I concentrate on learning anatomy pretty much exclusively. To the detriment of everything else pretty much, but I really want to specialise in it. Ask me to draw a car and I'm lost, but a person in most poses, including pretty accurate muscle interaction, and I'm there.

But in my teens, I wanted to just copy everything from the anime I was watching, which set me back several years in terms of the way I was developing. If you want to draw that style, it's fine. If you don't, then it'll take a while to un-learn the bad habits you picked up from the anime stuff.

I can respect that. It's one of my favorite subjects. I sometimes browse /ic/ in hopes of bumping into anatomy/critique threads but I don't run into many. I'm not an actual artist, so I doubt I could offer anything of value anyway.

So, how do you study? I started with bones and the major joints of the body. The basics of bones are pretty easy; most of the features are related to joints and muscles and one can't do anything about that in the beginning. Studying the muscles is quite fun, even though it is overwhelming at first.

I also maintain a small collection of bad anatomy pictures. They always get a laugh out of me but I can't post most of them here.

I just use books, mostly. Books and a lot of practice. Watching old Japanese wrestling on YouTube and pausing at the right moment is great. Not new stuff, I don't like the artificial muscle look. But it's a great way to get unusual poses and muscle interaction, etc. The sad thing is most people don't notice whether someone is good at anatomy or not. Or they don't care. Either way.
