So, I'm not a coder by a long shot, but I just had this idea: since map/gameplay-mod combos will often break scripts over their knees due to same-number scripts, and newer versions of (g)zDoom will accept named scripts, how possible would it be to write a program that renames all numbered scripts in a WAD from [NUMBER] to [WADNAME][NUMBER]?

DX isn't really about levels much. Sure, you level your skills, but that's a roundabout way of the usual way it's done with smaller incremements. The main "system" is the way that EXP is earned and just spent instead of the traditional RPG level-up system.

I'm working on a wad with custom monsters, but I don't want general reskins, I want monsters that changes the gameplay and how to set new level designs around them. Some I can't reveal, but I wondered what you guys thought about this concept for one them:

Name: Dark Altar
Visual: Similar to a Hellish Lamp, Just darker and more pointy. Colour Purple.
Health: 50
Movement: n/a
Melee: n/a
Range: n/a
Special:
Upon alert summons up to 10 "Life Soul" over a course of a minute. The amount/duration resets if the Dark Altar sees a player witin range.

Name: Life Soul
Visual: Lost Soul with Blue Fire
Health: 1
Movement: Lost Soul
Melee:
(acts as short-range attack, see below)
Range:
(melee special) fires up to 5 blue flame balls in a form of a flamethrower dealing 1 D3 damage each, pierces armor.
Special: Revives dead monsters upon collision, but the Life Soul dies in the process.

So The idea is Dark Altars get alerted by normal or "trap" means, they summon a limited amount of Life Souls to surround DOOMGUY, or flood the map, and make allowed-corpses revivable on any height.

Idea any good? Still work in progress

I have 8 monsters planned, 1 being a boss and a true final boss (life souls dont count, since they cant be placed, only created by Dark Altars) The wad is a unofficial expansion to DOOM2, since I crave new content without being reskins and boring shit.

Not all are unique ideas, some you see in wads all the time. These were designed to fit the gameplay. My favourite I can't reveal due to being a concept to my knowledge that hasn't been done, and I want to keep it hidden. However it was possible thanks to another custom monster in a very known wad that made the effect possible, but its not the same skill, just similar coding.

One is a Black Knight of Hell, essentially 500+ more health than a Baron of Hell, and stronger melee/missile attacks (faster missile too), simple stuff but fits the gaps between baron and cyberdemon well.

The Boss while I won't reveal the name of description, is essentially a floating monster that acts like an Icon of Sin, spawning monsters around.

There's only one custom monster I found online (and only one) that I loved the addition to the game, I decided to shamelessly rip-it to my game under a new design. It's the cyborg-baron of hell that fires rockets. Not exactly original character do not steal, but a weaker monster that fires only 1 Cyberdemon rocket is a great punishing force in the monster collection. This new really agitated monster would really shake up more rocket spam.

Bear with me, it's a bit of an odd one (basically went with the "this shit might be good so I'll throw it in" approach)

280g carrots
210g Bananas
125g Red ripe Jalapenos
125g Green Jalapenos
120g Apples
110g Bhut Jolokias (this is the hot part)
80g prunes
60 cl Balsamic Vinegar
25cl standard blonde Lager Beer

Mix all the solid ingredients with a food processor or blender, then shove into your cooking apparatus of choice. Add Vinegar and Beer and slowly bring it to a boil while stirring.

It's hotter than I had anticipated, and has a surprisingly appley taste.

A bunch of sprites in the sprite folder of a mod I'm making suddenly turned into markers in slade, not sprites, like markers you use to organize sections in slade.

I think something must of goofed up because I opened multiple versions of slade....I was just trying to fix a weapons offsets to another weapons and now this bullshit happened.

Anyone know how to fix this? this is a shit load of work down the drain, I tried loading a back-up and the same shit was there

The sprites are not missing but they got rearranged in different folders. The corrupter files ate up the names and rearranged things where I'd have to put them back, erase the markers, and then rename fucking everything because they all possess the wrong name.

For example, if I were using a normal vanilla cacodemon, HEADA1 is now HEADA4A6. It continues on like that until the missing sprites. So I'd have to find the folder there in, put them back, then rename everything.

I don't know if this is actually worth it, but I spent like 4 months on this mod, did edits on monsters and weapons, made brightmaps. I have an older version but it is seriously outdated....

I can upload it if anyone think they can work a miracle. its heavily WIP and nothing is credited, I was going to do that around the finishing point. All of the decorate and gl defs are fine......just everything in folders.

Like, the weapon sprites are fine, monsters are completely borked, you'll see random markers and when you look at the sprites they all have the wrong sprite names, which means corresponding brightmaps no longer work (but there borked too so...). Sounds are completely wrong, like bloodsplats are now gun shot sounds. The chainsaw wallcutting decal is now a cyberdemon explosion brightmap

I like vanilla mapping more than I do UDMF or Doom In Hexen, mostly because as soon as you move over to one of those, your options for something as simple as opening a door expand exponentially. Yes, there's that added degree of control, but then there's also remembering the default raising speed for a door, or how to do this or that, etc.

I prefer mapping in vanilla because it makes me more apt to figure out interesting ways to use the existing specials and try out new ways of doing stuff with them that I otherwise wouldn't have used.

Also, I love custom enemies but there's only a handful of them that actually look good, and trying to balance the game around them in the existing bestiary can be a pain in the fucking ass. However, if you ARE sick of the default enemies, there's a simple solution: Make your own randomizer. It takes very little effort, and you can easily replace enemies with whatever you want and fuck with the balance. I myself have a personal mod that switches out Imps for Soul Harvesters, pinkies for Blood Demons and adds Vores, Hell Warriors and Satyrs.

You'll probably have lots of leftover shit though as a banana generally weighs 80 to 120g for exemple.

Okay guys, this is it, the first official "beta" of my megawad, Bad Blood. Right now there are 9 of the 11 planned levels for the first episode finished; the other two are vague concepts and pieces right now but are coming together smoothly. It includes some new music (some of which is placeholder, some of which is newly composed/made into MIDIs), a new sky, a new HUD and a placeholder titlepic & title graphic.

Feedback is greatly appreciated. The levels are vanilla Doom 2 so feel free to play it with whatever ports or gameplay mods you desire, although I have no idea how it will work with something drastic like BD, GMOTA or Daemonsteal. Please report bugs, places where you get stuck, parts that are shitty, etc. Especially any rooms that you feel look underdetailed or feel pointless. The final release will have proper credits (for the music, textures and graphics I plan to implement) but this doesn't since it's an unfinished thing.

Okay how am I supposed to get the super in level 2 without dying? I went in the tunnel and died. The second time I found the soul sphere and made it through the tunnel but I still couldn't find a radiation suit. It's not that it's too difficult, it's just that you are much likely to see the tunnel entrance before you find the hidden suit and of course players will go explore and expect to find either a suit or normal floor further along inside.

A very simple solution to this BLATANT DESIGN FLAW would be to close the tunnel entrance and only have it open up AFTER and IF the player finds the suit. But of course if you want to be smug about it you don't have to do that and can just go fuck yourself, faggot.

But since you're admittedly a newfag, I'll tell you exactly why, and only because it's early enough that I can tell you genuinely want this and aren't just shitposting.

Brutal Doom is what we in the community call a "gameplay mod." It changes the gameplay, and by that I mean, it changes EVERYTHING. It might not seem like it because to a newcomer, BD just looks like it adds a bunch of blood, new weapons and shit, but it changes everything--the way the monsters react, the weapons, how lots of complicated shit with the screen is, and other bullshit.

Because of the way ZDoom's complicated scripting languages (ACS and DECORATE) work, it is VERY difficult to make ANY "gameplay" mod work with any other "gameplay" mod, weapon mod, enemy mod, etc. You can't for example, run Brutal Doom with Project MSX, or with Samsara, or with Accessories to Murder, or Demonsteele, or GMOTA. Not without severely breaking one, or both, of them.

Mark is working on (or has already released) a version of Brutal Doom that is more compatible with some weapon or gameplay mods (but not all of them, I think) called BD Lite, so if you absolutely cannot live without your BD fix, that might be something you're into.

However, there are other mods that could do cool stuff that is similar BD. A lot of BD's built in "effects" are things that a lot of mods do, or do differently, and don't necessarily "come" with BD. It's a common newfag misconception to think BD added mouselook, or all the blood, and no other mods can do that, but mouselook is just part of ZDoom, and the blood is...well, it's one of the most common mods people do, there's lots of options; Ketchup, Droplets, Smooth Doom even has some blood shit. Pick one, figure out what works with it, and have fun.

My thinking, as a map designer, was to make it so that the player would obviously see the tunnel, right, and figure they could probably make it through. If they die, though, they figure they need to find a radsuit nearby, which is coincidentally in the same area as the very obvious chainsaw that the player will see early in the map, so they should already be looking for that secret.

As a mapper, I like to hide secrets in the "spaces" inbetween rooms. If there's two rooms that are next to each other on the map, I'll usually put a secret there to fill the space, so if you're having problems finding a secret, look at the automap and look for "holes."

If I get more feedback resembling yours though, I'll consider changing it so the tunnel opens only when you find the radsuit (and make it more obvious) or adding a second radsuit where the SSG is.

But from what I can tell, this is using Doomnukem's outdated Brutal Doom weapons pack. DN got all pissed off for one reason or another and decided to make his weapon pack standalone from BD, and started working with WildWeasel (who is for better or for worse basically the king of weapon mods, the dude has done more than you or I could ever play in our lifetimes) to make Accessories To Murder.

I'll tell you right now: Every big ZDoom project has a thread on the ZDoom forums. If anyone is ever talking about it, just go on there (forum.zdoom.org) and search for the title of the mod, and sooner or later the thread will pop up. Failing that, searching for the title and Doom in Google will usually wield positive results.

The big gameplay mods everyone is usually talking about lately are Demonsteele (in beta, not really finished), GMOTA (always being worked on but perfectly playable), AtM, and Project MSX.

Wads are everything. If it's levels, it's a wad. If it's just graphics or sounds, it's a wad. If it's weapons, or code, or a little bit of everything, it's a wad. Wad just means "file that Doom recognizes and can use."

The skins folder is only supposed to be used for exactly what it says for--skins. It is supposed to be used primarily for multiplayer, where you can change the way the player looks--the player's "skin"--so you can be identified by other players. It also works as a cheap way to autoload any wad file; I myself have a quick destructible objects wad, Perkistan's HQ sounds, and a simple pallete changing wad in my skins folder. But you DON'T want to put something major and game-changing as AtM, or Brutal Doom, or GMOTA, into your skins folder, unless you want ZDoom to load that shit literally every time you run it, which you don't.

If you want to play multiple wads that you know aren't going to conflict with each other (let's say you want to play GMOTA, a gameplay mod, with Scythe, a level set/"megawad") you just select both of them and drag and drop it over ZDoom. Or you can use ZDL. This is assuming you're in Windows; I have no idea how you do that shit with Linux or Mac.

This doesn't at all answer your original bitching about not using 3D floors. Yes, BTSX has vanilla enemies, but its environments are plenty cool and look great without messing with 3D floors, slopes, or anything of the sort.

The reason a lot of mappers don't use custom enemies is because custom enemies (or weapons, etc.) are NOT cross-compatible across different ports. If you make a vanilla (or limit-removing or boom-compatible) mapset, then ANYONE playing Doom can now play that map, whether they're playing it in DOSBox, Chocolate Doom, Doom95, Boom, ZDoom, ZDaemon, Zandronum, or even shitty phone ports. I can play BTSX right now on my phone. That's awesome.

But immediately if you use Doom in Hexen or UDMF, or add even one line of DECORATE, you are tying the mapset to ZDoom and its derivatives, of which there is...GZDoom and Zandronum. And you know, that's fine if that's what you want to do. For a lot of complex mods (GMOTA, Glockenschpiel) it's the ONLY way you can do some of this shit. And that's great. But not everyone needs to do shit that complex; not everyone is as bored of the limitations as you are.

For me, Doom mapping is just as much an exercise in personal growth as it is making an end product. I don't particularly care too much if my megawad gets super-popular or if a lot of people like it. I mostly care about making something that I like, and that I'm proud I made, inbetween the rest of my creative endeavours. So fuck you if you think I should be adding slopes and 3D floors everywhere, I don't.

There is a secret there that you didn't find, which can teleport you to a secret where you're SUPPOSED to have been able to sequence break past the blue key, but somewhere along the line the sequence got boned up and now you're right, even with the teleporter, a player without the blue key is screwed

You also missed a handful of secrets that I thought had pretty obvious solutions so maybe I need to rework them. Also I think you used the fist more in this run than I have in my entire time playing Doom--I tend to use berserk packs not as berserk packs per se but as guaranteed 100 life boxes (without going over). Seeing you grab them and then go through 2/3s of the level playing Mike Tyson's Punch-Out has made me think I might need to DEHACKED in a proper +100 medkit and add it in levels instead.

Actually, the big problem came because that guy started using those sprites in a "released" mod before his BD pack was considered done.

In the Doom community proper, it's considered good form to wait for someone to actually release a mod they're working on before you gank it for all it's worth. There's a reason many of Eriance's shit hasn't become so widespread, it's because he pretty much doesn't want people to fucking spread it everywhere and make Demon Eclipse shitty when (if) it's ever finished.

Hell, I suspect half the reason he redid all the weapon sprites again was because the originals ended up in fucking Skulltag (and everywhere else) to the point where he was probably sick of his own work being whored around before DE was "done." So it was like, why even play DE when you've already seen everything it has to offer in every other mod out there?
