having everyone look a little more normal, of course without going overboard on the detail. Just something more akin to the FF8 models.

PC. Better reading text, a patch that retranslates the whole game based off the japanese source text, mods to have music that matches (or exceeds) the psx version, 1080p resolution and optional updated character models that do not clash with the game style (battle model for character are all bumbed to a level of detail slightly higher than the one used for the cloud model in the last battle)

If you can get the 1998 release of the pc game, is going to be substantially easier to install those mods. If you get the steam release, you'll have to work more.

Not the guy you responded to, but they're definitely there. Summons suffer from slowdown where there isn't any running on a PS1 or PS2, like Kjata and Knights of the Round. Audio can get fucked up at times, too, like the "whirl" sound before a battle starts sounds completely distorted.

>> No.1971783

Nah, i played it on my PS3 for the first time off the original hardware and i noticed a lot of changes.
>Finger-pointer glitches out (black box around it) and flickers while selecting enemies to attack
>Cloud's attack sounds are much squelchier, and battle transition sounds sound like they're being played through an anus
>Summons sometimes bomb the framerate and almost freeze the game occasionally
>Menus flicker while summoning Ifrit
Etc.
But it's still very playable.

People blinded by "my first RPG was FF7" and "my first game was fucking Mario 64" has ruined gaming by having expectations for games lowered and debased to hell and back, and it's sad.
