Not a very good game besides the graphics and music. Only really popular because Metroid is a girl.

It's only "hipster" if you only hold that opinion to be different and act knowledgable. I actually played the original Metroid to death when it first released and I remember the disappointment many series fans felt when Super Metroid came out, because it really was a big shift in the series. Now I'm not bashing Super. It's a fantastic game. But it's different enough in terms of design from the original (and II for that matter) that it's fair to prefer the original for legitimate reasons. You really can't say Super Metroid was just Metroid but improved because it did strip away some of the design decisions of the original. For some, the original level design is confusing and they don't appreciate the maze-like structure. Of course, that was kind of the point.

There is no objective answer here, other than you shouldn't be so quick to judge others just because they disagree with your choice for best game in the series.

It's a good candidate for the greatest and best game ever made but just like any other games it has some small flaws:
>The default control configuration is retarded
>You can't skip the intro
>You can't skip the item acquire fanfare
>The game is way too easy if you collect more than fifth of the power-ups, hell you don't even take damage after getting the screwattack/space jump combo
>You could argue that the fact you can sequence break it in so many ways shows it's poorly planned or broken piece of shit but personally I like it and the possibilities it offers

That said it should easily make it in any top 10 games ever made list.

Am I the only one who finds the physics way too floaty? Especially the jumping. It takes forever to land and air movement is extremely slow.

Honestly, in terms of the physics of all the 2D Metroid games, I found Fusion to be the best - the jumping is really snappy. You can also turn a neutral jump into a spinning jump by pressing the jump button a second time.
I mean, if we're talking strictly retro, though, then yeah, it's definitely Super Metroid.

I don't think it's the best game ever made. I love it, but many people debate if it is actually the best metroid game. I think that Super Metroid is the best Metroid game, and consolidated a genre that I enjoy a lot (and one of the greatest modding communities), I just don't think that it's the best game ever (it has a guaranteed spot on my top 10, though)

I personally enjoyed Fallout games a bit more, but I've got a long way on retro games yet (haven't tried planescape torment yet, for example).

I like a lot Super Metroid's physics, but maybe it made the game a bit slow. Nintendo later made Samus move faster on the Gameboy Advance games, so maybe they thought the same as you.

Something about his floatiness feels more satisfying than SM's floatiness, actually. Maybe because SMB2 has a lot of jumps that can end your life, making it more useful, or maybe because you almost never lose sight of the ground during a jump.

Just played SM for the third time and I still think it's just okay.

Opinions:

Pros-

Music is apt for the atmosphere, but not the best, I think lower brinstar is probably the best song in the game, followed by that creepy Maridia song.

Graphics are detailed but lacking.

Mechanics are fine, not the best but not bad.
Creature design was pretty cool. All the bosses looked great.

Cons-

Color scheme in Super Metroid is by far the most blandest shit. Not saying it isn't well done in terms of detail as described earlier, but man this room is all dark and blue, this one is all green with some red shit, this room is all red. In terms of interior design much is to be desired.

Shinesparking outside of moving upward is by far the most unintuitive shit.

Some people like the exploration aspect of Metroid, but I think SotN did it better. And how you may ask? Well SotN really made you feel as if you were free to go anywhere up to a reasonable point. I always felt SM insisted on being a bit too limiting.

But other than that, it's not a bad game, I'd give it a 7/10.

I don't think I would even say it's the de-facto best Metroid game, having played all of them. Prime gives it a real run for it's money in certain areas. Overall if I was forced to decide though, I would say Super is overall the strongest Metroid title.

It's the same with me.

Super Metroid was my first Metroid game, I had the cartridge and I played to fucking death. I literally can't stand playing it anymore. I played that goddamn game for like 3 years straight along with Mario World everyday because I had nothing else to play during weekdays, I only rented games on weekends. Super Metroid is printed on my brain - if I start playing it again I end up dropping around Brinstar because I'm really tired of it.

I only played Super and the Prime Trilogy, and my opinion remains: Super is the best thing ever.
Primes are really really really good, but the sheer perfection of Super is unbeatable. Every possible complain is nothing more than nitpicking.
