Re: house wads, I think the first level in g-b-arch.wad (made in 1997) is great. Good use of midtextures for trees and crops too. Oh and the second level is also very nice. Definitely an underrated wad with its own unique atmosphere.

Been playing Doom since back in the day but never got heavily into playing WADs. Where's the best place to start? I'm mainly interested in the stuff that was doable in vanilla.

Doom Underground reviewed quite a lot of vanilla wads. They're marked as "standard Doom engine" in the index:

There's also others that need limit-removing port, or Boom, ZDoom, or whatever, and those are marked as such.

The ratings are on a scale of 0-5, but in themselves those aren't so useful, so click on some wad titles that sound interesting and read the reviews.

Also the ones I listed earlier are all for plain old vanilla Doom.

The first two are megawads (32 levels long) and the others are episodes.

Btw, if you want to play something that really feels like Knee Deep in the Dead from the first Doom game, check out Fava Beans (the very first one in their wad index). It's pretty amazing considering its age! It's fairly easy by today's standards, but if you never played PWADs before, it's a good intro/warmup.
