Loved 1 hated 2.

2 felt clunky, graphics were okay but often what you needed to do was obscured in some way by them. Also that needless gigantic border.

You can divide the Metal Gear series into three (or four) parts:

1. Classic series. MG1, 2, MGS.
2. Patriots storyline. MGS2, MGS4
3. Big Boss storyline, MGS3, Peace Walker, MGSV

I like the classic series the most. The music, the more straight forward storylines. The Patriots stuff is where I think the series jumped the shark and got too silly.

They also have the best music. Very underappreciated. Catchy, chiptune style stuff. MGS has probably one of the best scores period.

A lot of the later games have some rather generic hollywood action music for much of it, which is pretty forgettable.

Yeah, everything after MGS2 feels like its part of a different series. It's inevitable that you're going to retcon stuff at some point when you have a series that has been around as long as Metal Gear has, but they changed way too much of the past from MGS3 and onward.

This guy.

I loved that score, this game had a memorable ost and gameplay. I'm not sure how to express this, everything in MG2 hit me hard, it felt like playing Zelda - A Link to the Past for the first time: the graphics, the freedom, the itens and their usage, the map and this is not nostalgia talking. I played this last year, right before MG1, which I thought it was quite nice, the rough concept of a stealth game, but it was MG2 that really got me.

I didn't expect all this when I decided to play the MSX2 metal gears before replaying MGS. I could tell right there how this series survived until now.

Bumping this thread as I need some quick advice here. I'm a poor fag, but really wanna get into MGS, or MG in general. I have a flashcart for my DSi and I thought it would be good to just start right from the beginning of the series with some comfy emulation. At least until I can afford a PSTRIPPLE with The Legacy Collection. So how do the MG games on MSX compare to the NES ports? And is the MSX emulator for DS solid? Should I play all of them or are any worth skipping? And is the GBC game as godlike as everyone says?

I have no experience with MSX2 emulation on the Nintendo DS, but if you're going that route, make sure you download the fan-translated versions, since Metal Gear 2 was Japanese only. Keep in mind that both Metal Gears on the MSX2 require you to use the F# keys to access item and weapon menus.

The NES Metal Gears are very different from the MSX2 versions. Technically, only the NES version of Metal Gear 1 is a port and it's very different from the original (and arguably not as good). Snake's Revenge was a separate sequel for the NES made without Kojima's involvement.

>And is the GBC game as godlike as everyone says?
It's not a flawless game, but it's pretty much the 2D Metal Gear formula in its peak, since every game afterward was in 3D.

Do you own PS2? You could just order MGS3: Subsistence, which has a second disc with both MSX2 games in it.

Metal Gear 2: the only game where you can be killed by a poisonous fucking hamster.

overall the first 2 metal gear games are great but they both rely on backtracking way too much.

Metal Gear 2 has some of the best overall level design in the series. The game mechanics are fairly simplistic (though complicated for the time), but the enemy placement and design complement it perfectly. Far better than in Metal Gear Solid, which is pathetically easy to sneak through thanks to the myopia of the guards. It's an excellent game. The puzzles are a bit obtuse, but the game's manual tells you everything you need. The rest you can get from Snake's radio contacts.

The game design and narrative are more of a sequel to 3 than 2. There's none of the postmodern structure of MGS2 to be found in 4.

And let's not forget that MGS4 made the Patriots Naked Snake's support crew. MGS4 is more of a sequel to MGS3 than it is MGS2, even if its goal was tying off 2's loose ends.

Honestly, MGS4's biggest narrative mistake was trying to wrap up every loose end from MGS1-3 in one game. MGS4 should've just been about Snake and Otacon chasing after Ocelot in the middle east with a new supporting cast. No Meryl, Raiden or Big Mama. But hey, at least Raiden got his own cool spinoff game thanks to MGS4.

The whole nanomachines thing in MGS4 gets blown away out of proportions (since nanomachines already existed back in MGS1). I'm referring more about stuff like Meryl hooking up with Akiba, the Patriots being Big Boss's support crew from MGS3, Eva turning out to be Solid and Liquid's surrogate mother and the whole undoing of MGS2's ambiguous nature by bringing back Raiden and Rose.

However, this was created by the Kobe development team and wasn’t what I would consider a ‘bad game.’ Actually, one of my juniors was working on the NES Snake’s Revenge and he said to me, ‘We’re making a sequel to Metal Gear, but what I really want is a true sequel made by you, Kojima-san.’ It’s because of that request that I ended up creating Metal Gear 2 on the MSX2. Something I loved about MGS4 which i havnt really seen anyone talk about: You know that scene where there on the boat about to approach arsenal gear. Theres a great scene where snake, octacon, meryl, the whole gang are walking towards the camera looking badass in slow mo. The music has been building up to this point. But when that part of the scene happens, the music hits this awesome melody which is a more "epic" version of the original music on the mgs1 menu screen. Look it up, the track played on mgs4 is called "At Dawn". MGS fanatics will know what im talking about.

Just a little part of that game that i loved. MGS4 gets alot of slack, there are a couple of dumb moments, and i couldve done without the whoe meryl johnny thing, a few cutscenes which were boring as hell... but on the whole, man... when that game came out. I was so hyped - and it certainly lived up to the hype for me. Especially the last boss fight. One of the best boss fights in history if you ask me. Kojima made me proud

Honestly, I don't get why the NES games have such a bad reputation. I know the NES Metal Gear isn't the ideal adaptation of the game and Kojima practically disowns it, but it's pretty evident that most of the changes were due to hardware differences between the MSX2 and the NES.

Snake's Revenge is fucking awesome for the soundtrack alone.

Really late to the game, but I beat Metal Gear Solid for PS1 a couple weeks ago. I loved it, but there were some really annoying parts, like the controls switching around when you hug a wall, causing me to accidentally turn the corner instead. Also, the final fist fight with Liquid Snake was hellish. I didn't like how your punches didn't always seem to connect, or how Liquid would become invulnerable for 3 seconds every time you hit him. Other than that, I loved it. Psycho Mantis and the Sniper Wolf battles were my favorites.
