I've been playing Toushin Toshi 2 lately, it's really fun and it doesnt have much grinding. It was made by Alice Soft so Rance fans might want to check it out, it has a translation patch for the PC version too.

Nocturnal Illusion and Divi Dead are still my favorites of all time.

If you want retro eroge you have to get familiar with the PC-98. That's what almost all of them were made for.
The 80s ones were still made for the PC-88 but most got ported to the PC-98 and often profited from the larger text resolution and higher disk capactiy.
The second important thing is to know Japanese. It's only absolutely required for adventures and some RPGs but it doesn't hurt for the rest.
The few games that got translated barely scratch the surface and don't represent the best examples, particularly not the titles that were commercially translated during the 90s.

I really liked the start of Divi-dead and then the plot went to shit in the second half. Also fuck walking around until something happens.

Not him but I kinda agree. It started out great and then went kinda meh. I still love the game though.
Checking out every single location to progress with plot is terrible gameplay placebo but I didn't mind. Atmosphere is great so wandering around campus was fine.
Shame about the translation though. It's so shitty it's almost surreal and kinda fits the atmosphere.

I've only started and messed around a little with TT2, but Toshin Toshi 1 is excellent too.

I'd especially recommend it to anyone who likes the first two Dragon Quest or first two Final Fantasy games, but thought the dungeons were too small.

Lots of stuff to explore, a whole bunch of secrets and optional areas, lots of monster girls to collect.

Also, unlike the Rance games, you don't have to rape anyone (although you can if you want to).

The MSX and X68k have quite large libraries of eroge; plenty of publishers like Alice Soft and Elf released versions of their games for multiple systems.

And then there are dojin games, most of which were only released for one platform... so to get a good sampling you'd have to get familiar with several machines.

How do you guys play divi-dead these days?
I managed to find an old ISO lying around on the internet which I believe is for Windows 95. Half the time the game just doesn't run for no reason, then I re-open the exe and it works fine. But then when I manage to get it to run, the speech audio is too low and the music too high, making it impossible to hear the dialogue.
Is there a modern release I don't know of?
And please don't say asenheim.org, it's so awkward playing there.

>learning japanese just to play eroge

That's pretty sad. Also people say that casually like learning japanese is something you can do easily by using that one or two lazy hours from your saturdays every weekend. japanese is HARD. as fuck.

MSX ports are automatically worse due to the shit resolution and x68k rarely offers any advantage. With the FM Towns you have at least a few games where you only have to deal with one CD instead of multiple floppies.
If there's another platform with interesting originals it's probably the X1.

Rape may be optional in TT2 but the game is still build around it. You're missing a lot if you play the good guy.

Asenheim. What's awkward about it? I replayed Divi-dead from start to finish a couple a months back through the site.

Nobody said that they learned Japanese just for eroge.
> japanese is HARD. as fuck.
Now you're just being defeatist. Even if you don't have the will to learn it doesn't mean that everypne else shouldn't learn it either.

That same ISO (well most likely the same) is working out fine for me on fairly modern machine with Win7 x64.

Sure the music is way too loud compared to speech but in no way it's a deal breaker. I can hear the dialogue fine. Try using speakers instead of headphones or vice versa. Or just dealt with it I dunno.

I got interested after seeing some screens with funny/interesting dialogue but damn the "click one hundred times over one single pixel if you want to proceed, not one time more or less or you'll be screwed forever" is really grating. the game is not intuitive at all, i get stuck every single screen because you need to check thing x y times to change thing z into another thing which you need to check x+3 times. also i can't understand the concept of jewel saves and travelling through time.

What do you not understand? You mark your place on the divergence map and can jump back to it. the map is a visualization of the different routes and the junctions show the times where you can change the course with a decision.
