I just finished this game in one sitting without a single game over.

I found it incredibly easy until the final temple/palace, surely this game doesn't deserve its reputation for being so difficult, and the fact that you can just ignore health and magic upgrades and opt for increasing your attack is what made the game incredibly easy for me.

>> No.1952382

I do not have a problem plowing through this game either. I believe it was the difference in game mechanics that made it hard for some people. Zelda 2 took a different kind of skill to beat that Zelda players weren't expecting.

Was this your first time playing?

Things like New Kasuto, needing the Thunder spell before going to the final palace, the hidden magic jar in the maze, needing the Reflect spell before doing the island palace, etc.

I wonder why so many people dislike this game. I thought it was really good and would love to see Nintendo pick its premise up again. Maybe for a handheld Zelda.

I fucking loved the overworld with monster assaults and the platformer gameplay.

Other games have demonstrated that platforming, adventures and puzzles can work really well together.

It's not flawless though. My biggest gripe is the bad (visual) design of places and dungeons.

For example how they wasted loads of space by having just huge rooms filled with nothing. Both in dungeons and towns.

That's all space that can be used.

Since it's a shoddy translation, there's a few things people think it could mean.

1. Hint at the dungeon boss location ( least likely since there is no peninsula in the dungeon )

2. The far north east side of the overworld map has a secret wall that you can climb directly above the money making game ( the reward is 100 rupees )

3. It's the heart piece you reach via raft/step ladder.

In any case, the actual Japanese quote is completely different. In Japan it's telling the player that using arrows costs rupees.

>> No.1962978

I think the thing people really dislike about it is primarily the difficulty. Most Zelda fans of course didn't play it when it came out and only went back later on, but unlike TLoZ it's not really similar to any of the later games, so it's much more difficult to appreciate if you're a FUCKING casual.

Zelda II also is more difficult than most NES games in the beginning only, in that until you've spent some time grinding you're gonna get your ass kicked unless you know what you're doing.

The game really asks you to try to git gud, whereas TLoZ the combat is simplistic and unchallenging and the puzzles are what provides the challenge and if you're a retard you can just use a guide.

It's a shame because Zelda II is easily my favorite game in the series and is responsible for a lot of shit in the later series, yet among modern Zelda fans it's almost universally considered the worst in the series because nobody wants to put the effort in to see the great parts.

>until you've spent some time grinding
I've actually found that this is one of those games that least requires ANY grinding. There's only so much levelling up possible that by the time you reach the last palace you are pretty much, or nearly, at the maximum for everything anyway; and the game features a steady increase in challenge so that you are at the appropriate level you need to be to beat the current part pretty much all the way through. Even if you don't "you know what you're doing", I still find retrying a few times a lot less tedious than grinding.

When I was playing this game for the second time I found out that doing death mountain twice was everything I was looking for in terms of grinding. as soon as i finish it I went all the way back and then I did it again. All monsters respaw and when your finish it a second time you are strong as fuck.

There aren't any actual puzzles in TLoZ. The "puzzles" never get more complicated than "kill all the enemies and push this one block." TLoZ's combat may be simplistic, but it's effective and the real tests of the game are surviving and figuring out what to do and where to go on your own.

Does cheating really fuck up Zelda II that badly?

I remember cheating in the gamecube version of Zelda II pretty frequenty. Once I went to play without cheating and for no reason at all, there were holes, everywhere. When I fell into them, there was the usual falling animation, and Link would usually end up in the ceiling of the room he fell from, or in a completely random location in the game.

This didn't happen just one time either.
