Also exploring stuff can be fun, to find hidden little stashes of ammo or health in some corner, or secret compartments.

Also, while you don't have to go all Gothic99 or anything, do put -some- effort into detail, all plain rooms with no depth or interesting things going for them can get quite boring.

Also, PLEASE replace the stock .midis, even if they're just .midis from another iwad/the same iwad in another order, music can do great things for atmosphere, nothing kills my enthusiasm as much as booting up a map(set), and hearing D_RUNNIN for the millionth time. Also consider replacing the stock sky textures, that can entirely change the look and feel of a map.

Maps are easier, they don't involve nearly as much actual coding.
You can dip into the ACS for fun stuff, but most of mapping is putting together the actual geometry and figuring out how to get a player to look in the direction you want him to.

Modding has some resources out there, but you're probably gonna want to start by opening up something else. I suggest Brutal Doom Sperglord Edition--because, unlike its parent mod, it has much cleaner code, while still being something you'll easily recognize and having plenty of different basic effects that you'll probably wanna learn.

Everyone makes this complaint, but the only trouble I ever had was finding an item in the lava cave around mid-game and deducing what the chains by the stairs do in one of the levels in the first hub. Everything else made intuitive sense to me or was at least pretty easy to figure out almost immediately. If you haven't beaten it already, try giving it another chance and just remember to check every corner, even if it seems like there's no reason for something to be there. Hexen's a game of exploration more than anything else.

As for Hexen, that'd be a little tricky. The objective is basically going to be "find the next switch, deduce what it opens, repeat". Occasionally you'll have to do some item hunting as well, but that's usually pretty obvious ("hmm, this looks suspiciously like a mask-shaped hole in the wall and pressing <use> tells me I'm right", to name an early example you've probably seen already) and it's a safe bet that the item you want is probably in another area. I guess your proposed patch could basically have "find $item || $switch in $location", but really you can pretty much figure that much out for yourself. The problem is just finding everything, which would make anything else a more of a spoiler than a guide. However, that'd be really helpful for people that end up taking a long break from the game, if nothing else, so maybe you're on to something there.

I disagree, in part. Elements of Petersen's maps can meld very well with a Romero map, it just takes work and a good eye. What you want in any good Hellbase map is Petersen's (and Tom Hall's) sense of architectural weirdness and mindbending weird rooms but Romero's sense of cool texture usage and realistic-yet-abstract room design. Brutal Doom is what Doom would have been like if it had been released recently. It adds some features from more modern FPS games(sights, reloads, locational damage etc)and ports them over to doom. It also adds lots of gore and makes the enemies more dangerous to you while also making you more dangerous to them.

It basically dials the run&gun gameplay of standard doom up to 11.

If that sounds appealing to you then give it a try.

Brutal Doom has it's good and its bad.

Sgt. Mark managed to wrestle all this shit to work with Zandronum. There's lots of neat shit that the mod actually wrestled in to make work with the code. 3D Models, Simulated dynamic lights in software, it's all technically impressive that it works.

The mod is pulse-pounding and fun and fast. It definitely is a blast to play for the first few minutes.

Balance is out the fucking window. What Sgt. Mark claims is a "rebalancing" causes projectile-based monsters to throw deflated party balloons at you, while gun-toting monsters wreck your shit faster than you can say "I'M A MAN AND A HALF!"

Speaking of things you can say, the sounds are taken up to eleven in a bad way. Almost every single sound you hear tends to get on your nerves after the five thousandth time you hear it. Hearing "Auuohah!" via pain feedback from monsters is neat. Hearing it every single time you kill something and it decides to moan on the ground for a while becomes painful to hear. Not to mention many things (like the quotes from the comic and pretty much all of the guns) are loud as HELL. You can even hear the clipping in a few of them.

Furthermore, if you were hoping for something that melds well with the classic Doom game, you're out of luck. Reloading causes the flow to be periodically stagnated, as the constant sudden switching between "I'M A MAN AND A HALF" and "Hold on I have 2 bullets in my clip" can take you out of the game long enough to realize the flaws. Guns absolutely require freelook (looking up and down with the mouse), and feature an ADS system which further slows down the just-point-and-shoot nature of Doom.

So, basically, it's fun in short bursts.

Bullshit, Imps are the only enemy you can sort of claim this for, all the other enemies that fire visible projectiles are just as dangerous as they were before if not moreso. The stuff about gun enemies being much more dangerous is absolutely true though.

The ADS system is only present the Assault Rifle and the pump Shotgun, none of the other weapons use it and even the aforementioned Rifle and Shotgun do not require the use of said sights to function at all. The only time the sights are really necessary is at long range.

It's not really bad, but there are elements of it that people dislike, like bullet holes or fatalities becoming annoying or whatever. It's a popular mod which makes it an even easier target as well, especially when people credit it as 'the way doom should have been' or 'the only way to play doom'.

Well, first off it's infamous and famous as one of the worst WADs, one of the best WADs, one of the dumbest WADs, one of the most genius WADs, and one of the funniest WADs. It's one of the earlier DOOM WADs and is one of the largest. It had a DHE patch that was off the wall and changed the game to a large degree in several interesting ways.

I don't guess it changed the world or anything, but it's definitely one of those WADs that every DOOMer should play for better or for worse.
